Here’s and another image from my archives, taken in 1986 to be precise from the south tower rooftop observation platform of the World Trade Center take with my Minolta X-700 SLR. The Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges and East River all clearly visible. I never did go up to the top of the WTC again and obviously it was destroyed on September 11th 2001. Did not imagine that 1986 would be the last time on that observation platform, always imagined taking my kids but kept putting it off. For those of us that live here in the New York City when you carefully look at the area surrounding the Brooklyn Bridge you realize how much that area has changed in 32 years, no Jane’s Carousel, boarded up Empire Warehouse and to the south where today is Brooklyn Bridge Parks grassy knolls there was unused warehouse space. On the Manhattan side today a 800 foot 71 story tower dwarfs the bridge on its north. Interestingly enough though under the Brooklyn Bridge is a Circleline Boat which still is in operation with it tours of New York City.
A photo taken from a bridge over the Kandagawa toward the confluence with the Sumidagawa. Two photos were merged to get this image.
Yanagibashi (柳橋) meaning "willow bridge" literally is the name of the green-painted bridge over the Kandagawa as well as that of the neighbourhood surrounding the bridge. It may be difficult to imagine from this concrete townscape that this area used to be a major entertainment district since the Edo period until the 1960s. Yanagibashi used to be well-known for the teams of Geisha (芸者).
There used to be a number of sophisticated Ryoutei (料亭) restaurants that had been used for parties, events, business and political meetings. There were also Okiya houses (置屋) that lodges, train and dispatch, Geisha to such restaurants.
Geisha is a well-known Japanese word without precise understanding. They are entertainers tasked to boost the mood of parties and meetings. They are trained to play music and/or dance as well as various talks and games to entertain people. There are also male Geisha although they are now an endangered species.
If you hire Geisha for your party, you will be asked how many of them you need. Basically there are two types: one is Tachikata (立方) who dances, and the other is Jikaka (地方) who sits and plays music instrument like Shamisen (banjo-like instrument) and Taiko (drum) and/or sing. You usually need one Tachikata and one Jikata. As for male Geisha, one is enough and he will make you laugh with his skill of talks.
Yanagibashi declined in the 1960s and its role for MICE (meeting, incentive, convention and event) has been taken over by modern hotels.
Another factor was the construction of the razor blade embankment that annihilated the advantage of Yanagibashi on the scenic riverside location. Only the Yakatabune (屋形船) business survives today, which takes you on the Sumidagawa for party and dinner on a boat laid with Tatami mattress as you see in the photo.

Kinnoull Tower, Perth, Scotland
…….well 14 hours later to be precise.
Having scouted and shot the scene the evening before and checked out the forecast, I knew there was a chance of some fog/low cloud the following morning so I set off in the dark, parked up as close as I could and retraced my steps up Kinnoull Hill to one of the tower overlooks. Conditions were totally different to the sunset the day before - just as beautiful to me but in a different way.
For those interested in the Tower who didn’t see the shot from the preceding evening then if you go to that shot and look at the narrative it will give you some background www.flickr.com/photos/184798091@N07/55084902861/in/datepo...

Sunrise at The Roman Forum, Rome
Well after a bit of a break due to retirement projects being initiated and a week in Anglesey I’ll give you another Rome shot but not the Colosseum this time (although I have plenty more I could post!).
The shot of the Roman Forum at sunrise is by no means unique and actually it’s probably one of the honeypot locations to shoot in Rome. I ended up going twice and the only time in Rome I ever saw other Togs with tripods was on both occasions I visited here! If you have shot here you know that there is a limited of lateral movement you can make - especially if you want a sun-star and for me it was a must have here. I’ve seen shots taken earlier in the year with the sun rising further to the right in the scene but I quite liked being able to place it where it is here. Deciding on the precise crop was probably the hardest thing given some of the features you can’t see but are just out of frame! I wanted to minimise any modern items within the main Forum area.
The site of the Roman Forum was originally a marshy burial ground. It was first developed in the 7th century BCE, growing over time to become the political, religious and commercial hub of the Roman empire. On any given day, it hummed with activity as shoppers thronged its teeming streets, senators debated affairs of state, and lawyers hustled in its busy law courts.
Like many of ancient Rome's urban developments, the Forum fell into disrepair and gradually buried under silt after the fall of the Roman Empire until eventually it was used as pasture land. In the Middle Ages it was known as the Campo Vaccino (Cow Field) and extensively plundered for its stone and marble. The area was systematically excavated in the 18th and 19th centuries, and excavations continue to this day. www.lonelyplanet.com/italy/rome/ancient-rome/attractions/...

