"The best way to predict our future is to invent it."
(Alan Kay 1971)
Open Sailing aims to design and invent future lifestyles to overcome any possible natural and manmade disasters stimulating people’s ingenuity and sense of solidarity. Might it be global warming or energy conflicts, we are living in a time where we are sniffing the ‘Apocalypse’, finally realising our human part of responsibility as the earth is crumbling. 2012 is a year when a collection of apocalyptic events are rumored to happen. We are taking 2012 as an ideal dystopic symbol we design for. 2012 is tomorrow, we must design quickly using these constraints and invent bootstrapping DIY technologies.
Open Sailing method is to convert apocalyptic threats into design constraints. From our compiled set of threat maps, we found that oceans are the safest locations. Ocean survival architecture became our new starting point, but we need to go further than surviving : how can we live together in this new fluid configuration and remain a hyper-connected intelligent social being? We are trying to make a truly “open architecture” : pre-broken, under-defined, reconfigurable, moveable, pluggable, organic, fluid. Can we reach a harmonious dynamic state of interdependence with each other and the earth? Is this the next step of civilization progress? Will we dissociate our concept of progress with infrastructure and metropolis?

Kenworth Predictive Cruise Control, which was recently updated in conjunction with the new 2017 emission engines, combines GPS with cruise control to deliver optimum fuel economy. Predictive Cruise Control optimizes cruising speed based on topographical GPS data inputs. As the truck enters certain types of terrain, such as rolling hills, the system modulates cruising speed to optimize performance. For example, as the truck ascends and crests a hill, Predictive Cruise Control will allow the vehicle speed to drop slightly below the set cruise speed. This boosts fuel economy since the truck is now using momentum instead of fuel to maintain set cruise speed.
The new 2017 emission PACCAR MX-13 Engine can be ordered on Kenworth T680 and T880 models with the newly updated Kenworth Predictive Cruise Control functionality. The update, which was made in conjunction with the launch of the new 2017 emission engines, provides truck fleets and operators up to a 1 percent improvement in fuel economy over the performance of the current version of the Kenworth Predictive Cruise Control
This little iris is a sure predictor of rain. First the bud swells and then when it opens you can be sure that 24-36 hours later it will rain. Never fails.

Day 67.
If you are successful, it’ll never come from the direction you predicted. Same is true if you fail.
With snow predicted predicted to fall from gloomy skies today, a little respite as we begin the slow progress toward the summer solstice. This is an adjacent series I made during my Wrought project from a few years ago. I have always liked the look of cross-processed slide film, the way is jacks up color and deepens saturation. Made with a Rolleiflex 3.5 equipped with Rolleinar close-up attachments. I like to think of these clover flowers as summer snow.

United Kingdom takes command of NATO Task Group
Pictured: Flag bearers from FGS Brandenburg and HMS Duncan.
On the 30th of June the UK took command of the Standing NATO Maritime Task Group 2 (SNMG2) at a ceremony at Souda Bay Naval Station on the Greek Island of Crete.
Rear Admiral Axel Deertz (German Navy) has been in command of the Task Group for six months and has handed command to Commodore James Morley (Royal Navy). During the ceremony HMS Duncan also took over the role of Task Group flagship from FGS Brandenberg.
The Task Group is made up of ships from a number of different NATO nations and has three main roles. Firstly to remain at a very high state of readiness should a reaction be needed to a military or humanitarian crisis. It can never be predicted what events or emerging threats may arise but the Task Group would be the first on call and ready to respond. To do this the Task Group conducts a series of exercises that are designed to ensure that the group has a good understanding of it’s capabilities. The Task Group is then able to operate as a combined, effective NATO force.

