Special souvenir programme produced to celebrate the 21st anniversary of the Ritz Cinema, Alice Street, Keighley in February 1959. The cover features a still from the George Pal movie 'Tom Thumb' starring Russ Tamblyn. Copy of photograph provided by Trevor Booth.

The Ritz Cinema at the junction of Lord Street with Alice Street, opened on Monday 28th February 1938. It was built on a site that had been occupied by various small wooden buildings that housed several smaller businesses, which were compulsorily purchased in 1936 to make way for the building of the new cinema. These businesses included engineers Schofield Brothers, shopfitters and undertakers Thomas Heaps and Sons, monumental mason Robinson Pickard, and agricultural dairy engineers Smith Brothers.

The cinema was the eighth and, to-date, most recent cinema to be built in the town. It designed by Verity & Beverley Ltd. (renowned theatre and cinema architects) as the most luxurious cinema in the town. It seated 1,526 and included a cafe-restaurant which seated 100. It was fitted with a ‘Mighty Compton Organ’, played on the opening day by Wilfrid Southworth. It also had a car park. The cinema was officially opened by the town’s Mayor, Councillor Wilfred Southwell, and the first film to be shown was Frank Capra’s ‘Lost Horizon’ starring Ronald Colman and Jane Wyatt.

In the later years of the 1950s and well into the 1960s, the cinema also served as a live-theatre for productions by the Keighley Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society. This was following the closure of the Hippodrome Theatre in the town in October 1956. The relocation was not without challenges given the purpose for which the building had been designed.

In February 1959, the cinema celebrated its 21st Birthday with a special event. A free souvenir programme was produced with a still from the George Pal movie ‘Tom Thumb’ starring Russ Tamblyn on the cover. A celebratory birthday cake was prepared by master baker H. Victor Reynard of Cross Roads with Lees.

It was rebranded the ABC on 30th July 1971 (Associated British Cinemas Ltd. ran the Ritz cinemas anyway). ABC had established The ABC Minors in the 1940s, one of the first major Saturday cinema clubs for children, and this fondly remembered initiative was introduced in Keighley. It showed its last film as a cinema on 2nd February 1974.

The building was granted a change of use and became a bingo venue in 1974, operating as Ritz Bingo, Gala Bingo and then Buzz Bingo. When Buzz Bingo took over in February 2019, the opening ceremony was carried out by 99 year old Eunice Greenwood who had played bingo at the hall every week since 1974. She celebrated her 100th birthday at the hall in January 2020.

Page from the theatre programme for a production of "Sybil" at the Hippodrome Theatre, Keighley, staged by Keighley Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society in February 1937. This page includes portraits of dramatic poses made by the cast, taken by Keighley-based professional photographer W. Bruce Johnston, and details of the Grand Dance to be held in the Municipal Hall on Tuesday 23rd February 1937.

Keighley Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society's production of "Sybil" played at the Hippodrome Theatre in Keighley for six nights (and a Saturday matinee) from Monday 15th February 1937. The military comic opera was written by Max Brody and Franz Martos, with music by Victor Jacobi and lyrics by Harry Graham and Harry B. Smith. The KAODS production was produced by H. Flockton Foster, with musical director R. Lewis Scargill.

The story is set in pre-Revolutionary Russia. Sybil Renaud (played by Rhoda Heap), a talented vocalist is touring Russia accompanied by impressario Monsieur Charles Poire (W. Lupton Brooks). Lieutenant Paul Petrov of the Imperial Guard (Arthur Day) falls in love with Sybil and deserts his post to be with Sybil as she travels to Bomsk. The Governor of Bomsk (Ernest Marsden) is preparing the town for a visit by the Grand Duke and Duchess Constantine. Sybil is mistaken for the Duchess, an error she plays along with in order to prevent Lieutenant Petrov being punished as a deserter. The Grand Duke (Eric B. Broster) arrives and plays along with the conceit, but when the Grand Duchess (Edith Clarke) finds out what is happening she is less than impressed. The confusion continues until Sybil confesses all and everyone lives happily ever after. As the programme put it: "Add to the above the many smart officers and ladies, in brilliant uniforms and gorgeous costumes, really tuneful music, and delightful scenic effects and dances, and you have in 'Sybil' a general ensemble that will please the eye and, we trust, entrance the senses of those who witness it."

