Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in Snaresbrook, London here are the details of the project.
The Steel Garden in Snaresbrook, London E11
BRIEF:
The client of this project had very clear ideas about what the space was to be used for and how she would like it to function. The existing bay tree, ivy and lavender bush was to be kept, as was the existing shed. The existing fences were old and worn and needed to be replaced.
The space should be both relaxing and suitable for entertaining, with a shaded area for ‘quiet time’ and a sunny area for
al fresco dining, and need be designed for adults only.
The only practical consideration within the space was that a significant proportion of the space is overshadowed by a large beech tree in the next-door garden, which would influence the positioning of foliage and hard landscaping features within the garden..
SOLUTION:
This garden was styled along the lines of a contemporary courtyard garden utilising a fusion of materials. ‘Old’ materials were mingled with ‘new’ in the use of stainless steel planters
on cobbles, and slate chippings bordering decking. The existing fences were replaced and the space was given extra privacy with the addition of trellis to the top of the new fences.
A planting palette consisting of hardy and half-hardy specimens was chosen, with heavy emphasis on foliage and architectural plants.
A combination of evergreen and semi evergreen plants, intertwined with scented white blooms, were selected to give year round interest to the space, with ‘showstoppers’ such
as 'Dicksonia antarctica‘ and 'Cortaderia selloana‘ used to give the garden an added ‘wow’ factor. A sense of perspective and the impression of different levels was achieved with plants growing up through decking laid directly behind the house.
A spacious cobbled area gave the space a lived-in feeling, with the addition of large established plants to further detract from the sense of ‘newness’ that is so often present
in a recent build.
The layout of the garden used the idea of ‘screening’, carefully placing materials and plants to create different areas in the garden and generate the illusion of space.
TESTIMONIAL:
“Choosing Earth Designs to design and landscape my garden was a great decision!
Katrina really listened to what I wanted - and to what I didn't! The proposed design totally fulfilled my brief and what's more was on budget, with no hidden extras. I also appreciated the various options that Katrina had considered and built into
the proposal.
The actual implementation was carried out thoughtfully and totally professionally, with the minimum of inconvenience and mess. And the final result is just stunning.”

I dropped into this informal meeting regarding 2015 Community Transit Service Changes on my way to a job interview at Paine Field and talked quietly with Community Transit planners regarding (mostly) the needs of Paine Field to have better transit. Basically Paine Field leaders need to pay for and build bus stops for Community Transit to provide service.

When Michael Behrmann wanted to propose to his girlfriend Erika Peace, he wanted it to be memorable. So he booked a "Love Tour" at the Currier Museum of Art for their anniversary and came up with a unique work of art to incorporate into the tour. He recorded his voice asking the question "Will you marry me?" and sent it to a company that creates art out of sound waves and had it printed on canvas. The tour concluded in the museum's historic court where Erika read the question on the canvas and very happily agreed.
Congratulations to you Erika and Michael. Wishing you a lifetime of love, happiness and art!
Birmingham Against The Cuts Demonstration
“Clegg, Cameron, hear us say – MAKE THE GREEDY BANKERS PAY!” echoed through the centre of Birmingham’s streets today as up to 1500 hundred trade unionists, students and community groups marched against the proposed CON-DEM cuts.
Despite obstruction from the ConDem council the demonstration gathered at Birmingham Cathedral and marched through the main shopping streets. As the march reached a branch of Barclays protestors stopped and chanted ‘pay your taxes’. As they reached each of Philip Green’s shops the chant was repeated. BHS shut their doors.
At the same time as the march UKuncut protestors were targetting a number of shops for not paying tax.
The demonstration was attended by activists from all of the major trade unions in the city, including UNISON, GMB, CYWU, UNITE, NUT, UNITE, UCU, NASUWT, PCS, CWU as well as campaigns such as BARAC (Black Activist Rising Against Cuts), DPAC (Disabled People Against the Cuts), UK UNCUT, community choirs and residents associations.
Graeme Horn, joint Branch Secretary of Birmingham UNISON Branch said “This is a great turn out and will give heart to activists campaigning for a YES vote in the forthcoming strike ballot of workers in Birmingham City Council.”
On Tuesday the 1st March Birmingham City Council intend to set a budget making £212 million of cuts, the first of a £320 million cuts package. This will mean a wholesale attack on the most vulnerable in our city, the closure of many services and job cuts of over 7,000 council workers.
Campaigners talked of making it as difficult as possible for the council to pass the budget, which went down very well with the crowd. Birmingham Against the Cuts is calling for a blockade of the council meeting from 2pm.
This illustrates the strength of feeling for stepping up the action to defend jobs and services in the run up to the massive TUC demonstration in London on the 26th March. It is clear no matter what happens in the council chamber on Tuesday, the protest on Saturday showed the determination to resist every cut.
Last week 43 people met at a meeting called by Cotteridge Against the Cuts to resist the closure of the Neighbourhood Office and Cotteridge Church Day Centre. In Kings Heath 90 people met to discuss organising to save Kingsheath Library. In another meeting 50 people attended a BARAC meeting at the Afro-Caribbean Centre.

