This pup was born just 30 minutes before we arrived at Donna Nook.
The grey seal (Halichoerus grypus, meaning "hooked-nosed sea pig")
In the United Kingdom and Ireland, the grey seal breeds in several colonies on and around the coasts. Notably large colonies are at Donna Nook (Lincolnshire)
The name is supposedly to be that of a ship called 'The Donna', part of the Spanish Armada, which sank off the Nook (a small headland) in 1588.
Seeing this nursing seal pup sparked a conversation about what makes a mammal. Homeschooling at its finest.
The succulent "Hiaworth" that I bought on Etsy has pups already! What am I supposed to do with those?
Here's mom walking the pup up the dune to the sleeping seals. Don't be fooled - this process took 10 minutes. I thought one picture sufficed, though.
I was trying to get a picture of them together but it really didn't work out so well. Anyone want to come be a dog handler? LOL!
