Today we're taking another look at beautiful city of Dresden before we head back to Prague.

To be precise, we're experiencing a fantastic sunset at the famous and, in my opinion, absolutely spectacular Semper Opera House.

This opera house, built in 1778, takes its name from its architect, Gottfried Semper, whose name was already known beyond the borders of Saxony.

In front of the entrance to the opera house, you can see the 13.5 m high (including the base) King John Monument, the regent who commissioned this building.

I recommend anyone who has the opportunity to attend a performance here (or at least take a guided tour inside). Because the Semper Opera House is just as spectacular inside as it is outside.

I'll be back here on Friday to see Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" again.

Here you can see another photo that was taken a few years ago. To be precise, the last time I stood here was in May 2021 and watched as the glow of the last rays of sunshine faded on the walls of Hohnstein Castle in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.

I'm already making a mental note that I'll definitely have to come here again this year. And best of all in winter. On the one hand, I have never been here at this time of year and on the other hand, the sun sets behind the castle, which brings with it completely different possibilities.

So now I just have to remember it until then.

Final rehearsal

Hemis (India) – It's not yet 2 p.m. At 3 p.m. sharp, in front of the tourists, the monks will perform a ritual dance performance. Offerings and donations from the faithful are no longer sufficient to finance the monastery's operations; it is necessary to diversify. The growth of tourism is a boon, but the monks must abandon the study of sacred texts for a few hours a day to become part of the entertainment industry.

In the photo, the monks are rehearsing the steps of a dance they will perform publicly for the first time, a dance that some of the dancing monks have not yet fully mastered. They told me what this dance was called, but it has a crazy name and I didn't remember it.

Although there is no precise geographical definition for the "Cornwall’s Forgotten Corner" it is taken to mean (by local residents) all of the Rame Peninsula, as well all of the English Channel coast area to the east, but not including Looe. The northern boundary of the corner is defined by the A38 road.

It is reputed to be "forgotten" because the area is effectively by-passed by visitors to Cornwall, as well as being geographically remote from the administrative headquarters of Cornwall at Truro, almost 50 miles away.

It is isolated due to its geography, as it is bounded by the English Channel, Plymouth Sound, the River Tamar and the River Lynher. Visitors have to double back on themselves after taking the main A38 road from Plymouth at Trerulefoot and onto the A374.

The area effectively became more remote with the improvement of the A30 between Exeter and Penzance, leading visitors to bypass the area altogether.

The Rame Peninsula, part of the Forgotten Corner, is included in the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is also steeped in history, with many military forts, and archaeological points of interest. The area is essentially rural, with the main industry being agriculture. It is also a residential commuting area for Plymouth.

This image was taken from the roadside of the B3247 near Tregantle Fort, just as the morning sunshine disappeared behind a bank of cloud. Three weeks later it still has yet to return!

Mount Everest, also known in Nepal as Sagarmāthā and in Tibet as ཇོ་མོ་གླང་མ Jomo Langma, is Earth's highest mountain. It is located in the Mahalangur mountain range in Nepal. Its peak is 8,848 metres (29,029 ft) above sea level. It is not the furthest summit from the centre of the Earth. That honour goes to Mount Chimborazo, in the Andes. The international border between China and Nepal runs across Everest's precise summit point. Its massif includes neighbouring peaks Lhotse, 8,516 m (27,940 ft); Nuptse, 7,855 m (25,771 ft) and Changtse, 7,580 m (24,870 ft).

Coronavirus (or, to be precise, our governments’ response to it) has deprived us the opportunity to travel for the most of 2020. Would 2021 be any better? It doesn’t look like that at the moment – so we have ample time to go back in time to happier days and revisit some of the shots we took then. I hope the colours on this photo will make you day a bit brighter.

Plas Cadnant Hidden Gardens

A historic garden under restoration, situated between Menai Bridge and Beaumaris on the Isle of Anglesey.

In 1996, the present owner bought the 200 acre Plas Cadnant Estate and work began on the restoration of the historic garden and grounds. Since then large parts of the gardens have undergone a spectacular transformation and have been restored to their former glory.

Described as one of North Wales best kept secrets is the hidden world of Plas Cadnant Gardens, situated at the side of the Menai Strait, hidden from view near to Menai Bridge on the Isle of Anglesey.

Former owners of Plas Cadnant were related to the Tremayne family of Heligan House, now famous for its Lost Gardens.

A new garden is being created on an historic site, becoming a plantsman's paradise. Now considered amongst the liveliest twenty gardens of Wales, and featured in a new book 'The Finest Gardens of Wales' by Tony Russell'. Also featured in 'Discovering Welsh Gardens' written by Stephen Anderton and photographed by Charles Hawes.

