"The precise location of heaven on earth has never been established but it may very well be right here."

~ Herb Caen

Had been on a trip to Kuttiady, a town in the Kozhikode district of Kerala, India. The place is known for the Kuttiady Hydro Electric Project situated along the banks of the Kuttiady River. This was clicked at the Kakkayam Dam reservoir, a part of the project. Kakkayam is on the outskirts of the Western Ghats and the Malabar Wildlife Sanctuary. Kakkayam has an abundant wildlife population and is also a trekking and rock climbing destination. Even though we reached before the place opened, the light was harsh, but the weather was suitably pleasant.

After yesterday we were in the dense forest, today we return to a little more open terrain.

To be more precise, we are back at the sunrise in the Königsbrueck Heather from two weeks ago. On the photo you can see quite well that the heather blossom is far from at its peak. You can see the typical purple color everywhere, but you can see from the flowers in the foreground that there is much more possible.

If the weather cooperates, I plan to go there again next weekend.

As you can also see, the sunrise has been here for a while, because the sun has now reached a height that it can shine over the tops of the birch trees. By the way, that was the moment I saw it for the first time this morning. Then the band of clouds, which had stubbornly clung to the horizon up to this point, had finally begun to dissolve.

**🎬 Prompt:**

A luxurious crystal sphere resting on an intricately carved golden base adorned with elaborate baroque patterns, placed on a dark surface scattered with shimmering particles. Inside the sphere, a miniature solar system floats in perfect gravitational suspension: a blazing sun at the center radiating intense golden light, with dynamic solar flares and plasma arcs, surrounded by hyper-realistic planets featuring highly detailed textures (Jupiter’s swirling cloud bands, Saturn’s translucent rings, Earth with visible continents and deep blue oceans, and other planets with icy hues and vibrant atmospheres).

Thin, luminous orbital paths made of pure golden filaments trace precise trajectories around the sun, evoking a sense of perfect celestial mechanics. Thousands of tiny glowing particles drift within the sphere, resembling slow-moving cosmic dust or stardust suspended in time.

Cinematic volumetric lighting with complex reflections on the glass surface, realistic caustics, and subtle chromatic aberrations. Extremely shallow depth of field with warm golden bokeh in the background, creating a magical and intimate atmosphere. High contrast between deep shadows and radiant highlights.

Hyper-realistic style, 8K resolution, advanced ray tracing, global illumination, ultra-detailed textures, micro-reflections, HDR rendering, macro photography, 85mm lens, f/1.4 aperture, slight top-down angle, centered composition. A blend of luxury fantasy and high-end science fiction aesthetics.

Mood: mystical, elegant, timeless — like an ancient cosmic artifact capturing the universe in a frozen moment.

Sant'Antonio is a giant edifice without a precise architectural style. Over the centuries, it has grown under a variety of different influences as shown by the exterior details. It displays a strong influence of St Mark's Basilica in Venice.

The new basilica was begun as a single-naved church, like that of St Francis of Assisi, with an apsidal chancel, broad transepts and two square nave bays roofed with hemispherical domes like that of San Marco, Venice. The exterior style is a mixing of mainly Romanesque and Byzantine elements, with some Gothic features.

Later in the 13th century, the aisles were added in a more Gothic style, the length of each nave bay being divided into two aisle bays with pointed arches and quadripartite vaults.

The eastern apse was also extended in the Gothic style, receiving a ribbed vault and nine radiating chapels in the French manner. Later also, the Treasury chapel was built in 1691 in the Baroque style by Filippo Parodi, a pupil of Bernini. Wikipedia

The Hortus has a brand-new swampy patch that's beholden to bog plants among which carnivorous ones and also a nice variety of tiny heathers. Here's flowering Spike Heath. Note the tiny pistils and also the pretty prink-red.

I understand botanists don't agree on the precise name of this plant; sometimes 'Bruckenthalia' is replaced by 'Erica'. The name is for Samuel von Brukenthal (1721-1803), governor of Transylvania.

