Here's a story about my mother (and I hope she forgives me for telling it). She heard once on TV that the safest place for something in a house fire is inside the oven, because an oven is insulated to keep the heat in and so it's pretty good at keeping the fire out. If you wanted to salvage something in a house fire -- like say, important financial documents or a family heirloom -- sticking it inside the oven might just work. (I should note: I have no idea if this is true. Do not try this at home.) So one year, before leaving on vacation, my mother put her wedding photo album inside the oven... just in case the house burned down while she was away.

As these things happen, she and my dad returned home from vacation happy but exhausted from the trip, and decided to order pizza for dinner so they wouldn't have to cook. They turned the oven to preheat so they could keep the pizza warm once it arrived. Soon, the whole kitchen smelled of scorched paper. My dad threw open the oven door to discover the wedding album sitting there on the rack, just starting to crinkle and brown around the edges. Luckily, he pulled it out in time (accompanied by much confused shouting and cursing, I imagine), and none of the photos were lost.

Not only does this story capture something exquisitely true about my mother -- her attachment to photographs and mementos of special occasions, her quirky way of problem-solving, her anxiety about fire -- but it seems to me to be deeply human. It's a story about the irony of memory itself. We want to remember things from long ago, but sometimes in trying to salvage those memories we can become distracted and forgetful in the present moment. We might take all the precautions in the world to preserve the past, but nothing can slow the passage of time and the forgetfulness that comes with age.

Pagans like to say, "What is remembered, lives." Memory is re-membering, the act of giving life to the past through rituals of witness. A photograph by itself is not a memory, only a record. Collecting dust in a drawer, it does nothing for anyone. Only when it is brought into the light of the present moment can it become something -- a reawakening of mindfulness, a memory stirred to life -- or perhaps only ever a reimagining, each time slightly different, each time new. But that's life, too, isn't it?

I'm like my mother in my desire to remember the past, I just go about it differently. Instead of sticking my wedding album in the oven, I tell stories. (And share them on the internet, where everything is forever and yet nothing lasts.) But we both face the same irony -- that the act of remembering is the very act by which we might accidentally ruin or replace the past we seek to honor.

I don't even know if this story about my mom is true, at least in all its detail. I only heard it second-hand. But it feels true, it feels like her. It reminds me of her and the things about her that I love and learn from. It almost doesn't matter if the story is "factually" true or not. Like life itself, it's more complicated than that.

www.flickr.com/photos/stealaway/54271473379/in/dateposted...

gigazine.net/news/20250104-apple-ceo-tim-cook-donates-1-m...

Title:

"A.I. About Apple's Identity"

www.flickr.com/photos/stealaway/54271473379/in/dateposted...

Will Apple Listen to Mark Zuckerberg’s Criticism?

I don’t think so. Not after Apple Vision Pro showed me what dreams look like.

Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, appeared on a famous podcast and criticized Apple, claiming that the company hasn’t released an innovative product since the iPhone and that its sales are declining.

It may sound like a lighthearted joke to criticize Apple on a podcast, but I believe he was serious. After all, he now has AR glasses in his arsenal.

It’s likely that a network of capable institutions and talented staff have supported him in achieving a reasonable set of goals. However, as a longtime Apple fan who has been using their products since the PowerBook 540c, I can’t sense any identity as a creator from him.

The same applies to other dominant IT companies today: Meta, Amazon, Tesla, Microsoft, and Google.

Just seeing their names likely brings faces to mind for anyone reading this text.

In the past, I wrote that Steve Jobs was not an artist.

He had a knack for weaving together scattered images from the world, expanding them, and linking them to the future. That was his strength.

It was Jonathan Ive who actually created. There may be others like me who share this minority view.

Still, when I see these IT giants reversing their company policies the moment Trump regains power, I feel compelled to say this:

The AR glasses, cars, and other products they create lack a crucial element: a core concept. You could call it a philosophy or, more lightly, an identity.

Indeed, Tim Cook and the current Apple staff have become more prone to leaking information about unreleased products.

As I’ve written before, I love music.

Musicians isolate themselves in studios, pouring their anger, hatred, joy, and sorrow into every note, as if entrusting something to it.

Then they release their completed album, sharing the thoughts and emotions that went into its creation. (Prince, one of my favorites, rarely spoke about his work, leaving it to the audience to understand.)

Artists don’t say a word until their album is finished and released.

Those are the kind of creators who move me deeply.

The faint light of innovation in Apple still glows within me.

Even the Apple Vision Pro, which was criticized as a massive failure last year, couldn’t extinguish it. In fact, it radiates a more intense light than the iPhone ever did.

It’s not just a novel electronic gadget; it conveys a sense of philosophy and vision beyond its intricate components.

Unfortunately, I don’t think I will ever feel such a philosophy or vision from Meta’s AR glasses or Tesla’s cars.

This has been a long discussion, but my conclusion ties back to the following article:

Tim Cook Donates Over $1.5 Million to Trump’s Inauguration

gigazine.net/news/20250104-apple-ceo-tim-cook-donates-1-m...