There is still much work to be done and we hope you will visit us in person or use the website to keep informed of our ongoing progress.

Three gardens in one

Three different gardens have been discovered, including an unusual walled garden with curving walls and pool, a secret valley garden with three waterfalls and river, and an upper woodland garden with stone outcrops and the remains of a 19c. folly.

Black Kite (Milvus migrans 1.2-1.5m) accelerates in flight with tail feathers fanned for lift on the downstroke. Yes, they are not very black, but a hundred of them wheeling on thermals hundreds of metres up do look like black specks. I have seen them dive to take small pieces of meet held up at family barbecues. They are very agile, precise and skilful hunters.

The precise height in metres is Very, Very Tall. You can go to a viewing gallery on the 146th floor - your ears pop in the high speed elevator on the way up. Taken this morning at 9:57 AM. Thanks for visiting, enjoy each day.

Been a bit distracted lately but one thing I was working on was B&W shots of the garlic family, This is one shot from that study.

It seems like I took this a long time ago but I see it wasn't that long. I hope this shot provides a moment of distraction.

All the best in these turbulent times and hope this day finds you safe and in good health! The cause of my distraction and reason I've been a bit absent from flickr lately is I'm approaching retirement and I'm a bit stressed. I was looking to finish out my 40 year career in style, big luncheon planned, lot's of hugging, reminiscing with old friends. Now with the added concern over COVID-19, we postponed the luncheon and I've been working from home for the last week. I cleared out my desk from work but still have another week, 10 days to be precise until my last day on 31 March. Very strange indeed and now I just want to get to the 31st and quell some of this anxiety along with the uncertainty of COVID-19. Well, I'll hang in there so we'll see!

Hunker down, wash those hands and keep your distance from other folk but most of all remember that we're all in this together.

One of the sadnesses of the lockdown measures during the COVID-19 pandemic is that there is so little movement from place to place. Having spent the last year in Woodstock, Oxfordshire, I anticipated seeing very much more of the area. Instead, I have remained largely in one place, my contribution to not spreading the virus; that, and a heavy workload have meant that I have seen less of the world than I intended this year.

The silver lining to that cloud is that one sees so very many shades of one place. One sees things anew, even as they seem to pall. It reminds me of a photographer I read of once, I forget the name, who had spent much of his life photographing a nearby beach in numerous seasons, finding subtleties that others might miss. There is a venerability and wisdom in it which is appealing in a world that normally moves far too much.

Here is a bridge, seen most days for the last nine months, half shrouded in mist one recent morning. I am not sure that I matched the medium and the subject. Rollei Superpan 200 is, I discovered belatedly, effectively an aerial photography film; developed in stock ID-11 (around 9'30, with frequent agitation, as I could find no precise information on this pairing), the film is one of very strong contrasts and precise detail. My initial excitement at such stark negatives wavered when I realised how many images had been rather marred by camera shake - a combination of shorter days, a slower film speed, the near-weightlessness of the Zeiss Ikon Nettar, and a deep press of the shutter button had conspired to defeat me.

This one, however, was salvageable. Originally 6x6, the unbroken grey of the sky and the less than interesting grass have been cropped out to give a greater prominence to the lake, bridge, and reflections.

Zeiss Ikon Nettar, Rollei Superpan 200, ID-11 stock. Cropping and reduction of contrast in Photoshop.

If you like my photographs, why not consider buying a print at captures.life? I haven't yet finished building the site and putting in all of the terms and conditions and policies, but the bits that involve buying a print, having it delivered, and contacting me if anything isn't working or goes wrong are functioning just fine...

Wyoming, USA - In a bizarre turn of events, residents of the picturesque state have reported multiple sightings of peculiar flying objects resembling ice cream cones soaring through the sky. Speculation and excitement have reached unprecedented levels as the enigmatic phenomena continue to captivate the imagination of the community.

Reports describe the objects as large, sometimes dripping cones, adorned with vibrant colors and trailing delicious-looking swirls of ice cream. Witnesses claim the cones maneuvered gracefully, exhibiting precise movements that defied the known laws of aerodynamics.

Government agencies have also been drawn into the frenzy, with local law enforcement working alongside federal agencies to investigate the reports. Official statements from the authorities emphasize that the sightings are being taken seriously, and all efforts are being made to determine the origin and nature of the flying ice cream cones.

Conspiracy theorists, as expected, have put forth a range of intriguing explanations. Some claim that the cones are a secret government project, while others suggest a playful extraterrestrial or extradimensional presence.

