I saw a retina specialist today and I don't have macular degeneration. I may need a procedure if my retina doesn't heal on it's own but I should keep my sight. I've missed you all so much but I have peeked at you photos now and then because I hate to miss seeing any of them.

My Medic Alert bracelet may not be the prettiest piece of jewelry but it is the most valuable piece.

Because I have an implant, certain medical procedures could be life threatening if performed. If I were unconscious this bracelet could potentially save my life.

Engraved on the back of the bracelet is a few of my medical conditions/allergies, my member identification number and the phone number to Medic Alert. When medical personnel or Police/Fire call the phone number on the back they are immediately given my medical history, medications, names of my doctors and my emergency contact.

Anyone that has an allergy or medical condition should use some type of identification. Membership with Medic Alert is very inexpensive and the bracelets/necklaces are very affordable (they have many different styles and colors). The bracelets hold up very well... I rarely take mine off.

I know that MedicAlert.Org is known throughout the United States. I am not sure about other countries.

Procedures and Rules of Debate

Tibetan debates involve two parties: a defender (damchawa), who answers, and a questioner (riklampa). The roles of defender and questioner imply very different commitments, as Daniel Perdue explains: “The defender puts forth assertions for which he is held accountable. The challenger raises qualms to the defender’s assertions and is not subject to reprisal for the questions he raises. The responsibility of the defender is to put forth a true thesis and to defend it. Hence, the defender is accountable for the truth of his assertions. The questioner, on the contrary, is responsible only for the questions he puts forth. His questions must be well-articulated, must logically follow from the points already made, and must be relevant to defeating the defender. Their truth content is irrelevant, however, for his task is not to establish a thesis but to oblige the defender to contradict either previous statements or common sense.

The Avalon Waterways Impression is exiting the Jochenstein Lock on the way to Passau Germany. The bikers were enjoying the lock transit procedure. The Danube is a popular route for cyclists. We passed many on both sides of the river. The Vienna to Passau section is a busy route.

The locks are designed to conserve water, by piping first the top third, and then the middle third of the lock water into side tanks during the down cycle. On the up cycle, these tanks replenish first the bottom third and then the middle third of the lock volume. The remaining top third is supplied by water from the upper level of the canal.

All the locks from Rotterdam, Holland to Budapest are monitored and controlled from 4 monitoring locations and the language of use is German only (except for some minor variation in Holland) for the entire lengthbof the transit from Rotterdam to the Black Sea.

There is a common dental procedure that nearly every dentist will tell you is completely safe, despite the fact that scientists have been warning of its dangers for more than 100 years.

What is this dental procedure?

The root canal.

Root-canaled teeth are essentially “dead” teeth that can become silent incubators for highly toxic anaerobic bacteria that can, under certain conditions, make their way into your bloodstream to cause a number of serious medical conditions—many not appearing until decades later.

Most of these toxic teeth feel and look fine for many years, which make their role in systemic disease even harder to trace back.

Sadly, the vast majority of dentists are oblivious to the serious potential health risks they are exposing their patients to, risks that persist for the rest of their patients’ lives.

The American Dental Association claims root canals have been proven safe, but they have NO published data or actual research to substantiate this claim.

Dr. Weston Price, regarded by many as the greatest dentist of all time, who, more than a century ago, made the connection between root-canaled teeth and disease.

Dr. Price was a dentist and researcher who traveled the world to study the teeth, bones, and diets of native populations living without the “benefit” of modern food. Around the year 1900, Price had been treating persistent root canal infections and became suspicious that root-canaled teeth always remained infected, in spite of treatments. Then one day, he recommended to a woman, wheelchair bound for six years, to have her root canal tooth extracted, even though it appeared to be fine.

She agreed, so he extracted her tooth and then implanted it under the skin of a rabbit. The rabbit amazingly developed the same crippling arthritis as the woman and died from the infection 10 days later. But the woman, now free of the toxic tooth, immediately recovered from her arthritis and could now walk without even the assistance of a cane.