At first glance, it may seem like Tim Cook has sold his soul to Trump, just like other IT companies. But that’s not the case.

While Cook made a personal donation to Trump, Apple as a company refrained from making similar contributions.

Apple did not bow to Trump.

If you were to ask me what Apple’s philosophy or vision is, I would say this:

Apple is a group of people who believe in themselves.

Steve Jobs, watching from heaven, is probably smirking at this overly serious text of mine.

“A company that doesn’t bow to Trump—that’s Apple,” he’d say. :)

After reading an uplifting article.

Main story

There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.

One to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.

The other to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days staring at the shine

quietly.

Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.

I face myself to change tomorrow a vague day into something certain.

That is the meaning of a rebirth.

I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.

After she left I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After

she left # how many times did I depend too much on her # doubt her # envy her and keep on telling lies

until I realized it is love?

I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the

daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.

I had been thinking about such a thing.

However I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see

something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous unstable

tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.

Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

I love my present.

What I lived until now, it's mine. It's me.

I didn't love what I was, but now I do. And I think this is the beginning of something called freedom.

I fight less and less against myself. Anyway, I never won ;)

Oh, if you understand a little my language (french) please have a look on this article about my work!! :)

iPad Artwork - www.adrianogaleno.com

Sometimes, I'm not sure what, and don't even know why, I'm doing this... but, there is something inside of me that yells "create and share... and don't worry because it will make sense in the end, just keep doing it"... and that is why I decided to name this voice "Present".

China, Harbin, St. Sofia Orthodox Church, build in 1907 in a Russian Architectonic Style is a former Russian Orthodox church, since 1997 the Building is hosting an Architectonic Museum, displaying nearly a thousand pictures & a sandbox of Harbin urban planning, reflecting Harbin's past, present & future.

The Neo-Byzantine building of the 53.3 mtr tall Church occupies an area of 721 square mtr & is the largest Orthodox Church building in the Far East, constructed for Russians & other Orthodox people living in & around Harbin. Though the building’s interior was damaged after the revolution, it is still beautiful.

Harbin doesn’t have a long history as a city unlike most other Chinese cities. The Japanese defeated the Russians during a war in 1905 & the Russian 4 Army Division arrived in the region.

A wooden building called St. Sophia Church was built at the site & it was finished in 1907. Then construction on the existing solid structure began in 1923 & finished 9 years later in 1932.

The city owes its origin to the construction of the Chinese Eastern Railway through Northeast China Manchuria by the Russians at the end of the 19th, beginning of the 20th century. Before 1896 it was a small fishing village named "Alejin" meaning Honour; Harbin is derived from it. Thereafter it became the construction centre for the railway, which by 1904 linked the Trans-Siberian Railroad from a point east of Lake Baikal in Siberia with the Russian port of Vladivostok on the East Sea of Japan.

Harbin plays a vital role in communications between South & North Asia as well the regions of Europe & the Pacific Ocean. At the end of the 19th century, more than 160,000 foreigners from 33 countries migrated to Harbin, promoting the development of a capitalist economy in the city. The economy & culture of Harbin achieved unprecedented prosperity at that time, the city gradually grew into a famous international commercial port. Assimilating external culture, Harbin created its unique & exotic cityscape. The majestic St. Sophia Orthodox Church & Zhongyang Dajie each built in a Russian/European style.

Besides these rich cultural heritages, Harbin is favoured with beautiful natural scenery. Based on meandering Song Hua River & subject to severe low temperatures in winter, done to -30° to -40°C below freezing piont, when I took this Pictures the Temperature varied between -20°C & -26°C but dry, Harbin boasts a unique ice and snow culture. So, Harbin is also called the 'Ice City'.

Harbin was the birthplace of Jin, 1115-1234 & Qing,1644-1911 Dynasties, the latter of which had a very considerable influence on modern Chinese history.

Presented are several series of images from a large group of photographs and derived art taken in Atlanta, Georgia. All were taken in the Downtown area, all within several blocks of Centennial Olympic Park. The subject of most of these photographs is cityscapes and architecture, especially the sculptural and geometrical aspects of this civic art.

This set shows the art and architecture of the Sun Trust Plaza. SunTrust Plaza is a 60-story skyscraper (869 ft, 265 m), built by prominent American architect and developer John C. Portman, finished in 1992. It is the second-tallest building in Atlanta.

The Sun Trust Plaza is adorned with a variety of architectural embellishments and with large architecture scale sculptures. Examples are shown here.

(1) Image 01a shows the patios, pools, and lattice eaves around the base of the tower building. Because these structures are so strongly graphical and geometrical, they can be divorced from their real world origins and still be interesting as abstract art, as seen in view 01b which turns the image on its side.

(2) Image 02a shows a statue on an outer patio. This work is "Sleeping Woman III", by sculptor Olivier Strebelle, made in 1974. It is seen in front of a portico of the main tower building. Image 02b is an art variation that fades the background to emphasize the polished bronze on its pedestal.