While skeptics argue that the sightings are nothing more than an elaborate prank or an optical illusion, the fervor surrounding the flying ice cream cones shows no signs of abating. Wyoming's skies have become a stage for the unexpected, leaving residents and visitors eagerly awaiting the next sighting and wondering what secrets these frozen delights might hold.

Forgive me, dear Flickrite, for not being more precise than 'Camellia' for this backyard flower of ours. There are some 26000 cultivars of the plant and perhaps 50000 differing names. I'm totally unsure about this one's exact moniker. 'Camellia', though, is the name that great Carolus Linnaeus used for the family. It stands for Georg Joseph Kamel (1661-1706). As a lay Jesuit brother he went to the Philippines in 1688 and established a highly-reputed pharmacy in Manila from where he remained in close contact with European naturalists. He entered the order with his final vows in 1696. Kamel was more of a collector than an astute botanist. Linnaeus didn't think highly of his descriptions preferring those of Asian plants by another Georg: the famous, blind botanist of Ambon, Georg Eberhard Rumphius (1627-1702).

Aerobatics is the practice of flying aircraft in maneuvers that involve unusual attitudes and accelerations, going beyond the typical flight envelope of commercial passenger planes. These maneuvers, often seen in air shows, include loops, rolls, spins, and other dynamic movements, requiring precise control and skill. Aerobatics is a sport, a form of entertainment, and also a training method for pilots.

This is the mechanism in an antique clock being repaired at The Clock Doctor on north 71st Pl in Scottsdale. I took in an antique music box to be repaired.

AI Overview

This is a close-up photograph of a 19th-century French Morbier or Comtoise clock movement, featuring intricate brass gears and a dark iron frame. [1, 2]

Mechanism Details: These movements typically feature a "going train" that powers the hands and a striking mechanism, often regulated by heavy weights.

Materials and Age: The gears are made of brass, a common material for 19th-century clockwork, housed in a durable iron or steel frame.

Maintenance: Such antique mechanisms require specialized cleaning and lubrication with oil to remain functional.

Haiku feeling:

Brass wheels interlock,

Golden gears spin out the hours,

Time captured in stride.

Gemini AI

The mood of this close-up of the antique clock mechanism is industrially elegant, nostalgic, and meticulous.

Here is a breakdown of what creates that specific atmosphere:

Timeless Nostalgia: The aged patina of the brass gears and the dark, heavy iron frame evoke a strong sense of history. It feels like stepping into a quiet, 19th-century workshop, carrying a mood of reverence for old-world craftsmanship.

Hypnotic Order: Because the frame is packed with interlocking teeth, wheels, and levers, the visual mood is incredibly precise, disciplined, and mechanical. It feels like capturing a single, silent heartbeat of time itself.

Warm Mechanical Contrast: The warm, golden tones of the brass clashing against the colder, dark iron structure create a quiet dramatic tension—making the intricate "heart" of the clock feel alive yet frozen in stride.

Cooking is another passion of mine, I love looking what I have at hand and create a meal. Yes, Paul has had many ONE-OFFS! Lol.

A number of years ago, I broadened my horizon and explored the Japanese cuisine, what a delight! Of course I also love a nice 'table', so, the Japanese are extremely precise about their presentation, the eye counts too!

So, over the years I have gathered many lovely items to eat in 'STYLE'...

I flicked the thin LED strands making them move while pressing the shutter, while under the table in the dark! lol.. Used the High Speed Continuous feature of the shutter for the first time and it takes LOADS of pics one after the other! Won't be using that feature often, but it was great for capturing the quick moving moment of boing. ;-)

Precise measurement

This photograph features a female Blue-chested Hummingbird (Polyerata amabilis) at Casa Galú, Capurganá, Chocó, Colombia. Taken in the early morning as soft coastal light filtered through lush garden foliage, she perches delicately on a vibrant red heliconia bract. Her iridescent emerald throat and subtle blue chest catch the first rays of dawn, contrasting beautifully with slate-gray wings and the creamy bokeh of tropical leaves in the background. The mood is one of hushed serenity, where every droplet of moisture and feather detail feels suspended in time.

From a technical perspective, I framed this image at eye level to emphasize the hummingbird’s poised posture and the graceful curve of her bill. A narrow depth of field isolates the subject, while careful metering preserves highlight and shadow detail across her plumage. Shooting handheld required steady technique and anticipation—waiting for that perfect moment when the bird paused between garden visits. This frame reflects the balance of patient fieldcraft and precise exposure control needed to reveal the delicate beauty of a seldom-seen female in her natural oceanfront garden habitat.