Mount Everest, also known in Nepal as Sagarmāthā and in Tibet as ཇོ་མོ་གླང་མ Jomo Langma, is Earth's highest mountain. It is located in the Mahalangur mountain range in Nepal. Its peak is 8,848 metres (29,029 ft) above sea level. It is not the furthest summit from the centre of the Earth. That honour goes to Mount Chimborazo, in the Andes. The international border between China and Nepal runs across Everest's precise summit point. Its massif includes neighbouring peaks Lhotse, 8,516 m (27,940 ft); Nuptse, 7,855 m (25,771 ft) and Changtse, 7,580 m (24,870 ft).
Chobe, Botswana - the Taxonomists seem to be having a lot of fun with this species/family so I am sticking with my old guidebook particularly since many of the new "species" apparently hybridise anyway. Our guide actually called this as a Swamp Boubou (Laniarius bicolor) but that should have a pure white belly (not tinged with pink as this bird is) although, again, hybrids are noted.
Sometimes knowing its precise identity is actually not that important!

After yesterday we were in the dense forest, today we return to a little more open terrain.
To be more precise, we are back at the sunrise in the Königsbrueck Heather from two weeks ago. On the photo you can see quite well that the heather blossom is far from at its peak. You can see the typical purple color everywhere, but you can see from the flowers in the foreground that there is much more possible.
If the weather cooperates, I plan to go there again next weekend.
As you can also see, the sunrise has been here for a while, because the sun has now reached a height that it can shine over the tops of the birch trees. By the way, that was the moment I saw it for the first time this morning. Then the band of clouds, which had stubbornly clung to the horizon up to this point, had finally begun to dissolve.

Do you still remember the photo of the death railway near Kanchanaburi in Thailand?
Here we are again at this place. To be more precise, I'm still standing in the same spot. Only the train has now moved in my direction.
Luckily for everyone, it drives very slowly at this point. Good for me because so I was able to quickly change the lens on my camera, change the setting and get back into position. But even more fortunately for the passengers sitting on this train, because the wooden structure looks no more trustworthy up close than it does from a distance (as you can probably see here). 6 trains cross this viaduct per day (3 in each direction). This is the first one of the day, because at seven in the morning there are hardly any tourists here and it is much more relaxed.
Unfortunately, I didn't have the opportunity to ask the train driver whether he agreed to the publication of this photo. However, since he greeted me warmly as he drove past, I assume it's okay.

The Arctic Henge is like a huge sundial, aiming to capture the sunrays, cast shadows in precise locations and capture the light between aligned gateways.
I heard of this idea a year or so before the building started and was fashinated of the idea and the ideologi. Now the main gates are ready and some of the stones for the dwarf gates are waiting to be placed. www.northiceland.is/en/places/nature/arctic-henge

English Counties
This is another collection of images which have been photographed over a long period of time. These are photographs taken mostly on holidays throughout our great English Counties. In the day we have travelled the length and breadth of Great Britain, with many coastal and country walks and a lot of photography.
This selection has been chosen from the many East Sussex photographs I have taken, (Bodiam to be precise). Sussex is a lovely county to visit with many places of interest.
Today we're taking another look at beautiful city of Dresden before we head back to Prague.
To be precise, we're experiencing a fantastic sunset at the famous and, in my opinion, absolutely spectacular Semper Opera House.
This opera house, built in 1778, takes its name from its architect, Gottfried Semper, whose name was already known beyond the borders of Saxony.
In front of the entrance to the opera house, you can see the 13.5 m high (including the base) King John Monument, the regent who commissioned this building.
I recommend anyone who has the opportunity to attend a performance here (or at least take a guided tour inside). Because the Semper Opera House is just as spectacular inside as it is outside.
I'll be back here on Friday to see Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" again.