Price discovered that it’s mechanically impossible to sterilize a root-canaled (e.g. root-filled) tooth. He then went on to show that many chronic degenerative diseases originate from root-filled teeth—the most frequent being heart and circulatory diseases. He actually found 16 different causative bacterial agents for these conditions. But there were also strong correlations between root-filled teeth and diseases of the joints, brain and nervous system. Dr. Price went on to write two groundbreaking books in 1922 detailing his research into the link between dental pathology and chronic illness. Unfortunately, his work was deliberately buried for 70 years, until finally one endodontist named George Meinig recognized the importance of Price’s work and sought to explain the truth.

Dr. Meinig, a native of Chicago, was a captain in the U.S. Army during World War II before moving to Hollywood to become a dentist for the stars. He eventually became one of the founding members of the American Association of Endodontists (root canal specialists).

In the 1990s, he spent 18 months immersed in Dr. Price’s research. In June of 1993, Dr. Meinig published the book Root Canal Cover-Up, which continues to be the most comprehensive reference on this topic today.

Your teeth are made of the hardest substances in your body.

In the middle of each tooth is the pulp chamber, a soft living inner structure that houses blood vessels and nerves. Surrounding the pulp chamber is the dentin, which is made of living cells that secrete a hard mineral substance. The outermost and hardest layer of your tooth is the white enamel, which encases the dentin.

The roots of each tooth descend into your jawbone and are held in place by the periodontal ligament. In dental school, dentists are taught that each tooth has one to four major canals. However, there are accessory canals that are never mentioned. Literally miles of them!

Just as your body has large blood vessels that branch down into very small capillaries, each of your teeth has a maze of very tiny tubules that, if stretched out, would extend for three miles. Weston Price identified as many as 75 separate accessory canals in a single central incisor (front tooth). Microscopic organisms regularly move in and around these tubules, like gophers in underground tunnels.

When a dentist performs a root canal, he or she hollows out the tooth, then fills the hollow chamber with a substance (called guttapercha), which cuts off the tooth from its blood supply, so fluid can no longer circulate through the tooth. But the maze of tiny tubules remains. And bacteria, cut off from their food supply, hide out in these tunnels where they are remarkably safe from antibiotics and your own body’s immune defenses.

Under the stresses of oxygen and nutrient deprivation, these formerly friendly organisms morph into stronger, more virulent anaerobes that produce a variety of potent toxins. What were once ordinary, friendly oral bacteria mutate into highly toxic pathogens lurking in the tubules of the dead tooth, just awaiting an opportunity to spread.

No amount of sterilization has been found effective in reaching these tubules—and just about every single root-canaled tooth has been found colonized by these bacteria, especially around the apex and in the periodontal ligament. Oftentimes, the infection extends down into the jawbone where it creates cavitations—areas of necrotic tissue in the jawbone itself.

Cavitations are areas of unhealed bone, often accompanied by pockets of infected tissue and gangrene. Sometimes they form after a tooth extraction (such as a wisdom tooth extraction), but they can also follow a root canal. According to Weston Price Foundation, in the records of 5,000 surgical cavitation cleanings, only two were found healed.

And all of this occurs with few, if any, accompanying symptoms. So you may have an abscessed dead tooth and not know it. This focal infection in the immediate area of the root-canaled tooth is bad enough, but the damage doesn’t stop there.

As long as your immune system remains strong, any bacteria that stray away from the infected tooth are captured and destroyed. But once your immune system is weakened by something like an accident or illness or other trauma, your immune system may be unable to keep the infection in check.

These bacteria can migrate out into surrounding tissues by hitching a ride into your blood stream, where they are transported to new locations to set up camp. The new location can be any organ or gland or tissue.

Dr. Price was able to transfer diseases harbored by humans to rabbits, by implanting fragments of root-canaled teeth, as mentioned above. He found that root canal fragments from a person who had suffered a heart attack, when implanted into a rabbit, would cause a heart attack in the rabbit within a few weeks.

He discovered he could transfer heart disease to the rabbit 100 percent of the time! Other diseases were more than 80 percent transferable by this method. Nearly every chronic degenerative disease has been linked with root canals, including:

Heart disease

Kidney disease

Arthritis, joint, and rheumatic diseases

Neurological diseases (including ALS and MS)

Autoimmune diseases (Lupus and more)

There may also be a cancer connection. Dr. Robert Jones, a researcher of the relationship between root canals and breast cancer, found an extremely high correlation between root canals and breast cancer. He claims to have found the following correlations in a five-year study of 300 breast cancer cases:

93 percent of women with breast cancer had root canals

7 percent had other oral pathology

Tumors, in the majority of cases, occurred on the same side of the body as the root canal(s) or other oral pathology.

