The Tesla Coil

A student volunteer holds a fluorescent light bulb near a Tesla coil - an instrument that transforms electricity, making it higher voltage, but lower current and very high frequency (i.e. safer), and creating an electric field.

When the student holds a fluorescent lightbulb in this electric field, it can light up without directly touching the coil, often up to a foot away. Energy is transformed from electricity to light - no cord required!

Exploring Energy is one of three program topics available in the Museum's exciting Science on Stage outreach presentations!
