I was contacted recently and asked if I would sell a couple of my images so that they could be used in a magazine. I agreed, the magazine arrived in the post today. Both images were used, and one was used as a backdrop for a 2 page spread.
It's in "Paranormal" magazine, issue 27, September 2008.
I'm feeling quite chuffed :-)

Niagara Falls
Niagara Falls is 27 km (17 mi) northwest of Buffalo, New York, and 69 km (43 mi) southeast of Toronto, between the twin cities of Niagara Falls, Ontario, and Niagara Falls, New York.
Niagara Falls was formed when glaciers receded at the end of the Wisconsin glaciation (the last ice age), and water from the newly formed Great Lakes carved a path over and through the Niagara Escarpment en route to the Atlantic Ocean.
Niagara Falls is a group of three waterfalls at the southern end of Niagara Gorge, spanning the border between the province of Ontario in Canada and the state of New York in the United States.
The largest of the three is Horseshoe Falls, which straddles the international border of the two countries. It is also known as the Canadian Falls.
The smaller American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls lie within the United States. Bridal Veil Falls is separated from Horseshoe Falls by Goat Island and from American Falls by Luna Island, with both islands situated in New York.
Formed by the Niagara River, which drains Lake Erie into Lake Ontario, the combined falls have the highest flow rate of any waterfall in North America that has a vertical drop of more than 50 m (160 ft).
During peak daytime tourist hours, more than 168,000 m3 (5.9 million cu ft) of water goes over the crest of the falls every minute.
Niagara Falls is famed for its beauty and is a valuable source of hydroelectric power. Balancing recreational, commercial, and industrial uses has been a challenge for the stewards of the falls since the 19th. century.
Khuda Bakhsh
So what else happened on the day that the card was posted?
Well, the 3rd. August 1908 was not a good day for Khuda Bakhsh, because he died on that day.
Sir Khan Bahadur Khuda Bakhsh OIE FRAS, who was born on the 2nd. August 1842, was an Indian advocate, judge, philosopher, revolutionary freedom fighter, scholar and historian from Patna, Bihar.
He was the founder of the Khuda Bakhsh Oriental Library, and Chief Justice of Nizam's Supreme Court of Hyderabad from 1895 to 1898.
Khuda Bakhsh maintains a strong legacy across the Islamic World for his contributions to Literature and History.
-- Khuda Bakhsh - The Early Years
Sir Khan Bahadur Khuda Bakhsh was born into a prominent noble family in Patna, Bihar. He was brought up under the guidance of his father, Sir Muhammed Bakhsh, a famous advocate and Zamindar from Patna.
His family was distinguished in scholarship, and one of his distant ancestors, Qazi Haibatullah, took part in compiling the Fatawa 'Alamgiri.
The House of Bakhsh were the official record-keepers who were given the responsibility by the Mughal Emperors of recording day-to-day activities across the Mughal Empire.
Khuda's father was a lawyer working in Bankipur, and although he was not wealthy, due to his passion for Persian and Arabic literature, he had amassed a collection of 1,400 manuscripts.
Khuda Bakhsh later added to this collection.
Khuda initially studied in Calcutta under the care of a Nawab Amir Ali Khan Bahadur. However his father's illness meant that he was recalled home to Bankipur to start work in order to help his family financially.
-- Khuda Bakhsh's Career
Khuda started his career as a Peshkar in 1868. He later became the Government pleader of Patna in 1880.
During this time his father became very ill. In his dying breath, he asked his son to open a public library. Khuda inherited 1,400 manuscripts from his father.
In 1890 Bakhsh built a two-story library which was inaugurated in 1891 by the former Lieutenant-Governor of Bengal, Sir Charles Elliott. Bakhsh donated his manuscripts and books to the public on the 14th. January 1891. He later expanded the collection to 4,000 manuscripts and 80,000 books.
He became the first director of the library, and remained in that position until his death, except for a brief period from 1895 to 1898 when he served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Hyderabad.
Khuda Bakhsh was a great friend of Shibil Nomani and Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, with whom he worked in order to introduce multiple reform in the education system of British India.
Sir Khuda Bakhsh was approached by representatives of the British Museum who made a stunning offer to purchase his collection, but he declined. He informed V. C. Scott O'Connor, an orientalist based in Edinburgh, England:
"I am a poor man, and the sum they offered me
was a princely fortune, but could I ever part for
money with that to which my father and I have
dedicated our lives?"
No. The collection is for Patna, and the gift shall
be laid at the feet of the Patna public".
The library was designated as an institution of national importance on the 26th. December 1969 by an act of Parliament.
-- The Death and Legacy of Khuda Bakhsh
Khuda Bakhsh was a very simple man with great vision and commitment. He died at the age of 66 on the 3rd. August 1908, and was laid to rest in the library grounds.
The Khuda Bakhsh Award for scholars for their lifetime achievements in the fields in which the library specializes was created in his honor in 1992.
Mahatma Gandhi commented on the legacy of Bakhsh:
"I heard about this beautiful library nine years
ago and I've been looking forward to seeing it
ever since.
I was very happy to see the priceless treasure
of rare books here. I pay tribute to the great
founder of this library who has spent every
penny to give this invaluable treasure to India."
The historian, Jadunath Sarkar, referred to Khuda Bakhsh as the "Indian Bodley" in reference to Thomas Bodley, the founder of the Bodleian Library in Oxford.