Dr. Jones claims that toxins from the bacteria in an infected tooth or jawbone are able to inhibit the proteins that suppress tumor development. A German physician reported similar findings. Dr. Josef Issels reported that, in his 40 years of treating “terminal” cancer patients, 97 percent of his cancer patients had root canals. If these physicians are correct, the cure for cancer may be as simple as having a tooth pulled, then rebuilding your immune system.

time to say goodbye

This image was taken on Wallis Island by Graeme Andrews in 1975. The hulk of Wallis Lake was taken round to the island to protect the jetty owned by the Sointu family. Graeme noted that "this craft is a wooden boat enthusiast’s dream. Much of the exposed timber remains showing grown timbers and adzed wood working". More details in the text below.

Other images relating to the log punts Wallis Lake are in the Album Wallis Lake or Queen?

Information on the log punts that were operated by John Wright and Co. is scant with reports varying. This interpretation should not be relied upon to be completely accurate although provided is quite strong. Despite our reservations, the story reflects a fascinating period in the history of the timber industry of the Great Lakes of NSW.

Early Log Punts

Early sawmillers employed teams to fell trees for logs that were dragged by bullock team from the forest to rivers and lakes. Here they were loaded onto log punts and taken to mills located on the waterfront at Tuncurry and Forster.

The puntmen who delivered logs to the sawmills at Tuncurry had to employ great caution and skill in mooring a fully loaded punt at the mill wharf as the tides moving into and out of Wallis Lake were strong - particularly coming down with the ebbing tide. The procedure was to throw out an anchor on the opposite sand spit, so that the punt swung around and faced upstream.

The first log punt built by John Wright at Tuncurry was the Nil Desperandum - a punt that was handled by man-power alone – typically a puntman using a long pole that he pushed into the mud and walked the length of the punt pushing on the pole.

Subsequently a series of steam powered log punts were built for the Wright sawmilling operation at Tuncurry - these were:

- Queen I (circa 1897) - John Wright - hulk believed to have towed to Wallis Island to be used to protect a wharf

- Queen II (unknown) - John Wright - believed to have sunk

- Wallis Lake (most likely) (1924) - Ernest Wright

- Queen III (1948) - William (Billy) Mann - Nabiac

John Wright constructs the steam punt Queen

Around 1897, at the Wright and McLaren sawmill in Tuncurry, John Wright constructed a much larger, steam powered, paddle-wheeler attached to a steam engine that could drive the punt empty or loaded, regardless of the tide. She was the Queen of the Hawke (later known simply as the Queen). The deckhouse was located at the rear – the two paddle wheels were located each side the deckhouse.

Estimates of size vary – records from the Great Lakes Museum indicate that she was some 30 m long and 6 m wide on the deck. Graeme Andrews, well-known authority on shipping, visited the remains of Queen on Wallis Island in 1975 and estimated the dimensions as 40 m long by 10 or 12 m wide. By any measure she was a large vessel.

Cape Hawke Regattas

The first reference to the Queen was in 1898 when she was used to bring people to the Cape Hawke Regatta on 26th January. “To reach the rendezvous, the steam punts belonging to the various sawmills are brought into requisition. The mill-owners always allow the use of their punts to convey passengers, free of charge. These punts are roomy— not too slow— well provided with awnings and seats, and suit admirably. Mr. Wright's 'Queen,' from Tuncurry; Messrs. Miles, Bros.' 'The Brothers' from Forster; Mr. Fenning's 'Wollomba,' from Wallamba River [Wollomba was the original spelling of Wallamba] ; Mr. J. Breckenridge's 'Wheelbarrow,' from Failford ; and Messrs. Goodlet & Smith's ' Coolongolook,' from the village of the same name, conveyed hundreds of people— all sorts and conditions of men, yes, and women, too— for the ladies of Forster and district take great interest in boating, and lend an additional charm to the great aquatic carnival by their presence in large numbers.”

