May 17 was the International Day Against Homophobia. A small demonstration (about 50 people per an news article) was planned in front of the old parliament build on Rustaveli Avenue. A much larger group (estimated by one news source at5,000) from nationalist and church organizations protested the planned demonstration. A very large police presence was meant to keep the peace between the two groups. While there may have been less violence than would otherwise had occurred, overall the police failed. The demonstration was broken up before it really began and the protesters attacked both the police and any vehicle that was thought to be carrying a demonstrator away from the scene (including the car of the US Ambassador).
It is safe to say most of the protesters oppose homosexuality (Patriarch Ilia II referred to it as an 'anomaly and disease' and an 'insult' to Georgian traditions). Even some people who are more sympathetic to the gay rights cause, however, were not fully supportive of the demonstration, which was occurring during a period of national mourning for three soldiers killed in Afghanistan whose bodies had just arrived back in Georgia the day before.
Most of the photos are from Freedom Square Metro station where we were meeting Nino. Several photos were taken in front of the museum on the other side of the Rustaveli. We had planned to go to the museum, but it decided to close until after 2:00 because of the protest.

Photos taken during the protests that erupted when the National Socialist Movement (Neo-Nazis) marched to the Phoenix Federal building. The NSM was there to protest a federal judge's decision to 'water down' the SB1070 immigration legislation. I've never seen a more disgusting group of people assembled in one place, but it was their right to have their march and to say what they wanted to say. Fortunately the Phoenix Police Department was there to keep things under control. Pepper spray was used but that was only when the anarchists got too close. Quite a day I can tell you.
Protesting the Kinder Morgan pipeline, which will bring crude oil and refined petroleum from the oil sands in Alberta to Vancouver, British Columbia, presumably to be shipped to China. This will increase tanker traffic in and is a danger to our already threatened marine life in the Inside Passage, where two recent spills in two months have already occurred this year. An estimated 5,000 protesters joined the march, from the City Hall to the downtown library.

Seen at last Saturday's anti-BNP, anti-fascist protest in front of the Houses of Parliament.
My rough translation: "Fuck Patriotism"
There's a movement these days to teach kids patriotism in schools. This makes a lot of people - especially the ones who have studied history - very nervous....
The protesters not only shout at the patients as they walk into the clinic. They also have these signs that are designed to shock and intimidate the patients.
2 months on the global momentum's been diluted whilst systemic racism continues.
This is how we make a stand in the UK. We ignore the Government telling us protests are illegal but we make our voice heard whilst wearing masks!
Protests took place in Rochdale on Saturday 22 July 2017.
The Force worked to ensure the events took place safely and ensuring the right to protest while minimising any disruption to the local community.
Chief Superintendent Neil Evans, Borough Commander, said: “This has been a challenging day with hundreds of people attending Rochdale town centre for the protest.
“I understand that these events are very emotive and that tensions may run high when there are polarised views and counter-protests.
“However, we have worked jointly with Rochdale Council and the community to ensure the most effective way to facilitate and manage this protest in a balanced and safe manner.
“This has very much been a community focused operation aimed at reducing the impact of the protest on the normal lives of people in Rochdale.
“I would like also like to thank members of the community who have acted as mediators and helped the smooth running of today’s event.
“In order to ensure we could deliver a safe operation we deployed large numbers of police which meant another busy weekend for officers, who have worked long hours in challenging circumstances to look after our communities.
“It was pleasing to see that this protest did not stop the people of Rochdale from going about their normal activities.”

The crowd protesting the shutdown at the Ohio Statehouse yesterday...
I went downtown planning to just walk around and take a few photos on the mostly empty streets. I knew there were protests, but I didn't realize all this was happening until I got down there. I stayed across the street and far away from them, but I felt I had to document the craziness...

Coverage of the "Protest the Pope" demonstration in London during Joseph Ratzinger's (aka Pope Benedict) state visit - 18th September 2010. Allegedly 20,000 marched from Hyde Park to Downing Street.
Thousands joined the march in Melbourne on Friday April 10, shutting down the centre of the city for hours.
Protesters causing complete mayhem this morning in the west end so I biked down to shoot some of this ruckus. Personally speaking, I think the protesters are causing more harm than good. Are they not wasting more tax money by protesting? Choppers and cops don't come cheap people.