Making this photo was possible under a programme of active protection and monitoring of the black tern in the Lower Odra Valley PLB 320003 - a key Natura 2000 site for the species. The Zachodniopomorskie Natural Science Society in Szczecin runs a project co-financed from the European Funds: "Implementation of conservation tasks for the Black Tern Chlidonias niger in the Natura 2000 area of the Lower Oder Valley". The access to the protected site was facilitated during the Nikon Academy workshop held in Reczyce and conducted by Piotr Chara.

It is in the heart of the fiery city, and more precisely at the foot of the Montagne de Bueren, that the Curtius Brewery is located. You just need to climb a few steps to access its magnificent terrace. In good weather, it is even one of the most popular places in town for a drink. Here, we will only serve you the creations of the brewery: the Curtius, which is the big sister of the Torpah, which is also available in three “single hop” models, and the youngest the Black C (stout) .

Today we're taking another look at beautiful city of Dresden before we head back to Prague.

To be precise, we're experiencing a fantastic sunset at the famous and, in my opinion, absolutely spectacular Semper Opera House.

This opera house, built in 1778, takes its name from its architect, Gottfried Semper, whose name was already known beyond the borders of Saxony.

In front of the entrance to the opera house, you can see the 13.5 m high (including the base) King John Monument, the regent who commissioned this building.

I recommend anyone who has the opportunity to attend a performance here (or at least take a guided tour inside). Because the Semper Opera House is just as spectacular inside as it is outside.

I'll be back here on Friday to see Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" again.

A dark steel fence casts its shadow in precise, repeating bars across a granite pavement, the stripes narrowing and accelerating toward a distant vanishing point. Two lamp posts punctuate the emptiness beyond, sentinels of a road that leads nowhere in particular and everywhere in general.

The geometry is almost unreasonably satisfying — vertical bars, horizontal pavement joints, diagonal shadows — three systems of line coexisting without argument under an immaculate Spanish sky.

Distant city: pandemic times

This is from a time when I took good photos (I think) but it was also one of the worst times, at the height of the pandemic, hundreds or thousands of people were dying every day, and I went out to take photos with two masks, alcohol, without touching anything, I walked for hours through the streets without drinking water, because I needed to record somehow what was happening.

This is the precise moment he bit me. It was my own fault. I saw a commotion outside and Camille (cat) was going after this juvenile chipmunk. I grabbed the little guy just as she was closing in, but I had the camera in my hand and decided to take a quick picture. Once he bit me, he wasn't inclined to let go. I shook him off onto a soft patch in the garden, but Camille was right there. So I picked him up again (some people are slow learners) and this time set him down in front of a known chipmunk tunnel.

I'm kidding about the rabies.

I hope.

---------

Good evening!

Today, a little trip down memory lane is in order.

It’s winter 2019, more specifically at Gare de l’Est in Paris, on a gloomy day that made for tricky photography.

The BB 15000 trains, the queens of these parts, were already on the wane, as a few months later they would bow out in favour of the ‘Coradia Liner’-type Régiolis trains, which had already replaced the CC 72000s on Line 4 in 2017, making the atmosphere of the place even more monotonous from a photographic point of view.

This was the case with the 39th in the series, which departed shortly after this photo was taken, so I made the most of the opportunity to capture it properly.

Here it is, purring loudly, ready to take its passengers to Saint-Dizier in the Haute-Marne under the number 839127, formerly part of the TER Vallée de la Marne service, which had recently become the TER Grand Est (at the time the photo was taken).

You can just make out a TGV network train heading off, a blurred streak, adding even more charm to this photograph, which was already beautiful to begin with.

It’s worth noting that it took me several attempts with my 1200D to get this shot right, despite its obvious weaknesses in very low light, but the result speaks for itself!

See you soon for more posts!

Final rehearsal

Hemis (India) – It's not yet 2 p.m. At 3 p.m. sharp, in front of the tourists, the monks will perform a ritual dance performance. Offerings and donations from the faithful are no longer sufficient to finance the monastery's operations; it is necessary to diversify. The growth of tourism is a boon, but the monks must abandon the study of sacred texts for a few hours a day to become part of the entertainment industry.