St David's Cathedral (in Welsh Eglwys Gadeiriol Tyddewi) situated in St Davids the smallest City in Britain in the county of Pembrokeshire, Wales.
The Cathedral stands on the site of a 6th-century monastery founded by Dewi (David), a Celtic Christian monk, who later became St David the Patron Saint of Wales. Due to the relics of St David, the cathedral was a major pilgrimage destination throughout the Middle Ages.
In the 6th Century St David was reputedly born on a cliff top on the South-West Wales coast during a fierce storm. The site of David’s birth is marked by the ruin of a tiny ancient chapel close to a holy well and the more recent 18th century chapel dedicated to his mother can still be seen near St. David’s Cathedral.
The Celtic saint soon became famous for his learned preaching, devotion to God, and extreme asceticism (he ate only bread and herbs, drank only water, and regularly stood in cold water for long periods). He was nicknamed Dewi Ddyfrwr, David the Water Drinker.
Many legends have circulated about David, including one alleging that King Arthur was his uncle and that among the "prophecies of Merlin" was a prediction that St David would found a bishopric in Wales. In another legend, St. Gildas foretold David's birth when a pregnant woman came into the church as he was preaching. He was struck dumb, and on regaining his power of speech, predicted that she would give birth to a son "with a greater proportion of the divine spirit than has ever fallen to the share of a preacher."
In 1081, William the Conqueror visited St Davids to pray and, probably, to explore its strategic benefits due to its proximity to Ireland. The cathedral was safe under Norman rule, but at the cost of its original Welsh character. The Normans regarded their own form of Christianity as superior to the Celtic way, and soon set out to reform it. This was probably the motivation behind the Latin Life of David written by a bishop's son in 1090, which reports that David visited Jerusalem and was consecrated bishop by the patriarc.

About 10 years ago, a neighbor gave me a 2 gallon can with a scrawny, leggy plant in it and predicted great things. Sounded like a Jack-in-the-Bean-Stalk story at the time but now I believe his outlandish tale. My Silk Floss started quickly growing and growing. And today it's 60 feet high!
The thick green trunk is covered with big fiercely strong and sharp spines. Locals here call it Monkey Tree because they say only monkeys can climb it. The spines break off, wear down and turn gray as the tree ages. Silk Floss trees grow so rapidly that they get bright green stretch marks! Some experts say it's the fastest growing tree in the world... and based on my experience... I think they may be right!
When Silk Floss trees mature, they shed their leaves in September and, all bare, break into a glorious display of gorgeous pink or purple five-petaled flowers. The flowers are followed by pear-shaped capsules filled with seeds embedded in silky white floss. The floss, or Kapok, extracted from the pods is a cotton-like substance with smooth fibers – too smooth for textile thread – that's used to stuff life preservers, saddles, cushions and mattresses. The primary use is for life preservers as the floss can support 30 times its own weight in water!

My father predicted that the world would end the day after my birth. The entire planet of Krypton prepared rockets and other supplies to survive. When the planet wasn't destroyed my father was ridiculed and thought of as a fool.
I grew into a man, married a beautiful woman and had a son, Kon El. Though the day after my son was born my father's predictions proved right. As Kon El and I visited my father, we looked out the window and saw a fire rising across the planet. My father quickly stuffed me and my son into an escape pod and said " Quickly my son, you two must escape!" He then hit the launch button and sent us flying without my beloved wife.
Our ship flew through the sky as me and my son watched our home planet be destroyed behind us. Kon El burst into tears as we soared through space. We eventually crashed into a small green and blue planet called Earth. We landed in front of a small house.
------------------------------------------------------
CRASH
"Honey! A space ship just crashed into our yard!" Yelled an old man "I'm gettin' my gun!"
"There is no space ship in our yard you're just having another senior moment."
"No that is definitely a real alien space ship I'm going to check it out!"
"Whatever."
The old man approached the spaceship and the cockpit opened. Two human looking people came out, a man and a baby. Startled, the old man said "W-who are you?"
The man replied "I am Kal El and this is my son Kon El.