The show also starred Margaret Best, Alan Petty, John Mitchell, Clifford Heap, Fred Gillott, Albert E. Shepherd and Harry Moore.

The 48-page programme was designed and printed by The Keighley Printers Ltd. of High Street, Keighley. It measures approximately 185mm by 250mm. The programme was part of an anonymous donation given in 2022.

The programme (LFSP) is a four-year programme (2014 – 2017), designed to improve the livelihoods and food security of people living in rural areas by kick starting the rural economy.

The United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID), with a total investment of £ 45 million (USD 72 million), targets Zimbabwe’s smallholder farmers with the objective of reducing poverty through increased incomes for smallholder farmers.

The programme will actively address the specific constraints that small-holder farmers - particularly women and youth - face in raising the productivity of their farms and participating in markets.

The combined goal of the programme is to contribute to poverty reduction through increased incomes and improved food security and nutrition.

Programme from the 1977 open day at Haymarket depot in Edinburgh. I was there on th Saturday but being only 4 at the time I can't remember much about it. My dad took some photos. They will be in this album once scanned. Not sure if the colour of the booklet dictates one adult and the other child, and even which is which?

Ashtavadhanam programme organized by Bay Area Telugu Association at Sunnyvale, California. The person in the center, to the left is the Avadhani.

Ashtavadhanam is a very rare Telugu literary feat. In Ashtavadhanam, there are eight Prucchakas, five of whom pose literary challenges to an Avadhani sitting amidst them. "Prucchaka" is someone who asks. The Prucchakas pose challenges, urge the poet to recite poems, subject to certain constraints, placing hurdles all along the way. The Avadhani surmounts these hurdles and recites several poems, conforming to an elaborate and complex set of rules of grammar (known as Chandassu). Avadhani uses only his memory without the aid of pen and paper. The Avadhani, taking the cue from each Prucchaka, recites the first line of each of the poems, returns to the first Prucchaka to start with the second line of each poem and so on till all the poems are recited to completion. Each poem has 4 lines, which means there are 4 rounds in all. The more accomplished the Avadhani, the more beautiful his poem is.

Marwells three Amur tiger cubs have emerged from their den and are delighting guests with their playful antics!

NEWS UPDATE: The votes were counted and we can reveal that the winning name for our male tiger cub was 'Makari'!

Makari, which is a Russian name from Greek origin meaning ‘blessed’, was a clear favourite after receiving 52% of the public votes!

At just thirteen weeks old he is starting to explore his new home with sisters Bailla and Zima under the watchful eye of mum.

The stripey trio were born to mum, ‘Milla’ on 21 May in the privacy of a behind the scenes den. Now the youngsters are fully vaccinated it is safe for them to venture out into their paddock.

Marc Fox, team leader of carnivores said: “We are over the moon that Milla has successfully given birth to three cubs. As it’s 12 years since we had tiger cubs this is particularly great news for Marwell.

Dad, ‘Bagai’ currently lives next door to Milla and the cubs and once they have settled in to their new surroundings keepers will think about housing the family together.

This is Milla and Bagai’s first litter together. Both tigers are part of an important European Endangered species breeding Programme (EEP) which maintains a healthy captive population of tigers and preserves critical genetic diversity for the future.

In the 1940s , the Amur tiger was close to extinction with an estimated population of fewer than 30 individuals remaining in the wild. Decades of turmoil in Russia and formation of the former Soviet Union reportedly contributed to failures to stem uncontrolled persecution.

In 1947 the Soviet Union became the first country to introduce legislation that imposed protection, including banning hunting of tigers. Hunting of the tiger’s main prey species, boar and deer were also limited at this time.

Today, the Amur tiger has full priority species protection in both countries in which it occurs, Russia and China. The population is now estimated to be 360 individuals. However, poaching is still a threat to the species.
