"Luke, I am your father"

Coal Mine Canyon, Arizona

This image goes with the others being posted to a new set for this canyon in northeast Arizona. I've been researching the geology of this canyon and have been finding interesting information about mapping the geology here. In this image is seen: Entrada Formation, Dakota Sandstone, shale (colored bright red by the burning of layers of coal in some lower areas of the strata) and sedimentary rock from millions of years ago.

Vladimir Nabokov said of Gogol: "When, as in the immortal The Overcoat, he really let himself go and pottered on the brink of his private abyss, he became the greatest artist that Russia has yet produced.” Its a nice short - read it over here if you wish.

This animation - - yes, I did steal images of overcoats from the internet in order to make it … The piece is also a meditation on the role of copying, language-as-object, record-keeping, and technology to a community’s memory. Yeah there may be a wink at the commodification of appearances but you know, the first rule of capitalist materialism is you don’t talk about how it works.

Animation frankensteined together in Adobe AfterEffects from parts created with QT7, Processing, and Quartz Composer. Audio created & mixed in Apple Logic, better with headphones.

although the processing room at the post office in gary, indiana has been stripped of almost all of its equipment, nature continues to thrive regardless of its surroundings. this 12ft tall tree popped up through the wooden blocks (they are not bricks, but wood blocks to support the heavey machinery) along side other plants to give a little life to this abandonded facility.

The Pan-Africa Bean Research Alliance works with the Institut des Siences Agronomique du Burundi (ISABU), to give farmers access to improved beans. The beans have been bred with characteristics like high iron; some yield more produce and some are more resilient to drought. Researchers at ISABU are working with key farmers, to produce more beans. And they are linking producers who are adding value, for example by grinding beans into bean flour, to feed to children as part of a school feeding program to tackle malnutrition with World Vision. www.ciat.cgiar.org or www.pabra-africa.org
