Shortly about me:
It’s my passion to create stories and bring back pictures of events, people and places that are rarely seen. It’s a combination of exploration, exposition and artistry that together create a life of adventure and excitement.
In my work it is imperative for me that information be accurate and the images must be respectful of the subject and viewer. My goal is to combine creativity with practicality to capture the best possible images to document events, tell a story, meet the picture editor's deadlines.

Sheridan&Co were given the task to translate this premium Italian brand and create an appropriate retail site that would sit comfortably within a supermarket environment. The challenge was to strike a balance between showcasing a premium, consultation-based cosmetics brand and combine the practicalities of a self-select unit in a 24 hour supermarket. These images show what we created for their site located in Tesco’s, Dudley.
The front entryway of the abandoned St. Paul's Church. It was a German Evangelical church, founded in 1850 by northern Germans who spoke the Low German dialect. These northern Germans broke away from St. John's German Protestant Church because they felt that the southern Germans were trying to exert too much influence over the services. This building's design is a mixture of Greek Revival and Gothic. It never had a steeple, though at one point a clock sat on the top where the present-day cupola now sits. The abandoned drugstore on the lower level is not a modern-day intrusion; it was established when the church was founded to help provide financial security to the congregation and help pay off building costs. Good German practicality! This sits at 15th and Race Streets in Over-the-Rhine in Cincinnati. See the next photo in this set to see the German sign marker on the front.
"I have a real soft spot in my heart for Rodinas. They embody everything I like about Soviet industrial and design philosophy -- Ruggedness and practicality."
(Mark Gordon (Welcome to USSR Time!) July 9th, 2007 forums.watchuseek.com/f10/rodina-appreciation-thread-7271...)
"The Rodina was the Soviet Union's first automatic wristwatch.
It was produced at the First Moscow Watch Factory from 1956 through the early 1960s.
Depending on who you are talking to, the 22-jewel movement is designated 2415A or yH-9M (41yH)
Over about 15 years a huge quantity of these watches were produced, including export versions, with several different dial designs.
Eventually this movement was replaced by sleeker calibers such as the 29-jewel 2415 and 29-jewel 2416."