(3) Image 03 is a closeup of another statue positioned at the base of the tower, its pedestal arising from a pool of water. Named "Early Mace", it was made by sculptor Charles Perry in 1971. Made solely of regularly spaced and gently curving steel rods, the facets of the statue appear to intersect each other to create Bézier and Moiré patterns. Seen here against the granite façade of the tower, the multiple colors of the metal are reflections of the sky, the tower, and other objects surrounding the site. Image 03a is a wider view that shows the ribs plus an edge of the statue. By zooming in to show just the intersecting ribs, Image 03b eliminates all references to space, orientation, or outer context. This thoroughly abstracts the scene, meaning that it can be turned to any orientation and still be an esthetic or believable image - you can flip it right, left, upside down, or any other orientation to suit your vision.

(4) Image 04 shows the statue "The Rites of Spring" by sculptor Elbert Weinberg, erected in 1992. Four views are presented (04b is a crop of 04a; 04c & 04d are independent photographs). The four views were selected to showcase the background elements as much as the statue up front. Both of the buildings behind of cultural and historical significance.

[1] In the midground are the west towers of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (at the corner of Peachtree St and Peachtree Center Ave). This Catholic congregation was founded as in Atlanta in 1880. In 1897, they commissioned a new church building to be designed by prominent southern architect W. T. Downing. Designed in the Romanesque revival style that was popular in turn of the century architecture, the exterior was made of pressed brick and terra cotta, seen in this image in the church’s two bright towers. This basilica plan building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 13, 1976, in recognition of its "artistically significant architecture". In 2010, the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was elevated by the Vatican to status of a minor basilica.

[2] In the background is the Imperial Hotel. Designed by architect Edward Dougherty, it was constructed 1910-1911. It is a first generation skyscraper, built of reinforced concrete, 8 stories tall. As seen in these images, it was built in the Chicago style, surfaced with red brick and terracotta, and adorned with bay windows. It was built to support Atlanta’s booming growth in the early 20th century, providing affordable lodging for the business, convention, and tourist trades. Prior to World War II, it was considered one of Atlanta’s leading hotels, notable for amenities such as private baths. It went through various alterations at mid century, and it was vacated in the early 1980’s. A rehabilitation program beginning 1996 refurbished it as low income housing. Its importance to Atlanta and local architectural history is reflected in its listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. It still has its early and historically significant Otis elevators with all of their original equipment. More information is at these links:

Class 31 number D5633 shunting at Fakenham on 6th September 1971 with the pick up freight. The train is seen at the south throat of Fakenham yard with two gran hoppers and a couple of mineral wagons. On the former mainline stand some vanfits. Image copyright GRM/Andy Wallis collection.

Today, a housing estate has completely obliterated the site of the station. To truly replicate the original photographer's camera angle today, would have required me to be inside the conifer hedge to the left, so I've used a small amount of artistic license. The route of the railway can be picked up at the south end, where the embankment begins and runs south. It is accessible for about 600m as a permissive footpath. The only surviving part of the railway is a large concrete post from the level crossing, which was transplanted into the hedge within the estate (to confuse the unwary in the future) and originally came from the north side of the level crossing. It once had a gate fitted, but the is has since rotted away and been removed.

D5633 became 31209 under TOPS and was scrapped in 2003.

It was the photographing of this bus which nearly ended my relationship with the newly acquire girlfriend, who became Mrs 'R' before it had even got underway!

'Berresfordsmotors' and I, at a loose end, had gone out for a quick trip to Sheffield, on the promise of being back early enough to be present at said girlfriend's eighteenth birthday party and to photograph her cake.

Whilst walking around the city, we glanced over our shoulders to be greeted by the site of a Plaxton Elite coming towards us. Oh, another Leopard or Reliance we thought and continued perusing the service buses. When the Coach passed us, it became very clear from the sound effects that it was a Roadliner. Giving chase on foot we followed it back to this, I suppose, long gone derelict factory complex where the bus was garaged just outside the town centre. The owner of Ex Black & White Motorways RDG 309G was most accommodating and hospitable and we passed quite some time in his company taking several pictures.

Back now to my original comment, we were late back, and when I came to wind the camera on to take the pictures of the birthday cake... there was no more film : Oh, that face!

RDG 309G was a Daimler Roadliner SRP8, new in 1969, and in common with the rest of her type saw only limited service with the original owner. Because of their relative youthfulness, they were snapped up by many an independent as a low cost 'modern' coach. Later in it's life, it moved to Dragon Coachways of Stocksbridge After that, I've no idea what became of this tidy Daimler.

...accidentally looks like a big present!

The crown jewels

For those who doubted if she really owns a crown. Yes she does!

My long-time awaited Princess of Sudafrica Barbie. The hubby prepared a surprise party/dinner with some friends on Saturday, just before leaving for a ski holiday. He had to buy a dolly gift if he wanted I let him go !!!!!
