I love to watch the Warbling Vireos.....their cheerful songs accompany me all day. This one was getting itself in order for the day. My solution is a hat...since being out in the field at dawn leaves me little time for "preening" :)

Another pic of this wonderfully colorful macaw .. ... here preening; March 2011

After a morning threatening geese, this male decided to have a tidy up.

Horseshoe Lake, Berkshire, England: duck preening feathers

Another GORGEOUS day here in Ontario, I spent several hours at Bluffer's Park/Scarborough Bluffs, and shot about 50 pics of various ducks, geese, and swans. This particular swan was very friendly and seemed to love being photographed.

In case anyone is wondering about the yellow tag, Ontario’s Trumpeters are marked with yellow wing tags. In a typical year, observers report 300-360 individuals. Once a number is read and reported, the data can be entered to help track that bird’s movements, habitat use and reproductive success. Data from tagged bird sightings allows biologists to produce a genetic family tree and to record population growth and range extension.

Tag sightings by observers across the southern part of the province proved useful even when the number is not recorded. Ontario observers have been asked to keep track of the proportion of marked to unmarked birds in groups observed (even if number is not read). The last four year’s analysis of reported proportions reveals a steady increase in the wild population. As the population grows, the percent of total marked birds has declined.

Preening and wind make for interesting styles!

This black tailed godwit at RSPB Marshside was taking time out to preen his feathers. He was using a preen gland under the tail to apply oil with his long bill to his smart plumage.

I think this was the older of the two Great Horned Owlets at Burnsmead preening him/herself. Always amuses me to see this happen, as it just happens naturally. S/he was pulling the tail feathers through his/her beak.

I don't use the 2x on my 300mm very often but these preening spoonbills were very reluctant to come closer to the hide and my time was very limited.

Majestic RING the Amur Tiger male, just a couple of weeks before his return to his home prefecture (county) . We sure are going to miss him, as his presence gave us the 3 lovely little cubs that delight one & all every day.

Preening is a lot of work when you have all those feathers to be straightened and fluffed.

Showing off her flexible neck, I loved the way her already pristine feathers were spread in perfect order on her wings

Gannets at Bempton-cliffs.....have'nt been on flickr as often as i'd like lately, very busy on the moors. View large....left click, scroll.

This pose makes the small heron look a lot bigger than it really is. Green herons can be seen pretty much at will in this pond all summer long, and they are a great delight to observe as they fly around, catch frogs, and preen. In this photo, it is helpful that the sun is illuminating the heron's face. Recropped for closer view than I originally posted.

The heron seemed to be doing two things: preening and shading itself. It kept its wing out for several minutes, even when not actively preening. Butorides virescens.
