Today I saw the first pup! It spent most of its time on the back side of the rock, but after its mom went in it started bawling and humped its way over the top. After several false starts it finally made it into the water to join its mom.

Donna Nook on the Lincolnshire coast
Two pups from different mothers, (Cows only have one pup each year whilst fertile). Over a week old at this stage and quickly fattening up on mother's fat rich milk and now getting more adventurous.
Grey seal pups weigh about 14 kg at birth and have soft white fur. They remain on land where they suck from their mother for 18-21 days. A female’s milk contains up to 60% fat, so pups grow very quickly, gaining about 2 kg in weight each day. This weight gain consists mainly of a layer of blubber below their skin, which is vital insulation when they go to sea.
Pups stay on land until they have lost their white coats and trebled their body weight.
Grey seal pups are very vocal. Their cries sometimes sound like a human baby crying. This is normal behavior that helps mothers find their pups on crowded beaches . The cows do not feed while nursing pups.
This day's (24/11/2023) numbers, as reported by Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust ,
1607 pups, 1568 cows and 404 bulls
I kept well away and a long distance between the seals and pups. As not to disturb or stress them. The advantage of having a long reach lens :-)
Robo Pup...body - camp flashlight (complete with secret "stash" compartment), legs/feet - wooden shoe-trees, head - pivoting electric fan motor housing, ears - aluminum dental impression tray & tail - I think it was a finial off of an old lamp?...woof!
Today's prompt was to take a photo during the time of day where you think the light will be the most flattering. Decide whether to shoot AV or TV and choose the settings to emphasize what you like about this place.
I chose to take this photo in the living room in the middle of the afternoon. The light is soft and not creating any harsh lines or shadows.
I've learned that I prefer to shoot in AV mode because I like focusing more on the depth of field as opposed to the shutter speed. I'll let the camera do some of the work :)

A wild Common Seal pup at Donna Nook, Lincolnshire, 2009. This chap (or chapess!) gave me a couple of shots which had I returned with nothing else would have made my day. This is my favourite, I like the definition of its whiskers against the white puppy coat.

Just for Ken!
Another of the pups seen on my very enjoyable visit to see the seals on Thursday.
This and the white one uploaded yesterday are the extremes of the colouring of the pups seen. I intend uploading at least 2 other pups with colouring in between these 2 extremes.
Jackson & I on a pub (pup) crawl between Lasswade & Roslin. Started off at the Papermill then The Laird & Dog Inn before a treck along the Esk, through the woods and Roslin Glen to The Original Rosslyn Inn.
Went to see the seals gathered at Donna Nook in Lincolnshire. It's the time of year the pups are born. This one was close to the fence separating humans from seals.

For much of the year grey seals at the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trusts’ Donna Nook National Nature Reserve are at sea or hauled out on distant sandbanks. Every November and December, the seals give birth to their pups near the sand dunes. At the peak towards the end of November there are c 650 bulls, 1550 cows and 1750 pups.
