A prayer wheel is a cylindrical wheel on a spindle made from metal, wood, stone, leather or coarse cotton. Traditionally, the mantra "Om Mani Padme Hum" is written in Sanskrit on the outside of the wheel. Also sometimes depicted are Dakinis, Protectors and very often the 8 auspicious symbols Ashtamangala. According to the Tibetan Buddhist tradition based on the lineage texts regarding prayer wheels, spinning such a wheel will have much the same meritorious effect as orally reciting the prayers.

Thatcher's Prayer was read during the meeting by Sussex LRC Chair, Claire Wadey, as follows:

Where there are pits

May we bring destruction

Where there are communities

May we bring strife

Where there is work

May we bring unemployment

Where there is hope

May we bring despair.

Claire emphasised links between the policies of the Thatcher governments and the Tory-led Coalition, and the links that should be forged in opposition to such policies. Claire asked all present to campaign for Labour to put forward socialist policies committed to a real alternative to austerity.

Buddhist make-merit day.

This lady arrived with her boyfriend to make offerings and prayers to her ancestors & Prince Abhakara Kiartivongse, Prince of Chumphon (19 December 1880 – 19 May 1923).

This day was the day before Chinese New Year celebrations commenced (for the Year of the Dragon!) and is make merit day for many Thai people, especially those of Chinese descent.

There are numerous ways to make merit:

Dressing in red and gold clothes.

Giving red coloured envelopes containing money (ang pao) to friends & family.

Burning incense.

Paying respect to Chinese gods or ancestors.

Taking flowers, and offering prayers, food and drinks at shrines.

Donating food, drink or money to Monks.

Paying for firecrackers to be set off, in order to deter evil spirits

Making merit brings good and agreeable results, determines the quality of the next life, and contributes to a person's growth towards enlightenment - according to Buddhist principles.

I can't take any of the credit for this; it was my wonderful and super-talented prayer team that set all this up, including making the laybyrinth from scratch. I'm hoping they can make this simple morning event an annual thing.

Praying together during the blessing of our rings. Our wedding was far from traditional Chinese, and not as organized as any American wedding I've attended. We were all laid back, no chairs were arranged except for her parent's. Everything except the question of "Who gives this bride away?" was in English. We had prayers, scripture everything that was important to us.

Prayer For Peace

"Lord, make me an instrument of your peace ehere there is hatred.

Let me sow love: where there is injury, pardon;

Where there is doubt, faith;

Where there is despair, hope;

Where there is darkness, light;

Where there is sadness, joy.

O divine master grant that I may seek no so much to be consoled as to console:

To be understood as to understand;

To be loved as to love;

For it is in giving that we recieve;

It is pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen"

Saw this prayer on the wall, and thought it was nice. I'm not religous to say the least, but for some reason this one caught my eye. :]