I'm not sure how long these solar panels last and when they have run their course how do they dispose of them safely as I'm assuming they have Cadmium in them like the ones on roofs of houses. In the leaflet they just say...at the end of our lease period (usually 25-30 years) the framework will be removed without harming the land....the panels aren't mentioned.
Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in Wanstead, London*. Here are the details of the project
Brief: This client wanted to tidy and improve her existing garden, adding features without radically altering the overall layout. A large portion of the lawn was to be retained and a poorly laid patio needed attention. Provision was to be made for a plethora of children's garden toys and a large timber play-frame. The client also wanted to include a large bespoke home office within the design.
Solution: The solution retained the existing layout as much as possible. The existing random lay sandstone patio was lifted and re-laid, and a new sandstone pathway created running down the left hand side of the space. A series of tall archways, created from chunky new landscaping poles and installed at intervals along the path, offer a visually imposing feature and guides one's eye down the garden.
The path terminates in a sandstone circle in the centre of which is installed a stainless steel water feature. A sculptural screen, comprising a succession of upright landscaping poles of decreasing heights, encloses the sandstone circle in a semi-circle around its edge. Beyond this area space was left for the installation of a large bespoke garden office (not manufactured or installed by Earth Designs).
An additional bed was created across the back of the space, to create a separate children's play area in the garden in which the client installed a large timber climbing structure. The existing planting was supplemented with a scheme of strong colours chosen for year round interest. Several existing 'sky rocket' conifers were replanted in the bed running across the back of the space to help screen the client's shed and large climbing frame.
The lighting was kept simple, with stainless steel down-lighters on each post of the timber arches and a large number of low voltage spotlights nestled throughout the beds.

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in Battersea, London*. Here are the details of the project
Brief
The clients have lived in the house for a few years. The garden has not changed since they moved in and has a poorly designed layout which does not make use of all the available space. It also has several trip hazards, making it unsuitable for their small children. The brief is to provide as much usable floor area as possible for their two young children to play, while retaining an area in which adults can relax and entertain. It is important that the garden retains a ‘garden’ feel, so the clients have requested lots of greenery. The garden is overlooked from the houses along the rear boundary, so the inclusion of a tree would be an asset. The clients prefer stone paving as a surface.
Solution
The garden will be paved throughout with a series of contrasting Indian sandstone circles. A large ‘Autumn Brown’ paved circle in the centre of the garden will create the illusion of space and optically push the edges of the garden outward. Fixed, curved seating, planted behind with scented lavender, will be installed in the back right hand corner around the edge of the sandstone circle. Statuesque standard bay trees will grace the entrance to the space, which will feature a fixed bench seat and table for dining. The flooring directly adjoining the back door will be a ‘Mint Fossil’ Sandstone paving circle.
The area outside the conservatory doors along the side return, which is rarely used, will feature an ‘Autumn Brown’ sandstone paved circle, with a central stainless steel sphere water feature to act as a focal point for this ‘dead’ space.
The height of the low boundary wall running down the right hand side of the space will be raised with the addition of trellis and climbers, whilst a silver birch tree will be planted in the bottom left of the garden to screen the garden from the neighbours beyond. Repetition of box balls along the arc of the large paved circle will add rhythm to the design and will help give the garden structure and form.

This plan would have tried to alleviate the limited through streets across Market Street by extending Grant Street and Mason Street south to Brannan through the middle of existing blocks.
South of Market blocks *are* too long, but the new streets would have been too wide (90 feet between curbs) to be very pleasant to cross or walk along.
