The Winston-Salem State University Choir is one of the oldest student organizations on the campus. There is evidence to prove that the institution of the choir predates the Department of Fine Arts/ Music, of which it is now a part. In the illustrious past of the choir, names such as Noah Ryder appear as one of the founding fathers of both the choir and the Department of Music. After Noah Ryder, famous composer and conductor, the choir was led by Dr. James A. Dillard. Other composers/conductors that have continued the unforgettable traditions of the choir have been Dr. Roland Allison, Dr. Permilla Dunston, Dr. Robert Morris, and Dr. James B. Kinchen, Jr.
The University Choir is now under the leadership of D'Walla Simmons Burke. This ensemble has performed commissioned works, such as On Imagination and I Too by Undine Smith Moore, Recent Reflections on Deep River by Michael Williams and Come Sunday arranged by S. Van Dixon. The choir also sings with the Winston-Salem Symphony Orchestra and the Gateways Festival Orchestra when major works are programmed.

Area students join the MSSU honors program this morning during the annual honors program signing ceremony in Webster's Corely Auditorium.
Under the direction of Dr. Michael Howarth and Rachel Stanley, students in the Honors Program have the opportunity to become part of a community of scholars, increasing their awareness of self, culture, and ways of knowing, while developing a sense of positive interdependence with each other and with their Honors professors. Honors scholars have the opportunity to model the ideal university experience—excelling in coursework beyond that available in regular courses; actively participating in other areas of campus life such as cultural events, clubs and athletics; performing community service and international study, with appropriate preparation and post-study reflection; and in their senior year, producing original research or a creative project in their field of study, under the guidance of a professional faculty mentor. USG successfully hosted the first annual Achieving Collegiate Excellence and Success (ACES) Summer Bridge Program from June 16-19, 2014. ACES seeks to support students and create a seamless pathway from high school to college completion.
This year's theme was "Why Not You" and focused on career preparation and exploration. Students participated in activities that developed leadership, teamwork, and interpersonal skills essential for success in today's workforce.
Over 250 rising seniors attended the program. Coaching and support will continue for ACES scholars as they pursue their education with Montgomery County Public Schools, Montgomery College, and the Universities at Shady Grove.