The Postcard
A postally unused Édition Artistique postcard published by P. Coustoulides of Alexandria in Egypt.
Alexandria
Alexandrie or Alexandria, nicknamed the Pearl of the Mediterranean, is the second-largest city in Egypt after Cairo, and a major economic centre, extending about 32 km (20 mi) along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea in the north central part of the country.
Its low elevation on the Nile delta makes it highly vulnerable to rising sea levels.
Alexandria is an important industrial center because of its natural gas and oil pipelines from Suez. Alexandria is also a popular tourist destination.
Alexandria - The Early Years
Alexandria was founded around a small, ancient Egyptian town c. 332 BC by Alexander the Great. It became an important center of Hellenistic civilization and remained the capital of Ptolemaic (Greek) Egypt and Roman and Byzantine Egypt for almost 1000 years, until the Muslim conquest of Egypt in AD 641, when a new capital was founded at Fustat (later absorbed into Cairo).
Hellenistic Alexandria was best known for the Lighthouse of Alexandria (Pharos), one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World; its Great Library (the largest in the ancient world; now replaced by a modern one); and the Necropolis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages.
Alexandria was the second most powerful city of the ancient world after Rome. Ongoing maritime archaeology in the harbor of Alexandria, which began in 1994, is revealing details of Alexandria both before the arrival of Alexander, when a city named Rhacotis existed there, and during the Ptolemaic dynasty.
Alexandria - Later Development
From the late 18th century, Alexandria became a major centre of the international shipping industry, and one of the most important trading centers in the world, both because it profited from the easy overland connection between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea, and from the lucrative trade in Egyptian cotton.