Although there is no precise geographical definition for the "Cornwall’s Forgotten Corner" it is taken to mean (by local residents) all of the Rame Peninsula, as well all of the English Channel coast area to the east, but not including Looe. The northern boundary of the corner is defined by the A38 road.
It is reputed to be "forgotten" because the area is effectively by-passed by visitors to Cornwall, as well as being geographically remote from the administrative headquarters of Cornwall at Truro, almost 50 miles away.
It is isolated due to its geography, as it is bounded by the English Channel, Plymouth Sound, the River Tamar and the River Lynher. Visitors have to double back on themselves after taking the main A38 road from Plymouth at Trerulefoot and onto the A374.
The area effectively became more remote with the improvement of the A30 between Exeter and Penzance, leading visitors to bypass the area altogether.
The Rame Peninsula, part of the Forgotten Corner, is included in the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is also steeped in history, with many military forts, and archaeological points of interest. The area is essentially rural, with the main industry being agriculture. It is also a residential commuting area for Plymouth.
This image was taken from the roadside of the B3247 near Tregantle Fort, just as the morning sunshine disappeared behind a bank of cloud. Three weeks later it still has yet to return!
This is the precise moment he bit me. It was my own fault. I saw a commotion outside and Camille (cat) was going after this juvenile chipmunk. I grabbed the little guy just as she was closing in, but I had the camera in my hand and decided to take a quick picture. Once he bit me, he wasn't inclined to let go. I shook him off onto a soft patch in the garden, but Camille was right there. So I picked him up again (some people are slow learners) and this time set him down in front of a known chipmunk tunnel.
I'm kidding about the rabies.
I hope.

Distant city: pandemic times
This is from a time when I took good photos (I think) but it was also one of the worst times, at the height of the pandemic, hundreds or thousands of people were dying every day, and I went out to take photos with two masks, alcohol, without touching anything, I walked for hours through the streets without drinking water, because I needed to record somehow what was happening.

Final rehearsal
Hemis (India) – It's not yet 2 p.m. At 3 p.m. sharp, in front of the tourists, the monks will perform a ritual dance performance. Offerings and donations from the faithful are no longer sufficient to finance the monastery's operations; it is necessary to diversify. The growth of tourism is a boon, but the monks must abandon the study of sacred texts for a few hours a day to become part of the entertainment industry.
In the photo, the monks are rehearsing the steps of a dance they will perform publicly for the first time, a dance that some of the dancing monks have not yet fully mastered. They told me what this dance was called, but it has a crazy name and I didn't remember it.
Sant'Antonio is a giant edifice without a precise architectural style. Over the centuries, it has grown under a variety of different influences as shown by the exterior details. It displays a strong influence of St Mark's Basilica in Venice.
The new basilica was begun as a single-naved church, like that of St Francis of Assisi, with an apsidal chancel, broad transepts and two square nave bays roofed with hemispherical domes like that of San Marco, Venice. The exterior style is a mixing of mainly Romanesque and Byzantine elements, with some Gothic features.
Later in the 13th century, the aisles were added in a more Gothic style, the length of each nave bay being divided into two aisle bays with pointed arches and quadripartite vaults.
The eastern apse was also extended in the Gothic style, receiving a ribbed vault and nine radiating chapels in the French manner. Later also, the Treasury chapel was built in 1691 in the Baroque style by Filippo Parodi, a pupil of Bernini. Wikipedia
No, nobody lost their hat or left a winter boot behind. This is actually a live animal.
To be precise, it's a chicken. And not one that accidentally stuck its beak in an electrical socket, but a Silkie chicken.
Despite numerous references in literature and other records (even Marco Polo wrote about these birds), it remains unclear who came up with the idea of a chicken where you can't tell which end is which.
What practical purpose this breed is supposed to serve escapes me, but the Silkie chicken certainly looks amusing.
And by the way, Cousin Itt is a director from the film and series "The Addams Family". Just Google it if you don't understand the title.

