Looking rather neglected and unloved is PS Wingfield Castle, Hartlepool Docks, 20th February 2019. Launched on the 24th September 24th 1934 it was built for the London and North Eastern Railway at Hartlepool by William Gray, for service on the Hull - New Holland ferry service. It was one of three paddler steamers maintaining a year-round service for passengers, cars, and cargo until withdrawn in 1974 following the opening of the Humber Suspension Bridge. Sold a number of times and finally lying derelict in Swansea for a number of years until purchased by Hartlepool Borough Council and returned to Hartlepool in June 1986. Restored as a museum ship it was extensively refurbished again in 2006/07 with the saloon areas converted for use for educational seminars, corporate events etc. However little seems to have been done in recent years to maintain the vessel and it appears to be decaying at an ever faster rate.
The Pevensey is special because it is an authentic paddlesteamer with its original steam engine. Today the Pevensey is known to people all over the world for its role as “Philadelphia” in the Australian television mini-series ‘All the River Run’, made in Echuca in 1982-1983.
PS Waverley approaching Clevedon Pier to collect passengers on the first day of her 2023 Bristol channel timetable
PS Waverley is the last seagoing passenger-carrying paddle steamer in the world. Built in 1946, she sailed from Craigendoran on the Firth of Clyde to Arrochar on Loch Long until 1973.[3] Bought by the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society (PSPS), she has been restored to her 1947 appearance and now operates passenger excursions around the British coast.
Since 2003, Waverley has been listed in the National Historic Fleet by National Historic Ships UK as "a vessel of pre-eminent national importance".
