On rainy cloudy days it gives one plenty of time to peruse old files. In this case I decided to bring up images from three years ago on a beautiful sunny day at Las Gallinas where I caught this Great Egret spending time 'preening' it's lovely long feathers. This was also a reminder to me that the egrets are coming into their breeding plumage when they are at their most beautiful. This must be quite a task.

This bee was drowning in a cup of blue liquid (no idea what it was, but must have been sugary). I had to save it. Some ignorant person left their unfinished drink on the sidewalk, when a bin was only a few steps away...Love and respect your environment guys! If not for mother earth and the love of other people, at least for the bees! After a while the bee was clean and buzzed away into the distance :).
Taken with my phone and a 15x macro lens. The original video was in 4k but I downgraded it into 1080p and boosted the saturation a bit.
The sound in the video is wind, so if your listening with headphones or speakers, you might want to turn the volume down a bit.
Just love it when birds begin to preen and groom themselves by running their beak through their feathers. This marbled godwit, which stopped by on its migration to the north, was totally hamming it up for the camera. Hope you enjoy.

Interlocking the barbules and plumage maintenance ensures waterproofing. And it looks interesting. This bird is likely a koloa and mallard hybrid.
It was great to be out this weekend shooting Bluebirds, King Fishers and Egrets; but I have to admit my favorite image was of a young mallard preening himself. I usually park myself on my stool at the shoreline and the ducks end up chilling around me and under my tripod so that I can barely move my feet without bumping into one. While waiting for King Fishers to come in closer, I was looking at ways to shed a new light on the common.
I was waiting for that moment I captured a few years ago but it did not happen this time around. Ah well!
A number of Pelicans were hanging around the Marina. Occasionally scoring fish off-cuts from the fishing craft. HWW
This morning I had a wonderful surprise...two little immature Phoebes braved my Mockingbirds and stayed in my backyard for sometime. I caught this one practically upside down preening himself on the fence. I took lots of shots through my window, as I didn't want to scare them away...

Having spent the morning fishing and enjoying a hearty breakfast of minnows the Great Blue Heron took a break to do a bit of preening and feather maintenance,while standing on one leg. It was quite a balancing act, especially with the other leg pulled up close to his body as he worked on his after-breakfast beautification. Wildwood Park, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