In the photo, the monks are rehearsing the steps of a dance they will perform publicly for the first time, a dance that some of the dancing monks have not yet fully mastered. They told me what this dance was called, but it has a crazy name and I didn't remember it.

Although there is no precise geographical definition for the "Cornwall’s Forgotten Corner" it is taken to mean (by local residents) all of the Rame Peninsula, as well all of the English Channel coast area to the east, but not including Looe. The northern boundary of the corner is defined by the A38 road.

It is reputed to be "forgotten" because the area is effectively by-passed by visitors to Cornwall, as well as being geographically remote from the administrative headquarters of Cornwall at Truro, almost 50 miles away.

It is isolated due to its geography, as it is bounded by the English Channel, Plymouth Sound, the River Tamar and the River Lynher. Visitors have to double back on themselves after taking the main A38 road from Plymouth at Trerulefoot and onto the A374.

The area effectively became more remote with the improvement of the A30 between Exeter and Penzance, leading visitors to bypass the area altogether.

The Rame Peninsula, part of the Forgotten Corner, is included in the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is also steeped in history, with many military forts, and archaeological points of interest. The area is essentially rural, with the main industry being agriculture. It is also a residential commuting area for Plymouth.

This image was taken from the roadside of the B3247 near Tregantle Fort, just as the morning sunshine disappeared behind a bank of cloud. Three weeks later it still has yet to return!

France Trouville

In the town along the coast of Normandy it is obvious that a large part of the buildings are not very old. This is the area bombarded and destroyed on D-day in the end of WW-II, to hinder the transport of supplies to the armies in Normandy. Many bombs the fleat of aircrafts dropped did not hit the precise marks as roads and railroads, but destroyed sivil plropperties.

I must admire how the new and older stiles are interwowen in the architecture of the new Normandy, just as well as Honfleur who withheld a large area of city intact.

Black Kite (Milvus migrans 1.2-1.5m) accelerates in flight with tail feathers fanned for lift on the downstroke. Yes, they are not very black, but a hundred of them wheeling on thermals hundreds of metres up do look like black specks. I have seen them dive to take small pieces of meet held up at family barbecues. They are very agile, precise and skilful hunters.

I admit, it is a composite image. I shot the dunes in Namibia a few years ago, in Sossusvlei to be precise. I found the stars on the net and yes I’m not proud I blended someone else his shot into mines, but I’m kinda proud of the result. Those who know me, will see I didn't add any signature this time. I would love to mention the creator of the star-shot, but didn’t find it. I’m starting to plan a new trip to Namibia. This type of photography would be part of the trip. I would love to make this kind of visuals for real. It is not in Belgium I will make it, way to much light-pollution. Let’s just say it is a little dream in process.

This project explores the intersection of landscape architecture and environmental color theory. By capturing the precise moment when the summer’s deep chlorophyll greens meet the inaugural warmth of autumn, the series focuses on the "double-image" effect created by static water bodies.

The goal was to utilize a rectangular, man-made pond as a literal canvas. The structured, linear stonework of the pond’s edge provides a rigid frame that contrasts with the fluid, organic silhouettes of the trees. The high-contrast edit emphasizes the saturation levels found in nature, pushing the boundaries of realism to evoke a dreamlike, immersive atmosphere.

One of the sadnesses of the lockdown measures during the COVID-19 pandemic is that there is so little movement from place to place. Having spent the last year in Woodstock, Oxfordshire, I anticipated seeing very much more of the area. Instead, I have remained largely in one place, my contribution to not spreading the virus; that, and a heavy workload have meant that I have seen less of the world than I intended this year.

The silver lining to that cloud is that one sees so very many shades of one place. One sees things anew, even as they seem to pall. It reminds me of a photographer I read of once, I forget the name, who had spent much of his life photographing a nearby beach in numerous seasons, finding subtleties that others might miss. There is a venerability and wisdom in it which is appealing in a world that normally moves far too much.

