Our image shows a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) image of an atomically precise chevron-type graphene nanoribbon (GNR) on an Au(111) surface. The data was acquired in ultra-high vacuum (UHV, pressure < 1E-10 mbar) and under cryogenic temperature (4 K) using a CO functionalized tip. Under these conditions, a bond-resolved STM (BR-STM) image was obtained, showcasing the atomic precision achievable in both the synthesis (flash deposition of polymer precursor + annealing) and characterization. Our research focuses on understanding 1-dimensional carbon-based semiconductors for applications in nanoelectronic, spintronic and photonic devices. Whereas the remarkable properties of atomically precise bottom-up GNRs are often well understood, we aim at going beyond fundamental research only by transferring these systems into future technologies relevant for a digital society.
