The cadet cadre for the first phase of Cadet Basic Training are currently engaged in a series of training events in preparation of receiving more than 1,200 cadet candidates on Reception Day, June 27. This Leader Training Program will ensure the cadet cadre is ready to take on the responsibilities of trainers for the new cadet candidates. The cadets split into company formations on the morning of June 14 for a 3.2 ruck march throughout West Point. A group of core networking volunteers and friends from past events (like What the Hack 2005, Hacking at Random 2009, Chaos Communication Camp 2011, Observe. Hack. Make 2013) needed to make alterations to a few kilometers of fiber optic cable to be ready for upcoming events such as Chaos Communication Camp 2015, Campzone 2015 and SHA2017.
This turned into a fusion splicing (fiber splicing) workshop.
Six nations prepare for major Helmand operation
15,000 troops are set to launch major assaults on Taliban strongholds in Helmand.
At Camp Bastion the six nations involved in Operation Moshtarak are conducting battle preparations. Other troops are carrying out "shaping operations" which have been going on for a number of weeks in Nad Ali district.
Alongside the British troops are soldiers from Afghanistan, Canada, the United States, France and Estonia. The operation has been planned to remove insurgents from areas of central Helmand not previously cleared by ISAF troops.
NATO commanders intend to turn the tide this year on the insurgency.
Lieutenant General Nick Parker, the British ISAF Deputy Commander in Afghanistan, said that Op Moshtarak was the first part of a three-stage plan to increase security in the country.
He said that after the insurgency in the south had been subdued British forces would move to building capacity in the Afghan National Security Forces and that this would likely become the main effort later in the year.
The third stage will be transition and the reintegration of insurgents and sympathisers into Afghan society through an Afghan-led reintegration policy.

My friend Jason, the man behind the vines at Mettler Family Vineyards, prepares his equipment for the day's catch.
The Durham Regional Police Marine Unit has the most difficult challenge of any police marine unit in the Greater Toronto Area. Durham Region is bordered by three large bodies of water: Lake Ontario to the south, Lake Simcoe on the northwest and Lake Scugog on the northeast. As well, there are dozens of rivers that traverse Durham Region, several kettle lakes on the Oak Ridges Moraine and numerous private ponds, storm water management ponds and water reservoirs.
The shorelines of these lakes are popular spots for cottagers and recreational visitors. Patrolling such extensive waterways to investigate accidents, perform rescue operations and to enforce safe boating practices requires officers who are skilled in watercraft operations and marine rescue.
The Marine Unit is specially trained to perform search and recovery operations on these bodies of water.