The Manning River Times and Advocate for the Northern Coast Districts of New South Wales (Taree, NSW : 1898 - 1954) - Sat 5 Feb 1898

It appears that she was initially given the name Queen of the Hawke but commonly this was abbreviated to simply the Queen. Newspaper reports in 1899 reported the Queen taking people from Tuncurry to the famous Cape Hawke Regatta that was held every year around 26th January – Anniversary Day (now Australia Day). An excerpt from the Wingham Chronicle describes the day:

“There must have been upwards of 1500 persons present on the first day, and fully 1000 on the second. The visitors from Forster were brought down in Messrs. J. and T. Miles' steam punt 'The Brothers,' which was captained by Mr. J. Spooner, with Mr. E. Everingham as engineer, while the Tuncurry contingent came by Messrs. J. Wright & C. S. McLaren's steam yacht 'Queen of the Hawke,' which was captained by Mr. D. Brown, Mr. J. Mclnnis, engineer of the mill, taking charge of the engines for the day, Mr. J. Breckenridge's steamer 'Forster' brought down a large number from Failford. It was thought that the Coolongolook friends were to be debarred from being present on this occasion, owing to Messrs. Goodlet & Smith's punt, which had always been generously given by the owners for this purpose, being under repair. However, Mr. J. Breckenridge, J.P., with his usual generosity, stepped into the breach, and very kindly gave the free use of his steam punt 'Wheelbarrow' to bring down the Coolongolook contingent, Mr. J. Priestley had charge of the 'Wheelbarrow", while Mr. C. Basham looked after the engines. Fully 600 were on board the 'Wheelbarrow' on Thursday.”

The Queen performed many tasks other than the transport of logs and sawn timber and participants to the annual Cape Hawke Regatta. In 1901 four vessels helped raise the sunken log punt Wallamba - these were 'The Dart,' the s.s. 'Marian Mayfield,' the s.s. 'Ariel,' and the p.s. 'Queen.'

In 1904 Queen apparently left the shelter of Cape Hawke to travel to Smiths Lake as reported in the Manning Times:

“The fishermen of Cape Hawke are congratulating themselves on having an ice factory in their midst — Mr. Coombes having brought his refrigerating plant and machinery down from Smith's Lake last week in Messrs. Wright and McLaren's steam punt [Queen].”

The Manning River Times and Advocate for the Northern Coast Districts of New South Wales (Taree, NSW : 1898 - 1954) - Sat 7 May 1904

Queen II ? sinks in 1914

It would appear that John Wright had a second log punt built, the Queen II, but no reports have been found. In 1914 it appears that Queen II may have sunk, near Bandicoot Island. “A severe south-easterly gale is raging here. Shipping is delayed. Wright and McLaren's steam punt, while crossing Wallace [Wallis] Lake yesterday, was caught by the gale and sunk, the crew escaping in a boat. The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 - 1954) - Fri 19 Jun 1914

This is corroborated by the original report by Graeme Andrews that was omitted in the AFLOAT article of 2012.

"The run from Pacific Palms to Forster is about 17 km and gives some idea of the size of the Wallis Lake. The lake is long enough and wide enough to build up big seas and, as it is never very deep - but enough for any boat likely to use it - the wind can build up steep seas very quickly.

As an example, about 1920, one of the paddle droghers "S.S Queen" was overwhelmed by the seas on the lake. Despite the efforts of her crew, short, small waves breaking over the flat deck gradually filled the craft, she sank and her superstructure stood above the surface for many years. Now the remains are just below the surface and are marked by only a small stick." (Australian Seacraft 1977).

In September 1924 a new log punt was launched, most likely the Wallis Lake - built by Ernest Wright. The original Queen (Queen I) was used less frequently and, after the launch of the Queen III in 1948, was probably withdrawn from service and tied up to shore at the southern end of Graham Barclay's oyster wharf. Here she sat, gradually decaying, with steam engine and paddles removed until around 1960.

Enter Ida Niemi

In steps Ida Niemi – member of a Finnish family who settled on Wallis Island in the late 1940’s. “When Ida heard one day, that they were sinking big droghers, she rowed over to Forster, saw the boss who owned the sawmill, and said she wanted a punt sunk near her wharf, to act as a barrier from bad weather. He agreed to do this provided she paid for it, so that he would not be liable for any damage that may be caused. He offered her the other “Queen” [Queen I], and a price of two shillings was agreed. The drogher was brought around and sunk, and its remains can be seen today.”

