“I was watching a soap opera and all of a sudden an earthquake took place,” says Natcharin, a 13-year old girl who lives in Chiang Saen, northern Thailand. “My mum and I hid under the table and bed. If there is a disaster, people in our community will be in trouble."

Natcharin recently attended a 2-day workshop with 29 other children from 4 villages to create characters and stories to use for a shadow puppet show all about disasters.

“In our story, we want to talk about how it isn’t good to ignore flood warnings. I’ll use my knowledge to perform for adults and children so that they know how dangerous disasters can be”.

Rod puppet heads made from carved styrofoam balls covered in papermache. Hands were made from air dry clay. Head is supported by a dowel, and arm structure is a rope tied to the dowel, onto which the costume is built. Arms are manipulated by a wire hanger that was cut in half and straightened.-HS puppetry class

I wanted to practice frankensteining and this idea came into my head so I just randomly did it.

This week is the 5th anniversary of Iron Craft and we were tasked with making a project using materials that are given as 5th anniversary gifts. Wood is the tradition 5th anniversary gift so I went with that. Wooden Spoon puppets.

Front page of the Chapel Hill News on Sunday, October 19, 2008. Here is the original.

Hillsborough, NC ran its first annual Handmade Puppet Parade on October 11, 2008. Folks made giant puppets representing creatures from the local Eno River. I shot the parade for the Chapel Hill News.

The boy puppet armature was constructed by taking apart helping hands soldering tools and using them for the major joints in his legs, hips, and neck. The arms consist of wire covered with brass tube bones.

Five russian puppets. The little guy seems to be on to something that his older kins don't see.

The lightning comes from the back-left where there's a window, as well as from my flash which was on the left and bounced on the ceiling. There was also ambient light from far-away windows, of course.

I moved a fern into the background. I find that the reflection it gives on the glass table adds a little extra something.

I was able to get the effect I wanted with the depth of field, but I got some vignetting. I could have Photoshopped it out, but I found that it provided greater emphasis on the puppets and a more surreal setting. I think I'd have added a vignette anyways.

I adjusted the levels, added a tiny bit of contrast, and modified the colors a bit with hue/saturation. A bit of healing brush to take care of dust (though I'd just cleaned the table!) There's also the usual border.

This photo is also available on my Deviant art account.

Annual pilgrimage to the Sunapee Craft Fair today with sister Sue and friend Donna. So many beautiful and fun crafts to admire. I did manage to bring a few home from my favorite artisans.

Wow, I have more plush raccoons than I thought...

This is a Dakin hand puppet that my stepdad had lying around his house when my mom moved in with him...I sort of adopted him shortly afterward.

Mr. Puppet (aka Bob Abdou) was the very first performer of the Taylor Public Library 2010 Summer Reading Program, and was introduced by the Karen Ellis, the Library Director. Mr. Puppet thrilled the record-breaking crowd on June 2, 2010.

Mike, Eric, and I started a puppet webcomic. None of can draw, but we have great stories. So we decided to use our hands in a different way :)

I made her for a puppet show of little red riding hood. I don't remember any details - like why she isn't wearing any red.

Puppets Shadow

The puppet

Strings dangle down

as she moves around

her movements broken

as her head hangs down

Her master makes her sway

about through the play

but her spirit sit dully inside.

Her pain is unheard

as she owns not a mouth

but instead submits to the voice of another.

The shadow

he dances about

following her steps she puts out

mimicking each move that she makes.

he make not a sound

and his presence unknown,

even though the light makes him seen.

he has no choice, as to where or how he voices

the things that go on in his self.
