At Northern Voice, we were presented with the cool opportunity to see what a small chunk of the blogosphere looked like in real life.

To make good use of the opportunity, we asked people to build human graphs to represent things about their blogging behaviors and other interests.

Dr. Roger Sabbadini, author of a recently published book "Unavoidable Hope" visited the Vicenza Military Community March 15.

Sabbadini addressed the audience at the post theater on Caserma Ederle during this stop on a lecture tour.

His book tells the story of the life of his father and his struggles in fascist Italy as a member of the Jewish faith. It continues with his father's struggles in America as a refugee and, ultimately, his experience as a Soldier in the U.S. Army through World War II.

The Postcard

A postally unused carte postale published by Ern. Thill of Brussels.

Also printed on the back of the card is the following:

'Ligue Nationale du Souvenir,

32, Rue de Namur,

Bruxelles".

The photograph shows the catastrophic level of destruction suffered by the Hospice Belle in Ypres during the Great War.

'Ypres'

'Ypres' by Laurence Binyon:

'She was a city of patience; of proud name,

Dimmed by neglecting Time; of beauty and loss;

Of acquiescence in the creeping moss.

But on a sudden fierce destruction came

Tigerishly pouncing: thunderbolt and flame

Showered on her streets, to shatter them and toss

Her ancient towers to ashes. Riven across,

She rose, dead, into never-dying fame.

White against heavens of storm, a ghost, she is known

To the world's ends. The myriads of the brave

Sleep round her. Desolately glorified,

She, moon-like, draws her own far-moving tide

Of sorrow and memory; toward her, each alone,

Glide the dark dreams that seek an English grave'.

The Postcard

A postcard that was published by Chapman & Son of Dawlish. The image is a glossy real photograph. The card was posted in Okehampton on Tuesday the 5th. August 1913 using a ½d. stamp. It was sent to:

Miss L. Hawkings,

40, South Street,

Park Lane,

London.

The message on the divided back of the card was as follows:

"3rd. Essex Battery,

2nd. E.A.B.,

TRFA,

Okehampton.

Dear Laurie,

I wish you were with

us, it would do you

good.

Lots of love,

Nat xxx"

Okehampton Army Camp

Okehampton Army Camp was established by the Royal Artillery in the summer of 1876 above Okehampton at Halstock Down.

The officers' stables were begun in July 1892, and the first phase was completed on the 14th. June 1894. By 1895 a permanent Field Artillery Practice Camp had been established.

Okehampton became the Headquarters of the School of Gunnery, and was the UK's most important practice camp. Batteries (horses and guns) from all over England arrived by rail, and normally three batteries were in camp using the ranges at any one time.

Pope Pius X

So what else happened on the day that Nat posted the card?

Well, on the 5th. August 1913, Pope Pius X reformed longstanding rules of canon law that had restricted the hearing of confession for members of certain religious orders.

Previously, confessions could not be heard without prior approval by a superior.

Alfred Atmore Pope

The 5th. August 1913 was not a good day for Alfred Atmore Pope, because he died on that day at his home in Farmington, Connecticut.

Alfred, who was born in North Vassalboro, Maine on the 4th. July 1842, was an American industrialist and art collector. He was the father of Theodate Pope Riddle, a noted American architect.

During the Great War the Illustrated Chronicle published photographs of soldiers and sailors from Newcastle and the North East of England, which had been in the news. The photographs were sent in by relatives and give us a glimpse into the past.

The physical collection held by Newcastle Libraries comprises bound volumes of the newspaper from 1910 to 1925. We are keen to find out more about the people in the photographs. If you recognise anyone in the images and have any stories and information to add please comment below.

Article published by Bay Area Citizen online on 4/25/16 following the time capsule event on 4/20/16.

Corrections: Harris County archivist Sarah Canby-Jackson helped with the removal of the items onsite, UHCL archivist Lauren Meyers worked with the items after the event to salvage them. Also, Jim Johnson did not work at Freeman Library in 2009; someone in the community reminded generally (not Johnson) that the capsule was there.

The Postcard

A postkarte that was published by L. Klement of Frankfurt. It was posted in Woolwich, London using a ½d. stamp on Wednesday the 18th. November 1908. The card was sent to:

Revd. Father McKenna,

Catholic Church,

Wellesley Road,

West Croydon.

There was no message, as the recipient's name and address stretched across the undivided back of the card.

St. Mary's, Croydon

The foundation stone for St. Mary's (Our Lady of Reparation) was laid in Wellesley Road in West Croydon in 1863. Father John McKenna became Parish Priest there in 1894, and remained in that post until 1914.

Ruth Wills

So what else happened on the day that the card was posted?

Well, the 18th. November 1908 was not a good day for Ruth Wills, because she died on that day.

Ruth was an English poet and factory worker.

She was born on the 22nd. December, 1826 in Leicester. Her mother, Susannah Wills, was a framework knitter, and her father, Joseph Wills, had served in the army.

As an infant Ruth suffered from a paralytic stroke causing a lifelong disability. Her father died when she was seven, forcing her to work long hours to support her mother's small income.

In 1837, when she was eleven, she began working at N. Corah & Sons’ hosiery factory on Union Street in Leicester where she continued to work until her retirement.

Wills attended a dame school for two years and a sunday school. Her parents were illiterate, but she learned to read and became a keen reader of books. She later learnt to read French and German.

As a teenager she had her first poem published in Children's Magazine. Will's poetry was also published in Leicester newspapers.

In 1861 her first collection of poems was published, titled Lays of Lowly Life. In 1868 a second volume was published, titled Lays of Lowly Life: Second Series, which included a number of poems on slavery and the oppression of women.

In later life Wills worked as a foreman and manager at the factory. Wills died on the 18th. November 1908 at home in Leicester at the age of 81.
