Burlap and opals. Moonshine and macrobiotics. Shaken and soothed. How Suzanne Santo (vocals/banjo/violin) and Ben Jaffe (vocals/guitar) managed to reconcile not just polemics, but seemingly opposed realities for their sexually tinged, bruised knee honeysuckle take on roots music has to be heard to be understood.

Yet somehow the young 20-somethings figured out that it’s the extremes that define the middle, whether embracing the big mistakes in the bluesy smoulder “Glad I Done What I Did,” embracing the romantic doubt that is the low slung gospel of “Don’t Know How,” or the euphoric romp-age of “Let’s Get Wrecked” that embraces the arc debauchery completely. This is the sound of coming not of age, but awareness; and digging into what it means to be alive permeates throughout honeyhoney’s October 24th release of Billy Jack on Lost Highway Records.

Found in an old family bible are a couple of pages from the John Lewis Childs Company's Fall Catalog of 1900. J. L. Childs founded the first mail order seed business in the United States.

The business he started boomed in Floral Park, NY until, in 1921, Childs died at the age of 65. His widow sold the business in the mid-1920s. During the Great Depression she sold off his large real estate holdings.

This postcard was published by J. Boyd Ellis of Arlington, Washington around 1955-1956. The photo was taken by Josef Scaylea, who served as The Seattle Times chief photographer for 35 years.

The back of the card contains a description of the front image: "SNOQUALMIE FALLS AND SNOQUALMIE VALLEY. This aerial view shows the falls and the valley through which the Sunset Highway passes over the Cascade mountains to Eastern Washington. To the left of the falls may be seen Snoqualmie Falls Lodge, one of the West's most famous eating places."

The Postcard

A carte postale that was published by Neurdein et Cie of 52, Avenue de Breteuil, Paris.

The card was posted in Trouville on Sunday the 7th. August 1921. It was sent to:

Miss Morrish,

c/o 108, Albert Street,

Canton,

Cardiff,

South Wales.

The message on the divided back of the card was as follows:

"Hope you had a good

journey and are enjoying

yourself.

We arrived safely and it

is a lovely place, and we

are having glorious weather.

I have marked out hotel on

this card.

Fountain pen just ran dry.

F. M. J."

The first part of the message was written in ink, and from the word 'hotel' it was written in pencil.

Sinn Féin

So what else happened on the day that the card was posted?

Well, on the 7th. August 1921, in accordance with an agreement between the United Kingdom and Irish Republicans, British prisons released all Sinn Féin members who had been elected to the Dail Eireann.

Manitas de Plata

The day also marked the birth of Ricardo Baliardo.

Ricardo Baliardo, better known by his stage name Manitas de Plata ("Little Hands of Silver"), was a Spanish flamenco guitarist of Catalan Gitano descent, born in southern France.

Despite achieving worldwide fame, he was criticized for not following certain rhythmic rules (compás) that are traditional in flamenco.

-- Manitas de Plata's Life and Career

Baliardo was born in a gypsy caravan in Sète, southern France.

Nicknamed Manitas de Plata, he agreed to play in public only ten years after the death of the Romani-Belgian jazz guitarist and composer Django Reinhardt, in 1953.

Baliardo attained fame in the United States after a photography exhibition in New York, organized by his friend Lucien Clergue.

Ricardo recorded his first album in the chapel of Arles in France in 1963, on the Philips label. It was later re-released in 1967 and sold through the Book of the Month Club.

This record brought him to the attention of an American audience, where a manager obtained a booking for him to play a concert at Carnegie Hall in New York on the 24th. November 1965, and on The Ed Sullivan Show the same year. Ricardo went on to perform in various venues around the world.

Manitas de Plata was the uncle of Diego, Paco, and Tonino Baliardo, and cousin to Pablo, François (Canut), Patchaï, Nicolas, and André Reyes (the sons of his cousin, flamenco artist José Reyes, with whom he performed as a duo in the 1970's), all current or former members of the Catalan rumba band Gipsy Kings.

Manitas de Plata died on the 6th. November 2014, aged 93, in a retirement home in Montpellier. He had suffered a severe heart attack in April 2013.

-- Manitas de Plata's Legacy and Acclaim

One of Manitas de Plata's recordings earned him a letter from Jean Cocteau, acclaiming him as a creator.

Upon hearing him play at Arles in 1964, Pablo Picasso is said to have exclaimed:

"That man is of greater

worth than I am!"

Picasso then proceeded to draw on Baliardo's guitar.

Australian multi-instrumentalist Chris Freeman, his student in 1971, acknowledged de Plata's influence and teachings.

Bunion cartoons created by George Martin were published in my local newspaper The Leicester Mercury.

Stitched Panorama of 7 shots with a D800 + 28mm f/1.8 lens.

So I'm super late posting this, but it's my title page for my 2012 Project Life album.