The Hôtel des Anglais
The excellent website scarletfinders.co.uk tells us that in the first winter of the Great War, the Duchess of Westminster's Hospital, afterwards No. 1 Red Cross, was opened at the Casino in Le Touquet.
A pressing need arose for the housing of wives and close relatives who were allowed to visit wounded men at the hospital. Accordingly the British Red Cross Society opened the Hôtel des Anglais in October 1915 as a Red Cross hostel.
The hostel was well situated, being within 3 minutes' walk of the hospital. It had two wings connected by long dining rooms, with a shady garden on the edge of the Forest of Le Touquet.
The Hôtel des Anglais was the first hostel to receive relatives, and it acted as a pioneer for further hostels. It remained open for three years until August 1918.
The guests, who were not required to pay for their stay, were very diverse - wealthy people, village shopkeepers, labourers and their wives, suffered together, feared together, hoped together, and helped each other.
None needed help more than the wives and mothers and fathers racked by fear and anxiety, prolonged in many cases from week to week, and sometimes for months.
For much more fascinating information about the hotel's rôle in the Great War, please refer to scarletfinders.co.uk
Le Touquet
Le Touquet-Paris-Plage, commonly referred to as Le Touquet, is a commune near Etaples, in the Pas-de-Calais department in northern France. It has a population of 5,355 but welcomes up to 250,000 people during the summer.
Le Touquet has a reputation as the most elegant holiday resort of northern France, the playground of rich Parisians (hence its full name), with many luxury hotels.
Since the mid-1990's, Le Touquet’s villas have become extremely fashionable amongst architecture lovers throughout Europe who have rediscovered the 'folie' of seaside architecture of both the Roaring Twenties and the 1930's.
Town Trails
Today the town tourist office offers organised trails to see outstanding examples of 19th and 20th century domestic architecture, which are now preserved and protected.
Le Touquet's Early Years
In the 19th. century it was an area of wild sand dunes and forest - part of a hunting estate.
In 1902 Allen Stoneham and John Whitley bought the land through their company Le Touquet Syndicate Ltd., and were instrumental in developing the town into a golf and gambling resort.
It became known as “Paris by the Sea”, and strict building regulations encouraged the most talented architects to create imaginative and innovative developments. The most famous local architect is Louis Quetelart.
The Great War
During most of World War I, Le Touquet was the home of the Duchess of Westminster's (No 1 British Red Cross Society) Hospital for wounded British troops.
The No. 2 Canadian Stationary Hospital had the distinction of being the first Canadian Unit to land on French soil. No. 2 Stationary opened at the Hotel du Golf at Le Touquet on November 27, 1914.
All the 142 British Commonwealth war graves in Le Touquet's Communal Cemetery are from the hospitals. In the same cemetery a wooden obelisk was erected by the commune's lifeboatmen in honour of the British.
H. G. Wells
In 1909, H. G. Wells and Amber Reeves fled to Le Touquet in an abortive elopement. The two returned to Britain after a number of weeks, though Amber later gave birth to Wells's daughter, Anna-Jane Blanco White, after the relationship ended.
Noël Coward
In the 1920's, Noël Coward and the 'smart set' from England spent weekends here, and commissioned more outstanding villa designs echoing traditional and ultra-modern domestic styles.
P. G. Wodehouse
P. G. Wodehouse lived in Le Touquet from 1934 to 1939.

Un anno dopo, nel 2002, esce "Give me a good reason to wake up", primo album ufficiale dei Motel Connection, seguito da "Two", singolo di enorme successo.

Opening Act of Lordi at Alcatraz in Milan, Dirty Passion, a Swedish Malmö based rock band formed in 2006 by members Emil Ekbladh (vocals), Christopher Olsson (guitar), Björn Wilander (bass) and Markus Winberg (drums). With main influences from the seventies' and eighties' rock scene the band plays all original material which would be best described as classic rock. Since the start, Dirty Passion have been recording and touring intensively, gaining a rapidly growing fan base - locally as well as abroad. With more than 100 concerts played, the band has rocked native venues like KB (Malmö), Mejeriet (Lund), The Tivoli (Helsingborg) and Sticky Fingers (Gothenburg) and foreign venues like The Underworld (London, UK), Borderline (Pisa, Italy), The Rock (Copenhagen, Denmark) and Matrix (Bochum, Germany). Dirty Passion have played support act to bands like Saxon, Y&T and Towers of London and in early 2010 they supported Faster Pussycat and Enuff Z'Nuff for a month long European tour, playing 22 concerts in seven different countries. A debut album is currently in the makings and hopefully it will see the light of day this winter. Some bands build it up on good playing skills and others on good song material. Dirty Passion do both. These four highly technically skilled natural born rockers, with loads of experience, will always bring you the best kick ass rock - on stage as well as in the studio. While other bands come and go, one things is for sure: What you see here is only the beginning.

