The rain was immense. Like many others, I waited in the library's vestibule for the torrent to lessen. And it did. I noticed two girls playing in the newly formed puddles across the street. They looked so happy.
I always wanted to do one of "those" puddle shots, so when I saw this reflection when out walking the dog I was really excited!
Tambopata is famous worldwide for its claylicks--the Colorado claylick, for example, found just a few minutes upriver from the Tambopata Research Center, where green parrots and flashy macaws flock in the hundreds to supplement their diets with badly needed salts. But parrots and macaws aren't the only animals in need of salt here in the western Amazon--the region is very far from aerosol sources coming in from the Atlantic ocean, and effectively cut off from the Pacific by the massive Andes mountains, meaning that salts are in short supply for virtually everyone. Mammals here also visit claylicks, and although occasionally they will visit the cliffs and riverbanks of the parrots, more often they acquire salts from open pits in the forest interior that are excavated over the years. Incredibly, even insects have to find salts here--the nectar they feed on as adults is low in just about everything but sugars. So this is why we see butterflies congregating in strange places--on riverbanks, at roadside puddles, on sweaty clothing, and even at urine--these are all sources of precious salt! In this photo, several species of pierid butterflies are feeding on the bank of the Tambopata River near the TRC. Every individual seen here is a male--in butterflies, the males are generally tasked with the acquisition of salt, which they transfer to the female during mating, along with the sperm, in what biologists call the spermatophore. Males spend a very large amount of time going after salt, just as parrots, macaws, and mammals do, during which time they are exposed and very vulnerable to predators--nevertheless, they're out there going after it, evidence of the importance of this mineral here in the Amazon.

I know that this is similar to one a few days ago, but how could I resist jumping in the million puddles in my driveway?

Not been taking too many photo's over the past week, so took a look back through some archive stuff of late.
Me and my puddle fascination... this was almost my shot for the 52 week with the 'reflection' theme.
This was a puddle that I saw during my walk through town this morning, Lincolnton, NC. Everyone have a great weekend, I'll be off flickr for a while, going on vacation!!!
It's a lot of fun to walk around and look at everyone's dolls. I enjoy seeing how people customize them. But it's also neat to see some of the rarer dolls or brand new ones in person.
Jimmy Dean and Link will jump over puddles or try to walk around big one. Frank just plods along like he did not even see them, he has been known to sit in puddles or even lie down - I think his double coat is the reason why.
A group of male Chequered Swallowtail butterflies, Papilio demoleus, mud puddling. They gather on damp ground, sucking in water to extract salts and minerals, believed to be essential for their reproductive systems.