In 1969, British Leyland intended to upgrade the Mini to try and keep the style with the times, calling in once again Sir Alec Issigonis to design a compact and practical little car of the same lines. The idea was to give the car a front engine with front wheel drive and devote as much of the car's platform to passenger and luggage capacity. The car was also intended to be a hatchback for more practicality and would enter sales 5% cheaper than the current Mini of 1959.
The car was launched with a more angular design to fit the times, and powered by a new 9X 850cc engine and transmission. Hydrolastic suspension was considered, but changed instead to a more conventional front suspension with vertical struts and independent rear suspension with torsion bars.
The car, although providing more space internally than the original Mini, was unfortunately not forwarded by the British Leyland management, and thus only resulted in a single prototype. Unbeknownst to British Leyland, the car could have been a real winner, but instead the lucrative family hatchback market was swept out from underneath them by the likes of FIAT and Volkswagen.
Now, this was hard to take because my dogs are very inconsistent. They kept moving around and leaving entirely.
If you're unfamiliar, the idea behind "The Burning House" is essentially the philosophical and also very real dilemma of choosing the things you would take in the event of your house burning down.
I think this really says something about a person, and I hope from what I show here, it shows good things about me.
The items shown here are:
- My dogs: Xero (Black and white) & Millie (Brown, Black, and White). This decision should need not an explanation.
- My trench coat
- A scarf to accompany it
- My bag, which holds the most important of items from my current read, wallet, license, passport, and phone. T he works.
- My Adventure Time sword (for practicality).
- A Domino set in its wooden container. This was the set of dominoes my grandpa and I would play with a lot. He taught me dominoes with this set.
- "Lost At Sea" signed by Bryan Lee O'Malley
- My journal full of my doodles and stories.
- Axis: Bold as Love by Jimmy Hendrix - the first album I ever purchased.
- Beanie, for practicality.
- Assorted films (pictured: Citizen Kane, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Dan in Real Life, Up in the Air, and Children of Men)
- Assorted books (pictured: To Kill a Mockingbird, Animal Farm, The Genius and the Goddess, and Hocus Pocus.
- My car keys, of course.
- My Canon (not pictured)
Now, I probably wouldn't grab all of these in the event of an ACTUAL fire, but it'd be nice to think I would.
Like York Integrated Electronic Control Centre (IECC), Tyneside IECC dates from British Rail's East Coast Main Line (ECML) modernisation and electrification project of the 1980s.
Network Rail originally planned for Tyneside IECC to close, and its area of control be transferred to York Rail Operations Centre (ROC) during the early 2020's. However, several factors - including cost, practicality, future resignalling strategy and the impact of the Covid pandemic causing mass staff absences in large workplaces - led to a change of plan.
Tyneside IECC therefore never migrated to York ROC, but was instead refurbished with provision made for extra workstations, saw rearrangement of the existing workstations on the Operations Floor, replacement of the original IECC signalling control equipment with WestCad, and - curiously - renaming to Tyneside ROC.
Tyneside ROC very much retains the character of an IECC, has none of the typical characteristics of a ROC, but equally within Network Rail we also have several locations which very much resemble ROCs but are not named as such.
Tyneside IECC's area of control on renaming was the ECML from the fringe with York ROC north of Northallerton at Danby Wiske through Darlington, Durham and Newcastle to the fringe with Morpeth SB north of Plessey. The busy section of railway - much of which is shared with or exclusive to Tyne & Wear Metro operations - from Newcastle to beyond Sunderland, including the entire South Hylton branch, was also under Tyneside IECC's control. Parts of the Shildon branch, Dinsdale Lines towards Eaglescliffe and the Tyne Valley Line towards Blaydon were controlled from here too.
Since renaming, Tyneside ROC still retains the existing Darlington, Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle and Sunderland workstations, but resignalling of the Blyth & Tyne network in connection with 2024's return of passenger services to the area - marketed as the "Northumberland Line" - saw the additional Ashington workstation commissioned.
This photo shows part of the Newcastle workstation, which controls the busy railway through Newcastle Central station, past Heaton Depot, Benton Junction and on towards the Morpeth area.
At the time of this photo in January 2024, Newcastle workstation fringed with Gateshead workstation (twice - basically south of the King Edward VII and High Level Bridges across the River Tyne), Heaton Depot's busy Control Tower (actually a Portakabin type structure these days), Morpeth SB and Newsham SB.
My visit to Tyneside on this occasion was to learn more about the interaction between the ROC and Heaton Control Tower, in connection with a secondment I was on at the time, so this photo shows a close up of the Heaton area, and also the fringes with Morpeth SB and Newsham SB. A photo giving an overview of the entire workstation can be seen via the link below.
www.flickr.com/photos/194923731@N02/54312146383/in/album-...
As mentioned above, the Blyth & Tyne network was resignalled during 2024, Newsham SB was one of the boxes to be closed and so Newcastle workstation now instead fringes with Ashington workstation at the other end of the Operations Floor.
I have wanted a pith helmet since I was a little girl and watched Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy over and over and over. Because of old movies, the pith helmet was, to me as a kid, what explorers, archaeologists, paleontologists, and other adventurers wore. And Jane, in the Edgar Rice Burroughs's Tarzan novels. And Teddy Roosevelt.
The pith helmet is an adaptation of the native salakot headgear of the Philippines. Europeans loved its looks and practicality, adapting it for both military and civilian use. The Viet Minh of Vietnam adapted and adopted the pith helmet from the former French colonizer.

Aston Martin has returned to one of their historic nameplates for their 4-door Grand Touring saloon.
Rapide is the name given to a previous incarnation of the 4-door concept.
Built from the Aston Martin VH (Vertical-Horizontal) aluminium architecture, the Rapide includes an additional 300mm within the wheelbase, allowing for another set of doors, and a more spacious 2nd row of seats. The body also adds a tailgate, opening to the roof, to improve luggage capacity and access.
The Rapide is powered by a 350 kW version of the Aston Martin 5.9 litre V12.
A stylish mode of saloon format luxury, the Rapide as a valuable addition to the Aston Martin marque for those looking for a bit more practicality from their Grand Touring.

