The preform has now had the pavilion roughed in with the 180-grit lap and the shape of the stone and general pattern of the facets is becoming apparent. Next up will be further shaping of the facets, including some addition/changes of facets with a 500-grit lap, then several polishing stages before moving the crown and table of the stone.
This may be the most famous soapstone bowl boulder in Georgia. There are two beautiful preform bowls that were nearly completed. This boulder was originally from Soapstone Ridge in southern DeKalb County but was moved to the north side of the historic DeKalb County Courthouse. On April 3rd 10 year old Connor V______ died. It took 4 days for him to die. It started with an infection, that caused a fever. That led to chest pains and bad circulation which eventually turned his feet black. The doctors had to induce a coma to keep him alive because he had no brain activity. Relying on machines and tubes to preform normal bodily functions...but it's hard to think of that as human. It was like her was a shell of him self.
9 seems like a completely insignificant number when you think of it. But i have been to 9 funerals, all of people i loved, which makes 9 VERY significant. But never before have i ever been to a little kid funeral. I can only imagine what his parents are going through, and his older brother Dillon.
I've known Connor and Dillon for about 10 years now. When Connor was just a new born and his family had just moved in to the house across the street from me. I loved going over there and playing with Dillon who was closer to my age. We would play Teen Titans and house. In the summer all the neighborhood kids would go with Connor and his family to the lake to go tubing on the boat. These two little boys were probably the best part of my childhood, growing up in south Minneapolis. I baby sat them at least once a week, it was a great job, i loved them- and they loved me. But as i grew up, went to high school, i became to old to go out and play. I would instead stay in my room on the computer or go to the mall with my friends or boyfriend. I regret this. I feel if i had stuck around just a few more years we would all be just as close as we were back then. It's hard to believe Connor was in 5th grade...and Dillon in middle school! When it seems just yesterday 3 year old Connor would come knock on my door and ask to come over to play.
I loved their family immensely, unconditionally.
They were the kind of people who did nice things, not for recognition, but simply for the sake of being righteous. They would never except praise.
The year my mom lost her job (i was about 9 i believe) we were struggling to pay the bills- let alone put food on the table. Connor and Dillons family brought us groceries. When my mom had her knee surgery, they helped me mow the lawn and shovel snow in the winter. And when our water got shut off, they let me come stay with them. It is this kind of Apostleship that is hard to ignore. Which is why it is SO difficult to understand God's plan. Why he took Connor from us- so soon. But we are only human, and we must understand our place and learn to not question God and his divine plan.
I feel like I'm always going to be waiting for Connor to come and knock on my door again, asking me to come over to play...but he never will again
This picture perfectly depicts the spirit of Connor! He was always wrestling, it never mattered how big the other person was, Connor would take on any one. Which made him a great football player. He was fearless, wild, energetic and loving. If Christ is the spark inside us all, He must have been a fire work in Connor.

Like most isolated petroglyph rocks in Georgia, Sprayberry Rock is not in-situ. It was moved a hundred feet or so to accommodate a new bank building, in 1984.
There are three prehistoric feature types on the rock. Only one of these features can be associated with a time period. During the Late-Archaic Period (5,000-3,000 years B.P), steatite or soapstone outcrops were quarried to produce bowls and other vessels. Soapstone bowls were traded all over the eastern and mid-western U.S. In Georgia, the bowls were often carved with tools fashioned from diabase (a very hard volcanic rock from instusive dikes found from Atlanta eastward). There are at least seven soapstone bowl preforms or bowl scars ( where a bowl was actually made and removed) on the rock. One preform was in the later stages of completion when abandoned.
The last two prehistoric features can't necessarily be associated with the Late-Archaic Period. Cupules are a poorly understood feature. In some cases they appear to have a utilitarian purpose and are often referred to as nutting holes. In other cases one to several hundred cupules were placed on isolated rocks or outcrops and appear to have no apparent function. Seldom are they arranged in a recognizable pattern. Cupules that appear to have a utilitarian purpose are often on outcrops near streams. It is thought they were used in the processing of nuts and acorns. This activity probably occurred from the Archaic and well into the Woodland Peroid, and possibly later. In come cases, cupules are considered an art form. There are over a dozen cupules on Sprayberry Rock. Their meaning or use is unknown.
The third type of prehistoric feature on Sprayberry Rock is petroglyphs. This is considered an art from. There are at least three images of concentric circles concentrated on one end of the boulder. There are various interpretations on the meaning of concentric circles. It is impossible to determine at which point these circles are produced. If they are associated with the bowl quarrying they are quite old. Concentric circles appear on other isolated petroglyph rocks in Georgia.
I have never seen an archaeological report on Sprayberry Rock. I have no idea if artifacts were recovered before it was moved. For more information: www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/articles/history-archaeology/...