Tea and Scones on Lake Wallis

In 1975 Graeme Andrews and his wife Winsome took a trip on the Lake Wallis and stopped to look at the sunken hulk of the Queen that had been used to protect the Sointu’s wharf from damage. Graeme’s article published AFLOAT in 2012 noted:

“On the south-western end of Wallis Island is a grand and remarkable two-storey house. It is obviously old and apparently houses a Finnish family who have crops, cattle and the obligatory sauna. Their ‘wharf’ consists of the remains of the steam paddle lighter, or ‘drogher’ Queen. About 40 m long by 10 or 12 m wide, this craft is a wooden boat enthusiast’s dream. Much of the exposed timber remains showing grown timbers and adzed wood working. Stores and monies change hands and off we go again.”

So the Queen, built by John Wright around 1897, lives on 120 years after she was built – a testimony to the work of John Wright and to the quality of the Australian hardwood timbers used.

What you're looking at is the thoracic region of my spine. Inserted into the right side of T4, T5, and T6 are wires for a radio frequency ablation (RFA). This was done to burn the nerves in this region to reduce the pain I experience.

This area of the back is between the shoulder blades. And yes, this is an odd location for back pain.

I've had several RFAs done, bilaterally, at this and other spinal locations. I'm now a week out from this procedure, and I can report a big improvement in my daily life.

Amazing eating procedure for these Great Blue Herons! Somehow they manage to "nibble" away on the fish while it is half way into the beak. About half of the original is now left about 40 minutes after the catch.

Shot this selfie last evening, the 24th. No, I was not on any drugs for pain. I‘ve had just about no pain from this procedure. For members of Flickr-at-home, this was my second procedure and overnight hospital stay in a month. One more, a biggie, coming up in October. When i am not home I am at Kaiser-Permanente or St. Joseph’s Hospital here in the Atlanta area.

Those who do have full understanding towards the filing procedure could proceed with the filing on their own. However, we recommend the involvement of an expert, in cases where there is a lack of understanding and know-how. Today, we have plenty of good lawyers available. Hiring and involving of a legal expert can prevent you from falling short.

Same procedure as every year (yay!) - this weekend I had the joyful honor to attend the Cologne fashion doll collectors' convention : )!

It was a fantastic day, I met with old and dear friends and got to know a whole bunch of lovely new people. My funniest moment was when a very kind french lady and her daughter came to my table and my french skills left me within a second. I could only excuse myself (in french at least!) with a laughing "I DO speak french, but not at this moment" - obviously *rotf* ; )

Ah, it was great! My photos surely aren't the best, they're usually taken in a hurry and only at the beginning of the day, since I'm becoming very busy afterwards, but at least I really did take some :).

To all of you who are going to attend the IT convention soon - I'm wishing you tons of fun, have many, many great moments, meet old and new friends and enjoy every minute. In my heart I'll be with you *hugs*!

Bird Island | Seychelles

Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata)

Following on from my previous comments about this species.

As part of Bird Island’s ongoing conservation programme, as many Hawksbill Turtles as possible are measured and tagged after laying – a procedure that my wife Tris and I have been privileged to share on many an occasion. We have also encountered a number of turtles laying when we have been on our own and, consequently, have been responsible for obtaining the tag numbers. There is usually a tag on each front flipper so, in theory, it’s just a simple case of recording the numbers, but sometimes this is easier than others. Although the process of coming out of the sea, up the beach to find a suitable nesting site, digging, laying and the covering up phase can take over two hours, there is a sudden sense of urgency when the job is done and all they want to do is get back to the sea as quickly as possible! For this reason, the best time to approach them to take their tag numbers is during the covering-up process. Normally you can just rub your fingers over the metal tags to remove any sand deposits so that you can read the numbers. Sometimes though this isn’t possible due to their position, particularly if they’ve made their way under bushes to lay, so you have to wait until they’re out in the open and ready to head back down the beach. It’s then a case of just holding her for a few seconds so that the tag numbers can be read. I’ve been shown how to hold them properly so I know what I’m doing, but to actually restrain them is far more difficult than you’d think, because, although relatively small as far as turtles go, they are remarkably strong creatures. I remember one of the very first times I had to do this when the turtle was near the sea - I thought I was going to be pulled in after her. I had visions of ending up on a beach on another island!