This is the historical story that I posted along with a photo of an Eva Zeisel Fine Stoneware from Monmouth coffee cup that I posted on Facebook during the crisis. This is one of 30+ coffee cups that I have already posted on my Facebook groups. You can see my other coffee cup posts on Instagram... ATOMICSCOTT.
Having coffee today with my favorite mid-century modern cup and saucer from my absolute favorite dinnerware designer… Eva Zeisel Fine Stoneware from Monmouth in the Pals pattern! The tablecloth is a Russel Wright design for Simtex. Today's history is longer than usual.
Of all Eva’s dinnerware lines, none better exemplified her design philosophy of linking the past and present, combining practicality with fun, or better displayed her virtuosity than Eva Zeisel Fine Stoneware from Monmouth. Consisting of fifty-one pieces, the line was organized into basic dinnerware, a kitchenware line, and a group of unique, bird-shaped serving pieces, all available in fifteen patterns and three solid glazes. It was easily her most comprehensive dinnerware line. Although many of the shapes and patterns were reminiscent of folk art, the line was sufficiently modern to earn a place in the Museum of Modern Art’s 1954 Good Design exhibit.
In the early 1950s, Monmouth, a division of the Western Stoneware Company, in Monmouth, Illinois, was experiencing a decline in orders because of increased foreign competition. In 1952, hoping to bolster sales, company president Addis Hull, whose brother headed Hull Pottery Company in Zanesville, Ohio (for which Eva had designed a small line of decorative wares) invited Eva to design a line of dinnerware and dining accessories.
Eva had never designed dinnerware made out of stoneware, but she brought new thinking to the design process. Stoneware was usually thick-walled and heavy, but Eva envisioned and developed elegant, informal pieces made out of unusually lighter and finer stoneware. It took Eva and the ceramic engineers at Monmouth over a year to develop the line, introducing new equipment and sharpening the company’s engineering to assure trouble-free production.
During development, Eva stayed at a local hotel with her room doubling as a design office. Within the family of dinnerware she developed, decidedly modern forms were unexpectedly grouped together with bird-like shapes… perhaps inspired by a family heirloom, folk art duck decoy that Eva kept in her home. Patterns were a delightful mix of modern and folk-art designs.
Eva seldom created patterns for her dinnerware lines, but Fine Stoneware was an exception. Gerald Gulotta, one of Eva’s Pratt Institute design students, traveled to Monmouth to collaborate with her to develop patterns. During the summer months, Eva’s children John and Jeannie stayed there and helped with patterns, too. There was much fun and experimentation during the process. Many of the patterns initially were created using a potato stamp method… later translated to rubber stamps for production. Playful and abstract, and a standout among the fifteen patterns, Eva described the dancing creatures in her Pals pattern as “turnip people!”
As was customary at Western Stoneware, Eva paid for the tooling and retained ownership of the dinnerware shapes and slip-cast molds, while the company retained rights to the patterns and production. Because she had a stake in Fine Stoneware’s success, Eva distributed the line through her own Eva Zeisel Associates.
Eva had put her heart and soul into the design of this dinnerware, and when it was introduced at trade shows and promoted in 1953, it met with high praise. Many department stores placed substantial orders and with the line in full production, success seemed to be eminent. However, because of continued problems with a downturn in orders for its other products, Western Stoneware laid off workers. As was customary with union labor rules, the youngest workers with the least seniority were the first to go. These were the workers who Eva had trained to decorate her Fine Stoneware dinnerware. Despite pleas from Eva and Western Stoneware, the union would not budge on its rules of who would be laid off. A strike ensued and the factory closed. By the time the factory reopened with new owners, the special kiln used to make Fine Stoneware had been destroyed in a fire.
Since Eva owned the rights to this line of dinnerware, she would make two more attempts to revive the line: in 1957 with Hollydale Pottery in California and again in 1964 with Nihon Koshitsu Toki Company in Japan (which I’ll show in tomorrow’s coffee cup post).
Modern with a link to folk traditions, beautiful and fun, Eva Zeisel Fine Stoneware from Monmouth was unique and comfortably familiar at the same time. It was the dinnerware that Eva kept in her kitchen cabinets and used in her own home.

