we came across this little building pretty much in the middle of the woods. it seemed to be a little altar, unlocked, just there.

Prayer may be sweet in cottage homes,

Where sire and child devoutly kneel,

While through the open casement nigh

The vernal blossoms firagrant steal.

Prayer may be sweet in stately halls.

Where heart with kindred heart is blent,

And upward to th' eternal throne

The hymn of praise melodious sent.

But he who fain would know how warm

The soul's appeal to God may be,

From friends and native land should turn,

A wanderer on tile faithless sea;—

Should hear its deep, imploring tone

Rise heavenward o'er the foaming surge,

When billows toss the fragile bark,

And fearful blasts the conflict urge.

Naught, naught appears but sea and sky;

No refuge where the foot may flee:

How will he cast, O Rock divine,

The anchor of his soul on thee!

Traditionally, prayer flags are used to promote peace, compassion, strength, and wisdom. The flags do not carry prayers to gods, a common misconception; rather, the Tibetans believe the prayers and mantras will be blown by the wind to spread the good will and compassion into all pervading space. Therefore, prayer flags are thought to bring benefit to all.

By hanging flags in high places the Lung ta will carry the blessings depicted on the flags to all beings. As wind passes over the surface of the flags which are sensitive to the slightest movement of the wind, the air is purified and sanctified by the Mantras.

The prayers of a flag become a permanent part of the universe as the images fade from exposure to the elements. Just as life moves on and is replaced by new life, Tibetans renew their hopes for the world by continually mounting new flags alongside the old. This act symbolizes a welcoming of life's changes and an acknowledgment that all beings are part of a greater ongoing cycle.

Mother, may this prayer be granted:

That Christ's love may be implanted

In the depths of my poor soul.

At the cross, your sorrow sharing,

All your grief and torment bearing,

Let me stand and mourn with you.

Fairest maid of all creation,

Queen of hope and consolation,

Let me feel your grief sublime.

PRAYER FOR KEUKA, By Dave Walczak, 6/2/10, (ACRYLIC, 5’ – 8” X 4’ – 0”)

The life, beauty & magic you bestow on us are forever cherished. With courage and grace we offer our love and appreciation by protecting life’s circle and being good stewards. Your pristine water is our blood, the sky our clear breathe, and the earth that cradles you, our arms. We will protect you from invading gas drillers, whose spiritual blindness, carelessly threatens your well being with toxins born from greed.