Whilst respecting their situation at all times, you can also approach a turtle when they are laying. However, if you’re walking around the beach and see a turtle in the shallows looking for a suitable spot to come in, or one that is already on the beach in the process of finding a nesting site and/or starting to dig, then it is essential to keep your distance. If a turtle is disturbed before laying, or doesn’t like the beach area she’s chosen, she will simply return to the sea to come up another time. The evidence of this is often seen when you find tracks in the sand that show one has come out and back in again without laying. Sometimes these tracks are short, but other times, particularly at the remote north end of the island, they can extend over distances exceeding 150m or more.

They lay up to 200 eggs at a time, so hatchings can be large and quite exciting to watch for those that are fortunate to witness. Whilst Hawksbills are protected, they still have to ensure that their chosen nest site is in a safe location well above the high-tide line to guard against crab predation. But, at the same time, hatchlings need to be given a fighting chance of reaching the sea alive before being attacked by crabs or picked off by gulls or frigatebirds, which means that they don’t really want to nest further from the sea than necessary.

To walk round Bird Island and spot a turtle coming in to lay is a very special experience.

NB. please have a look at some of the other photos in my 'Turtles' album.

Frans, your curiosity about how a vesicle is everted intrigued me so I created this 'poor' video for you. It is short enough to study the procedure. I appears to me that the apical part 'is' drawn in telescopically rather than stretching. In this video the springtail demonstrated this by curling the end. Also, I noted that in some of my videos, there is a clear pause after the apical part is drawn into the basal part. How the basal part is retracted is not clear to me.

Please mute the video... Then play the video and you can grab the dot at the end and slide it back it back and forth to watch the procedure.

This journal belonging to Joseph Swan is from the Swan Collection of Tyne & Wear Museums, held at the Discovery Museum in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Sir Joseph Wilson Swan was a British Physicist, Chemist and Inventor. Swan lived at Underhill, on Kells Lane North in Low Fell, Gateshead. It was here that he conducted most of his experiments in the large conservatory.

His investigations in electro-chemistry led to the construction of a motor electric meter, an electric fire-damp detector, a miners' electric safety lamp. Most importantly, Swan was also a pioneer in photographic procedures such as carbon printing.

It was Swan's demonstration of the light bulb at a lecture in Newcastle upon Tyne on 18 December 1878, before its later development by the American Thomas Edison that he is most famous for. Swan and Edison later collaborated in their work with the incandescent light bulb in 1883, when they founded the Edison & Swan United Electric Light Company, otherwise known as 'Ediswan.'

Many items held at Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums relating to Joseph Swan offer an amazing insight in to his work as an inventor and his place in the History of Scientific progression. This set offers a small selection from these collections.

This set has been produced in support of the British Science Festival 2013, held in Newcastle upon Tyne. You can find more information on the Festival here

Utterly entranced by the whole procedure to craft each cocktail. From roasting herbs to charring bits of banana to crushing berries. Every step was just brilliant.

Been out of commission lately folks,..I know how much y'all missed your Captain... you can calm down now,..I'm still on THIS side of the firmament!!

Well, in June I was diagnosed with severe spinal stenosis of the cervical spine (namely C3 thru C5) which came with numbness in the arms and hands, right down to the fingers, and weakness in the upper body area..muscle atrophy and nerve damage..but curiously NO PAIN,..at all.. subsequently they had to remove my discs and insert these titanium "cages" (as they're called) bound by titanium plates and screws..(its called an ACDF procedure and they go in through the front of the throat) because the degenerating discs(or what was left of them) were pushing IN on my spinal cord in more than one level.. it really sucked too,.. but Nurse Creepella was on call to see that I was well taken care of and didn't miss a dose of my meds, or lift anything over 10 pounds, which precluded me from picking Gomez up, because he is almost 16 pounds now..LOL!!

4 weeks later and I'm back to work and regular activities..

Doc says that there's a 50% chance that levels C6 thru C8 will have to be done as well.. We'll see.. lost a tremendous amount of muscle tissue in my shoulders and my arms due to nerve damage.. all caused by a car wreck I had 20 years ago and is now returning to haunt me,..

But I'm in good hands thanx to my "live-in" Nurse Creepella, and my gifted neurosurgeon,.. ;)