The brief for the design was to open up the spaces to give a larger, brighter feel to the room. It is a good size for a family house but was under utilised and had intrusive storage areas.
Mixing contemporary with family practicality was essential, as was the use of natural materials to give a dominant 'renovated' ambience. The use of cutting edge fitments and electronics adds to the enjoyment of the room and the infinitely variable lighting effects allows for a very relaxing showering/bathing experience.
Natural slate tiles in random pattern for the floor and square on the walls.
Plantation shutters over the window are visually very effective in a south facing aspect, from inside and out.
The cupboard in the far left corner hides one of the house's central heating boilers with a 'false' set of opening doors for access and maintenance.
Set in beneath the boiler is a recess that is tiled level with the plinth edges and has smoked mirrors on all three sides. This is lit by the LED rope and provides a display area and an illusion of infiniti.
The cupboard over the WC (WC out of view at end of bath) is used for safe storage of cleaning products and the vast amount of toilet paper required to keep the bathrooms stocked to cope with two teenaged sons.
Generously hosted by Greenwich Co-operative Development Agency, Paul Rhodes of the eponymous artisan bakery and his head baker Yann Legallais kindly gave up their day to pass bread making skills on to thirteen would-be bakers from public sector kitchens. Tracey Simmons from Pabulum Catering then spoke about the practicalities of Real Bread in a public sector catering situation.
My dad is the father of practicality. He takes normal everyday objects and uses them for entertainment - like sledding down the hill.
Of course, if you think about it even for a second, the ship is all design and not at all practical. A rocket needs no wings, and particularly not wings such as these, which seem to owe more to paintings of birds or angels, than to aeronautical practicalities; and note that though both wings are flat, the one on the right appears to be a half-roll, though that is an optical illusion. Then too, the cluster of thrusters at the back are quite silly as a rocket design, since they divide the thrust unnecessarily, and the heat of any one of them would damage or destroy any other one. Nope, this is pure Buck Rogers design, though in defense of the artist, we could point out that rockets were not so familiar in 1936 as they would have been even a scant ten years later.

This attractively styled compact saloon is based on the Peugeot 301 (itself based on the 208 sub-compact). Although it was originally served only in markets such as Turkey, Algeria, and Poland, it eventually found its way to markets such as France and Spain that traditionally preferred hatchbacks over saloons. Although I do also prefer the practicality of the hatchback, the C-Elysée is attractive enough to warrant a second look.
traditionally, one hosts a kräftskiva in august (when in the old days it was the only time of year in which fishing for crayfish was permitted)... but this year, for reasons of practicality, the party was held in copenhagen in july in our tiny little apartment.
of course, the crayfish party is all about eating crayfish, and one enjoys many of them, the red devils, as one might call them. sloppy little creatures - you eat all of it and make a big mess of things.
and one drinks. one drinks several kinds of snaps (akvavit), chasing it down with pilsener.
and one sings. one sings a lot. there are songs about the crayfish, there are songs about the akvavit, songs about regret, songs about longing, and silly songs. many silly songs.
and one makes silly hats.
and one has to wear red (in honour of the crayfish).
and when scandinavians get together, they normally make fun of each other.
mostly, they make fun of the finns. yes, our brethren who dominate the world of mobile phone technology... soon, they'll be making fun of us. well, they already do.
this particular crayfish party is a humble gathering on a late evening in copenhagen. we started at 8 in the evening and the last one did not go home until 7 the next morning.
Fill in the blanks.
ok, there are easier ways to fill in an online crossword but in the name of fun not practicality and if you are bored you can click on "add note" to complete. Good luck ...

Semi-circular portico
This space introduced the rooms of the master's southern apartment and its semi-circular form functioned to connect the various rooms that it opened onto. As is often the case in the villa, practicality is not detached from architectural precision: the little courtyard was enriched with a fountain and a nymphaeum that provided cool air and a constant supply of water.

St Geneviève is the patron saint of Paris. She lived in the 5th century and was renowned for her piety. She persuaded the people of Paris not to flee when attack by the Hun army seemed imminent (she was proved correct when instead the army instead attacked Orléans). Miracles were attributed to St Geneviève after her death.

Hello everyone. Yesterday was a gray day, the sky was overcast and oppressive, but I went out into the garden to take some shoots with the iris, which soon wither. I have no peace with the font to choose for my signature, I cannot find in any way a good compromise between practicality and aesthetics. Also, I don't understand why my flickr buddy icon is gone and I cannot replace all.

The Ford Tri-Motor, affectionately known as the "Tin Goose," was the largest civil aircraft in America when it started passenger service on August 2, 1926, with Stout Air Services. The aircraft's all-metal, corrugated aluminum construction and the prestigious Ford name made it immediately popular with passengers and airline operators. Noisy but reliable, the Ford played a major role in convincing the public of the safety and practicality of air travel.
The 5-AT, a more powerful version of the earlier 4-AT, was powered by three Pratt & Whitney Wasp radial engines and entered service in 1928.
The Museum's Ford Tri-Motor was restored by American Airlines.

