New Hanover County Schools students enjoy a trip at Airlie Gardens on April 3, 2013. Airlie’s Environmental Education (EE) Program provides year-round cultural and environmental learning opportunities for both youth and adults. The EE Program uses inquiry-based learning and experiential, hands-on activities to teach concepts in horticulture, wildlife, soil stewardship, water quality, sustainable development, citizen science, history and more. Education offerings are diverse and range from curriculum correlated field trips to summer camps, from kayak tours to bird hikes.

Delegados de los frentes de apoyo al programa de reforestación "Ovidio Hidalgo Zambrano", mantuvieron hoy lunes 23 de marzo de 2015, una reunión de trabajo con funcionarios municipales en el salón de sesiones "Andrés Delgado Coppiano" del Gobierno Autónomo Descentralizado Municipal (GADM) de Chone.

El programa de reforestación está siendo apoyado por el GAD Municipal a través del área de Producción. La reunión sirvió para realizar una evaluación del trabajo desarrollado. La campaña inició en febrero con la siembra de aproximadamente tres mil árboles en el cerro de la ciudadela "Jorge Gallardo" y una parte de la vía hacia el monumento a Los Raidistas.

Los delegados de las instituciones como: Corfam, Policía Nacional, Cuerpo de Bomberos, Brigadas Barriales, entre otros que participaron de la sesión, calificaron de positivos el trabajo realizado hasta los actuales momentos.

En la reunión quedó establecido iniciar la segunda fase el viernes 27 de marzo, donde se sembrarán cinco mil árboles de todas las especies en las riberas del río Chone, desde el puente de Santa Martha hacia el puente El Olimpo; y desde el redondel del paso lateral de Chone hasta Canuto por ambos costados.

El presidente del Programa de Reforestación "Ovidio Hidalgo", Hugo Andrade, indicó que tienen 13 años trabajando arduamente, pero aún falta mucho por hacer y con el respaldo del municipio lograran cosas importantes en temas de reforestación.

El concejal, Winston Argandoña, quien participó de la reunión como delegado del Alcalde, Deyton Alcívar sugirió seguir trabajando conjuntamente para sembrar más árboles en todo el cantón y proteger las riberas del río Chone.

Canadian geese play "follow the leader". This must have something to do with the migration mindset. Only at this time of the year are they so sensitive to each other's movements. One bird's decision to walk a certain way affects the whole flock. It was rather amusing to watch.
