My Blackhawk Down photo published in the 2009-4 issue of ATM, a Czech Republic defense magazine. The article is about helicopter seats, and I guess they needed an image of a crash.

This is an update to my annual fitness statistics. These fitness statistics replace the earlier:-

Runtastic Stats for Year 2018 - [My photo on Flickr]

As of 2017, my swimming decreased and my cycling increased. This is due to the closure of the Riverside Leisure Centre pool due to a fire on 21 February 2017, at 4.16pm, Information from the local authority suggests a possible July 2021 date for reopening of this swimming pool.

(24/07/2021): See Tweets links below giving details of reopening of Riverside L.C. in Exeter.

The advent of Covid-19 has further altered my fitness regime. I have now lost swimming and badminton. I've attempted, as of 2020, to balance that loss with further increases of both cycling and hiking. The year 2020 was a particularly good year for cycling.

In radio, dall’11 gennaio, il nuovo singolo con Zara Larsson, “Holding Out For You”.

The Hay Rodeo, 6th October - minus horses because of the Equine Virus (Horse 'Flu) epidemic. There were still Steers, Bulls and the "MuttonBusters" - and I took many photos for the Rodeo Club and the Tourism Office. Here is one sequence of three shots that tells the story of one Bullride - a story similar to many, where the Bulls generally had the better of their courageous riders. Eight of my photos (including this panel of 3) from the Rodeo were published in the local newspaper, and it is a good feeling! :-) I also emailed some photos to people I know in town and to the local Tourism-Event promotion officer, who sent them on to another newspaper, "The Land".

The Postcard

A postally unused carte postale that was published by Huret of 15, Rue de St.-Quentin Paris.

The card, which has a divided back, was printed by Ch. Bernard, 27 Rue des Cloys, Paris, although they didn't do a particularly good job of it - the image is of rather poor quality.

Enemy artillery during the Great War targeted churches, cathedrals and other tall buildings because of their value as observation posts. Shells aimed at churches which just missed their target tended to fall in the churchyards, throwing up gravestones, coffins and corpses.

'The Shell' by H. Smalley Sarson

'Shrieking its message the flying death

Cursed the resisting air,

Then buried its nose by a battered church,

A skeleton gaunt and bare.

The brains of science, the money of fools

Had fashioned an iron slave

Destined to kill, yet the futile end

Was a child's uprooted grave'.

Visé à Paris 216

The card bears the imprimatur 'Visé à Paris' followed by a unique reference number. This means that the image was inspected and deemed by the military authorities in the French capital not to be a security risk.

'Visé à Paris' indicates that the card was published during or soon after the Great War.

Abba Eban

"History teaches us that men and

nations behave wisely when they

have exhausted all other alternatives".

This was said during a speech in London UK on 16th. December 1970 by Abba Eban (1915-2002), an Israeli diplomat and writer.

Foncquevillers

Foncquevillers is a commune in the Pas-de-Calais department in the Hauts-de-France region of France. It is a farming village situated 12 miles (19.3 km) south of Arras.

Foncquevillers in the Great War

Foncquevillers was on the Allied front line during almost all of the period of hostilities between 1914 and 1918, and was almost destroyed as a result.

The neighbouring village of Gommecourt to the east, in German hands, was the subject of an assault starting from Foncquevillers on the 1st. July 1916. This formed the northernmost part of the Battle of the Somme.

British troops taking part in the attack came from the 46th. (North Midland) Division, and many are buried in the Foncquevillers Military Cemetery.

After the war Foncquevillers established a friendship with the East Midlands cities of Derby and Nottingham which continues to this day. The Hôtel de Ville in Foncquevillers has a plaque dedicated to "Derby, Notre Marraine" - "To Derby, our Godmother".

Places of Interest in Foncquevillers

-- The church of Notre-Dame (shown in the photograph), which was rebuilt after the Great War.

-- The Foncquevillers Military Cemetery, which contains 648 Commonwealth burials of the Great War. There are two graves of men from the Chinese Labour Corps, one of a French civilian, and four belong to German prisoners. The remainder are Allied servicemen's graves.

-- At the side of the church is a memorial to five Canadian airmen who died when a Halifax bomber crashed nearby in June 1944. Parts of the aircraft have been preserved in Foncquevillers.

LITTLE Sophie has proved to be a real ray of sunshine - by using her creative skills to help her school harness solar power.

New solar panels have been installed on the roof at Lockwood Primary School, in Boosbeck, East Cleveland, as part of a drive to save both energy and money.

And six-year-old Sophie put her artistic talents to good use to mark the development, by designing an electronic display panel for the main hall which allows children to check exactly how much power their school is generating.

someone liked kim's pic enough to request it for use. pretty cool :)

The famous town of Consuegra is situated in the Castilla La Mancha region of Spain about 60km south-east of the provincial capital, Toledo, and approximately 130km south of Madrid. The town, which has a population of about 10,000, is relatively unassuming but typically Spanish - plenty of interesting buildings, monuments and churches in the old, historic, central part of Consuegra.

But it is above the town where history and scenic delights await the traveller. Mainly through Cervante's book, 'Don Quixote' - published in 1605 - Castilla La Mancha has become synonymous with windmills and the finest examples of restored ones can be found in Consuegra, itself. Several of these beautiful mills spike the hill just outside the town; affording truly spectacular views of the nearby 12th-century castle, the town below and the flat plains stretching into the far-off horizon. The castle was once a stronghold when Consuegra was the seat and priory of the 'Knights of San Juan', the Spanish branch of the 'Knight's Hospitallers of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem'. Other windmills can also be found in Mota del Cuervo, Tomelloso and Campo de Criptana but those in Consuegra remain incomparable and provide a truly remarkable spectacle.

There are plenty more photos of Consuegra and other Spanish towns/locations if you take a look at my 'Albums' page, www.flickr.com/photos/36623892@N00/sets/ - thank you.

Suspended Animation Classic #896 First published February 26, 2006 (#9) (Dates are approximate)

Anthem

By Mark Allen

A few weeks ago, I was thrilled to see something on the spinner rack at a bookstore I hadn't expected to see; a comic written by Roy Thomas. For those who don't know, Roy is a highly-respected figure within the comics industry, having been writing and/or editing since the'60's. Not having penned a story in a number of years, however, Anthem #1 is fairly solid proof that there's no rust on that guy.

Anthem is the story of seven World War II superheroes who are awakened from a type of suspended animation during America's most desperate hour. A bit derivative, I'll admit, but not without its share of imagination. Thomas leaves lots of questions to be answered, peaking the reader's interest. Not to mention the state of the war; let's just say it's not a version you'll find in the history books. Thomas does a respectable job of pulling readers in, with some well-placed action at the beginning, some startling revelations in the middle, and a cliff-hanger ending.

Artist Daniel Acuna's work, despite appearing a bit "clunky" at times, with slightly rigid, sometimes awkward figures, reveals a great deal of insight into storytelling and characterization. His imaginative use of panels, along with his expressive characters make the book as nice to look at as it is to read. It would be interesting to watch his art develop, but, judging from the credits on a reproduction of the cover for the second issue, another artist will be replacing him. In my opinion, this is never a good thing for a book that's just starting out, as some level of consistency is necessary in order to keep readers' attention. But, I'm hoping Anthem can overcome that particular challenge.

Anthem #1 is a good start, and recommended for those who enjoy superhero action in the tradition of D.C.'s Justice Society of America and Marvel's Invaders. Look for it at comics shops, bookstores, or online retailers and auctions.