Portfolio online
Published: 1959 Author: E. M. Belknap; Publisher: New York; Crown Publishers; Hardback. Fifth printing. 338pp. Filled with over 440 b/w photographs. An almost entirely photographic guide to Milk Glass.
from the London County Council Survey of London, Volume XXII published in 1950:
“The name Cardinal’s Hat (or Cap), for a house on the site of the present No. 49 Bankside, and for the narrow alley which runs down beside it, dates from at least the time of Elizabeth and perhaps earlier. The suggestion that it was named in compliment to Cardinal Beaufort is attractive but untenable, for Beaufort died in 1447, and the original Cardinal’s Hat was not built till many years later.
The site was described in 1470 as “a void piece of ground”. It is possible that it was named after Cardinal Wolsey who was Bishop of Winchester from 1529-30, although no buildings are mentioned in a sale of the site from John Merston, fishmonger, to Thomas Tailloure, fishmonger in 1533. Stowe lists the Cardinal’s Hat as one of the Stewhouses but he may possibly have been mistaken, including it only because it was one of the more prominent inns on Bankside in his day.
It is shown in the Token Book for 1593 as in occupation of John Raven and as one of a group of houses which in the book for 1588 is described as “Mr. Broker’s Rentes”. Hugh Browker, later the owner of the Manor of Paris Garden, was in possession of ground there in 1579 and it seems likely that he was responsible for the formation of Cardinal’s Cap Alley if not for the building of the original house.
Thomas Mansfield was the tenant of the inn when Edward Alleyn dined there with the “vestrye men” of St. Saviour’s parish in December 1617.
A few years later John Taylor, the water poet makes reference to having supper with “the players” at the Cardinal’s Hat on Bankside. Milchisedeck Fritter, brewer, who tenanted the house from 1627 to 1674 issued a halfpenny token. He was assessed for seven hearths in the hearth tax rolls.
The freehold was sold by Thomas Browker to Thomas Hudson in 1667. The later died in 1688 leaving his “messuages on Bankside” to his sister Mary Greene, with reversion to his great nieces Mary and Sarah Bruce. It was at about this date that the older part of the present house was built. During the 18th century it was bought by the Sells family who both owned and occupied it until 1830. in 1841 Edward Sells of Grove Lane, Camberwell, bequeathed his freehold messauge and yard and stables, being No. 49 Bankside, then in the tenure of George Holditch, merchant, to his son, Vincent Sells. The house is now owned by Major Malcolm Munthe. It has previously been occupied by Anna Lee, the actress.”

In 2009, a handful of London-based musicians travelled to Nairobi in Kenya to collaborate with local musicians there. The project was set up by Hetty Hughes and her friend Aaron Abraham, co-founders of a voluntary organisation called Art of Protest established in order to promote local musicians and rappers. Hetty and Aaron were disheartened by the way they were being sidelined and overlooked, so they set about inviting some London-based musicians to visit Nairobi and collaborate. It was a loose arrangement… there was no specific agenda other than to bring the musicians together, exchange ideas and enjoy the results.
The traditional folkloric music of Kenya has not received the same global exposure as that of Nigeria, Ethiopia, South Africa or North Africa for example and one of the objectives of this project was to try and build on this. The band draw on a broad spectrum of African influences, from Fela Kuti and Tony Allen to the likes of Thomas Mapfumo and Oumou Sangare, but bar Jesse’s participation with Damon Albarn’s Africa Express, this was the first opportunity for Jesse Hackett (keys), Louis Hackett (bass), Sam Lewis (guitar), Chris Morphitis (bouzouki/guitar) and Tom Skinner (drums) to visit specifically for a musical project.

The physical collection held by Newcastle Libraries comprises bound volumes of the newspaper from 1910 to 1925. We are keen to find out more about the people in the photographs. If you recognise anyone in the images and have any stories and information to add please comment below.