A quiet but precise moment on a Japanese railway platform.
From an elevated perspective, the conductor performs the final safety check beside a sleek modern train. The tactile paving lines guide the eye through the frame, contrasting with the smooth curves of the train’s body.
In Japan, even the smallest gesture before departure becomes part of a ritual of precision, discipline, and timing.
Black Kite (Milvus migrans 1.2-1.5m) accelerates in flight with tail feathers fanned for lift on the downstroke. Yes, they are not very black, but a hundred of them wheeling on thermals hundreds of metres up do look like black specks. I have seen them dive to take small pieces of meet held up at family barbecues. They are very agile, precise and skilful hunters.

During our visit to the Roy Lichtenstein exhibition in Mons, we visited this park labeled "Remarkable Garden" since May 2021, this 3ha estate accommodates the buildings of a former brewery-malt house surrounded by a park with century-old trees. decorative objects.
Set back in a large wooded property, fenced with a high wall and gates, neoclassical ensemble of an old brewery built in the 2nd half of the 19th century, today called the Château du Bocage. Arranged in semi-enclosed order around a quadrangular courtyard, low outbuildings, barn and imposing main building, remarkably homogeneous.
the decorative structures offered by the Quintessence store are grouped by theme. You can see them throughout the walk with that characteristic rust of Corten steel everywhere.
This is the new trend. Corten steel is now suitable for cutting plant decorations that can complement a special atmosphere in the garden. For these precise cuts, craftsmen use a digitally controlled laser beam. It melts metal without creating burrs. The line can be very delicate.
Claudine took the opportunity to buy three garden decorations including a module.

Coronavirus (or, to be precise, our governments’ response to it) has deprived us the opportunity to travel for the most of 2020. Would 2021 be any better? It doesn’t look like that at the moment – so we have ample time to go back in time to happier days and revisit some of the shots we took then. I hope the colours on this photo will make you day a bit brighter.
Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona, U.S.A.
She always picks the worst moment. I was about to play, focused, precise… until she sneaked in and started tickling me. Her fingers find their way, and my composure collapses in an instant. The Kokyuu slips from my hands, carried away by a laugh I can no longer control. I could resist… but what’s the point? Some interruptions are worth far more than calm: stolen moments, unpredictable… and intensely alive. 🎶😂

...has a different meaning these days. Not legal retribution for serious misdeeds, rather, it has more to do with having overindulged in a Bacchanalian style ie hungover 😵
Moving on...tomorrow sees moi et ma GLW off to sunnier climes for a week. Spain if you must know, Alicante to be precise. Huzzah!
Precise location no longer known. A photogenic species. Believe it or not this shot was not flash-illuminated. A widespread breeder in North and Central America.

What makes this little chapel so charming and interesting is its particularity of being built into the rock. More precisely than a troglodyte chapel, it is said to be semi-troglodyte. Troglodyte means that the structure is carved into the rock or installed in a natural cave. Here, the cave is only a facade on which walls have been added. Thus, the construction seems to be leaning against and nestled against the rock.
M-12 highway with the Civitas Metropolitano Stadium in the background. At that precise moment, the match between Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid, what we call a "derby", was taking place in the stadium.
There wasn't much traffic at 9:15 on a Sunday evening, as most people were sitting in front of the TV watching the game.

I wish you a good first week of Autumn!

I admit, it is a composite image. I shot the dunes in Namibia a few years ago, in Sossusvlei to be precise. I found the stars on the net and yes I’m not proud I blended someone else his shot into mines, but I’m kinda proud of the result. Those who know me, will see I didn't add any signature this time. I would love to mention the creator of the star-shot, but didn’t find it. I’m starting to plan a new trip to Namibia. This type of photography would be part of the trip. I would love to make this kind of visuals for real. It is not in Belgium I will make it, way to much light-pollution. Let’s just say it is a little dream in process.