Here is a bridge, seen most days for the last nine months, half shrouded in mist one recent morning. I am not sure that I matched the medium and the subject. Rollei Superpan 200 is, I discovered belatedly, effectively an aerial photography film; developed in stock ID-11 (around 9'30, with frequent agitation, as I could find no precise information on this pairing), the film is one of very strong contrasts and precise detail. My initial excitement at such stark negatives wavered when I realised how many images had been rather marred by camera shake - a combination of shorter days, a slower film speed, the near-weightlessness of the Zeiss Ikon Nettar, and a deep press of the shutter button had conspired to defeat me.

This one, however, was salvageable. Originally 6x6, the unbroken grey of the sky and the less than interesting grass have been cropped out to give a greater prominence to the lake, bridge, and reflections.

If you like my photographs, why not consider buying a print at captures.life? I haven't yet finished building the site and putting in all of the terms and conditions and policies, but the bits that involve buying a print, having it delivered, and contacting me if anything isn't working or goes wrong are functioning just fine...

The precise height in metres is Very, Very Tall. You can go to a viewing gallery on the 146th floor - your ears pop in the high speed elevator on the way up. The view is grand, but there were lots of reflections on the not-very-clean glass. Also, the one major attraction in Dubai that can’t be seen from the top of the Burj Khalifa is the Burj Khalifa. So here’s a picture of the Burj Khalifa from the bottom, complete with a sub-Bellagio fountain show.

Underneath the Barbican Centre in London to be precise - walked along here many times, the eerie quiet which can sometimes occurs in the middle of London.

This is the mechanism in an antique clock being repaired at The Clock Doctor on north 71st Pl in Scottsdale. I took in an antique music box to be repaired.

AI Overview

This is a close-up photograph of a 19th-century French Morbier or Comtoise clock movement, featuring intricate brass gears and a dark iron frame. [1, 2]

Mechanism Details: These movements typically feature a "going train" that powers the hands and a striking mechanism, often regulated by heavy weights.

Materials and Age: The gears are made of brass, a common material for 19th-century clockwork, housed in a durable iron or steel frame.

Maintenance: Such antique mechanisms require specialized cleaning and lubrication with oil to remain functional.

Haiku feeling:

Brass wheels interlock,

Golden gears spin out the hours,

Time captured in stride.

The mood of this close-up of the antique clock mechanism is industrially elegant, nostalgic, and meticulous.

Here is a breakdown of what creates that specific atmosphere:

Timeless Nostalgia: The aged patina of the brass gears and the dark, heavy iron frame evoke a strong sense of history. It feels like stepping into a quiet, 19th-century workshop, carrying a mood of reverence for old-world craftsmanship.

Hypnotic Order: Because the frame is packed with interlocking teeth, wheels, and levers, the visual mood is incredibly precise, disciplined, and mechanical. It feels like capturing a single, silent heartbeat of time itself.

Warm Mechanical Contrast: The warm, golden tones of the brass clashing against the colder, dark iron structure create a quiet dramatic tension—making the intricate "heart" of the clock feel alive yet frozen in stride.

Often when one is a creative, it is NOT just in one field...

Cooking is another passion of mine, I love looking what I have at hand and create a meal. Yes, Paul has had many ONE-OFFS! Lol.

A number of years ago, I broadened my horizon and explored the Japanese cuisine, what a delight! Of course I also love a nice 'table', so, the Japanese are extremely precise about their presentation, the eye counts too!

So, over the years I have gathered many lovely items to eat in 'STYLE'...

Have a creative day and thanks for your visit, M, (*_*)

While precise figures for the number of homeless women in Exeter are difficult to pinpoint, estimates suggest there are around 25-35 people sleeping rough in the city on any given night. St Petrock's reports a significant increase in visits to their survival and support services. Exeter City Council's count in November 2024 recorded 11 people sleeping rough.
