Front cover of an eight-page Crewe Kings Speedway match programme (1d), issued in March 1970, for a visit to Earle Street by British League Division Two rivals Rochdale Hornets. The teams were contesting the first leg of a Player's No 6 Trophy tie.
Speedway was staged at the British Railways Sports Ground, Earle Street, in 1929-32 and between 1969 and 1976. The circuit, a whopping 436 yards, the longest in British speedway, was used for practice between 1976 and 1979. Open meetings took place in 1976, with Crewe opting for the nickname Locos. Sold to a developer, the site is now buried beneath a retail park.
