“My recollection of a hundred lovely lakes has given me blessed release from care and worry and the troubled thinking of our modern day. It has been a return to the primitive and the peaceful.”
— Hamlin Garland

This desert spiny lizard caught many people's attention at the Phoenix Desert Botanical Garden. To guess, I'd say he was about 10 inches (~25cm) from nose to tip of tail. Noticeable. I love the colors some of them get on the belly.

SLOWLY TO MAKE COMMENTS MY FRIEND!! SORRY!!!!II ´M BUSY
The return leg of our day hike in Devil's Garden is more rugged and less populated than the "formal" trail. One must scramble up smooth sandstone walls, over logs, through deep sand and narrow places. This route offers a lot of variety for exploring and photography. I have hiked this trail from both directions and each has its merit. Do it, if you get the chance!

Thanks for views, comments and favs :)
There's a primitive structure perched atop one of the peaks we hiked today. Taken for Studio 26 Architecture assignment. I chose this for my final submission as I actually managed to have Jasper in the shot where he looked like a reasonably integral part of the composition.
Photographed the Arrestra (Primitive Mill) at the Porcupine Historical Park located in the Town of Porcupine in the Township of Whitney in the City of Timmins in Northeastern Ontario Canada
This Arrestra was found near the old Buffalo-Ankerite Mine site and moved to the park in the 1950's.
An arrastra (or arastra) is a primitive mill for grinding and pulverizing (typically) gold or silver ore. Its simplest form is two or more flat-bottomed drag stones placed in a circular pit paved with flat stones, and connected to a center post by a long arm. With a horse, mule or human providing power at the other end of the arm, the stones were dragged slowly around in a circle, crushing the ore. Some arrastras were powered by a water wheel; a few were powered by steam or gasoline engines, and even electricity

This church is dedicated to Saint Maur (patron saint of charcoal burners) and was built between the 14th and 16th centuries.
Its construction, on the ruins of a first church, began in 1301, by the inhabitants who hired the services of architects and master craftsmen of all trades. Everyone pitches in, including the children. Special taxes with donations of money, real estate, annuities helped finance the work. There are 88 large legacies without counting the multitude of services and days of work provided by the little people so great was the Faith at that time. The church was opened for worship 43 years after the start of its construction and will undergo many transformations.
At the entrance is a remarkable tympanum which dates from the primitive church; sculpted tympanum dating from the second half of the 12th century. It represents the second Parousia of Christ (appearance of Christ) just before the Last Judgment, the imminence of which is due to the presence of 2 angels sounding the trumpet and by the resurrected who lift the lid of their tomb.
Once the tympanum is crossed, the Gothic central nave opens with a distribution of 4 dedicated chapels on the left and on the right; this very colorful set completely renovated identically.

This is when the road gets a little more difficult when you turn off the byway and head to the Deadman Canyon.

Mayhew Lodge, constructed of hand-smoothed logs and adorned with a towering rock chimney, was a rustic retreat attracting politicians and movie stars. But this grand loge has primitive beginnings.
In the early 1870s, when there was no road or electricity and grizzly bears still roamed Oak Creek Canyon, a hunter known as Bear Howard built the first cabin on the site. Howard earned his name after a friend was mauled to death, an event that prompted Bear Howard to hunt and kill every grizzly in the canyon, and according to local legend, sometimes with only a knife.
Ten years after Bear Howard built the original cabin, the Thomas family enlarged the cabin and planted apple orchards. Over time other families homesteaded at the site.
Western writer Zane Grey’s travels through the canyon inspired his novel, “Call of the Canyon”. In 1923, Flagstaff photographer Carl Mayhew came to the site to work on a film of Grey’s novel. Mayhew purchased the property, added on to the existing cabin, and opened Mayhew Lodge to guests in 1926. The Mayhew family operated the lodge through 1968. Mayhew’s canyon resort gained national and international fame and catered to many notable guests including president Herbert Hoover, Jimmy Stewart, and Walt Disney. Another famous guest, Clark Gable, even celebrated an anniversary at the lodge.