I have predictive text software on my cell phone
that attempts to guess the words that I will type.
I am curious because the words in the software's dictionary are not, what I would think, popular choices...
When I start to type "people"
I get "Pensacola"
Can my phone really think that's a
More common choice to be used in a text message?
When I start to type "I'd"
I get "G'day"
A contraction I've never used in my life.
(but I just might start)
"Still" is predicted as "7th" (I guess for 7th inning)
"Walk" gets "Y2K" (big news 7 years ago...)
"Synagogue" gets "symbioses" (a relationship of species)
"Vagina" gets "vaginae"?
(I had no idea that was the plural)
When I start to type "Christopher"
I get "Christchurch"
I had to look this up, it's a city in New Zealand.
Funnily enough, "gastrointestinal" it gives me off the bat...
But when I start to type "salary"
My phone in all it's infinite wisdom gives me a word
I've never heard: "Rajarshi"
(for the mp3 click below)

The Great Tapestry of Scotland Visitor Centre in Galashiels remains on course to open its doors this year.
The centre, which is seen as a catalyst for the regeneration of Galashiels and the wider Scottish Borders, is nearing the final phase of construction. The project remains within the original budget of £6.7m set in 2016.
Experts predict that the centre - within walking distance of the Borders Railway - will attract over 50,000 visitors to Galashiels each year once opened, as well as create 16 jobs. Almost £900,000 of extra spending per year is predicted for the local economy, providing 12,000 extra visits to complementary attractions, supporting a further 17 jobs.
Work, led by Stirling-based contractor Ogilvie Construction, originally started in June 2019 but had to be paused in March last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This resumed in July in accordance with the Scottish Government’s routemap to recovery of the construction industry.

Considering kayak fishing in Scotland is fairly new , no one would have predicted a competition this year . David took the effort and invited us to Loch Ken a 9-mile long freshwater loch in Dumfries and Galloway .This 2015 edition was a great success from start to finish .Each competitor had a task in hand , trying to catch many different freshwater species , measuring those and quickly returning them to the water . I drove early in the morning through hilly countryside , wooded area waiting for autumn to begin .Nine o’clock start in a beautiful campsite , everyone was preparing each kayak .Most people came from England , some Scotts ,myself and a welshman too .The weather looked perfect , no wind , no rain and light cloud cover .Around 25 kayaks ready to paddle out , the loch is quite narrow ,Glen and myself heading south east progressively .My plan was to catch perch and pike first and then go for a bream and eventually a trout .We paddled slowly exploring the margins , I cast close to the lilly pad and my first perch engulfed the tiny lure . I net the stripy creature and process and measuring the beast . A cool 13 inch and that’s a good start .Glen meanwhile hook into a pike , good little battle ,measure and release his fish .We paddle further down the loch and I try to maximise my chances trolling two smalls lures out . A very small pike took the lure and again ,processing and measuring the fish , I use a board in this case and the whole process is tricky with a live ,slimy fish .Two species now and then we process into catching some bream .At this time more kayakers have joined and we anchor in deeper water . Bait fishing is fun ,I fill up a good swim feeder with groundbait ,one size 14 hook , a maggot and a single sweetcorn . A little wait later and the fish are on the move . A first Bream reach the surface and species number three .We carry on fishing in the same spot , Kenny float fishing even manage a pike .The weather is fantastic , and none of us is actually competing .Watching someone catching fish is thoroughly enjoyable even if down the line all this could turn into a prize .Many bream later we are on the hunt again and now trolling for pike .I use a heavier shad for this task and hook into a fish , grab my rod ,reel in ,the fish gets closer , jump in the air and , yes it’s free ! Soon after ,a few paddle stoke further and another pike hit the lure .Again the small creature slip out of my hand ! No photo for those two fish lost and no prize .Everyone is having a great day and eventually we all paddle back to base .Time to report our catches ,fill up the forms and get all the gears packed in the car . Hot soup , prize to the winners and a Barbecue , a good friendly chat with all the competitors and just the time to head back home .This event was very well organised ,the weather was great , the fishing was tight and I am sure every one will love to just go back .Till next year 2016 then , Loch Ken here we come again .With the Video youtu.be/Rxa7IUI4BuI

I've wanted to take an awesome photo of this car park since it opened, I tried before but it kinda sucked... so I tired again, this time with film.
I really like this car park and my lomo camera, and this photo - so I can predict a lot more photos from these 2 things.
its that time of year when the eagles fish. I checked out the dam and next weekend looks like I will be spending a lot of time there.

Race Director Homer Garich gives pre-race directions - The Linkville Lopers "Turkey Trot" Thanksgiving Day 5K is a predictive race, that is to say, when you sign up you guess your time for the 5K and whoever is closest wins - in this race the fastest runner might not win. No watches are allowed. The entry fee is an unwrapped gift or a cash donation. All proceeds go to the Klamath Falls Gospel Mission. There were 140 runners this year. What a great way to start your Thanksgiving Day - with an actual calorie deficit.

“Natural beauty ignored and hand built wonders disdained, here I find you with your nose in that book.” Ch’loi looked up at the voice of Counselor C’yashi. “If I did not believe you were Ch’voga’s disciple before, you have successfully removed all doubt.”
She looked out at the view of the city and surrounding countryside they had from the palace tower. The quick refocus of near to far hurt her new eyes so she turned back to the book. “There is much to learn and buildings and mountains are mute teachers with little knowledge.”
“What? Little…? Could you be so blind, child? Each building tells the story of the builder. Each home reveals the life of those who dwell within its walls. All collected they tell the history of a culture and a people and predict its destiny!
And those mountains, they have seen it all. They stood there ancient, unchanging, unfazed and unmoved long before men dreamed up the words in Ch’voga’s book.”
“One does not know how to read sticks and stones.”
“Perhaps one just needs a teacher?”
She looked at him as he sat down on a bench near where she squatted. “Perhaps,” she allowed.
“After all, once you didn’t know how to read the words in Ch’voga’s book either and apparently Chofa’s tutors have that remedied. As you say, there is much to learn and not all of it can be found in books.”
“Is the Counselor offering to teach one?”
“Is one asking the Counselor to teach?”
“One has teachers.”
“Yes, I’ve seen. Many teachers, yet all they teach is that book. A rather narrow curriculum.”
“One felt the words of this book make fire.”
“I confess I have no idea what that means.”
“One is content.”
“Ah, I see,” he said. She turned back to the pages and he seemed lost in thought. He interrupted her reading a moment later, “you know, it’s a funny thing, destiny.” She looked up at him. “When you think about it, that is. Just a few short years ago, I sat in this same spot, having a very similar conversation with Ch’voga. I have a.. a talent for seeing the future. It's what gives me value as a counselor. I hesitate to call it a gift. It’s a blessing and a curse really. Did you know it was I who convinced Ch’voga it was his destiny to be a missionary? I sent him into that desert. What grief I bore when he did not return! What guilt!
But now I look at you and think, no. No, I was right all along. It was his destiny to find you. I had not misread the signs. So, in a way, I’m responsible for bringing you here. And now here you and I are, in the same spot and destiny verily dances in the air around us.”
“One is not familiar with destiny. One heard the Fire-maker. One made choices. One obeyed the Fire-maker’s words. One is here.”
“Of course you did dear. I’m not saying any of that is not true. I’m just saying there are forces arrayed which we do not always perceive but are true as well. As true as those mountains.”
Ch’loi looked at the mountains, faded and hazy with distance and her weakened eyesight. “Do the Counselor perceive a ..destiny for one?”
“No child, such is not the question you should be asking. No one has the right to tell you what your destiny is. I cannot claim to know your destiny. I’m merely … a guide.”
“To destiny?”
C’yashi smiled. “To your destiny. The question you would ask, if only you knew to ask it, is: what do you, Ch’loi, legacy of Ch’voga, most fervently desire?”