Well, it's been a while!
There's been far too much going on, not bad - just busy, but flickr has had to take a back seat, which isn't a bad thing every now and then. Anyway, I'm in Barcelona at the moment (again), so I offer a set of images from La Catedral, a vast soaring edifice in the old (medieval) city. The astute amongst you will notice that these are digital. No I haven't moved away from film, I'm still shooting it, plenty of it in fact, but the film shots are likely to be some time away because of the practicalities involved. So you'll just have to make do with nice conventional digi shots for now. (Although I am working on less conventional digi shots too! ;)
I know I owe loads of flickr/emails. I'm working on it.
More than a scarf, this beautiful multicolour piece made with our premium Oeko-tex certified bamboo is an absolute wardrobe essential. Versatile and handy, practical and stylish. Wear around your neck in ‘traditional’ scarf form and let the siddhi scarf keep you warm and cozy, yet lightweight enough to wear indoors too. Long enough to wear as a wrap shirt over a tank or t-shirt, criss crossed and tucked into pants this scarf adds interest and practicality to any basic outfit. Another popular option is to wear as a shawl post yoga or stepping out of the house for a quick errand. As a head scarf, shoulder cover or stylish wrap, the Siddhi scarf is a 5 panelled multi colour multi purpose accessory to spice up your wardrobe. Available in two different colour palettes to suit any outfit.
Another local registered beauty - I always get a little kick of joy when I come across cars that have been based in the local area for its life, as they tend to display signs of original ownership - there's every chance that this came from Cumnor Hill which is still a Saab dealer. I was lucky enough to own one of these a few years back and can't think of anything major that I disliked about it. Large 2 door saloons with no performance gains are quite unusual these days - the market for such cars are virtually extinct. I'd imagine the lack of practicality of rear doors being a major drawback but I believe one of the major selling points for 2 door saabs when new would have been the lower price and the bonus of torsional strength of not having those rear doors.
The diversity of winter headgear provides a source of endlessly fascinating subject matter for a fashion-observant street photographer.
The conclusion one can only draw is that, overall, practicality dominates over style.

THE BMW ISETTA
Popular during the 1950s and 1960s, the diminutive 'bubble car' or 'cabin scooter' is currently enjoying a revival of interest - not surprisingly given the congested state of today's urban roads. Nowadays though, the Bubble's attraction has just as much to do with fashion as practicality. One of the more successful designs of the cabin scooter's heyday was the BMW Isetta, a design the German firm manufactured under license from its Italian originator Iso. The name means 'little Iso'. Renzo Rivoltas Iso was not selling well in its native Italy, faced with stiff competition from the FIAT 500 and 600, and it would be left to BMW to fully exploit the design's potential.
Although at first glance a three-wheeler, the German-built Isetta used a pair of closely spaced wheels at the rear and was powered by a BMW single-cylinder four-stroke motorcycle engine of 247cc, replacing the original's noisy two-stroke motor. The coachwork of early examples featured a side-hinged single door at the front, roll-top sunroof, and fixed side windows, while the steering wheel and dashboard were attached to the door to facilitate entry. The two-seater Isettas most popular accessory, understandably so given the limited interior space, was a small luggage rack mounted at the rear. Later (1957-onwards) models incorporated sliding side windows for better ventilation. These improved models displaced 297cc, and the 'big' Isetta 300 was reckoned capable of 65mph and 55mpg. Approximately 162,000 Isetta's had been made by the time production ceased in 1962.
THE MOTORCAR OFFERED
The BMW Isetta 300 is considered to be one of the most iconic 'bubblecars' of its era. This particular Isetta is an extraordinary example featuring a complete restoration by who many believe is the best in the business. 501305 was sent to Woodstock, Georgia so that Werner Schwark from Isettas R US can perform one of his world class restorations. A very complete, low-mileage and matching numbers candidate was chosen; shortly thereafter the restoration was performed in 2018-2019 and finished in its original color combination. Since completion, only 17 miles have been recorded on the odometer. The car is equipped with a rear luggage rack, air vents and stylish Coco mats. Accompanied by its file, rear basket, as well some documentation of the restoration, this charming microcar is sure to provide its next custodian with enjoyment.
As this writer can testify, an Isetta provides enjoyment both for its driver and those that you pass on the road. This is a great example with which to experience this 'bubble' car legend.

Also in the Solihull Shopping Centre, Tesla cars were displaying their latest Model S, though I think those kids should save up for the model in 10 years time if they want to drive one legally!
The Tesla Model S is being marked as one of the world's first electric executive/sports cars. Designed by Franz von Holzhausen, and powered by a 416hp Three-Phase induction motor, the Tesla Model S combines sweet efficiency and environmental consideration, with a top of the range, fully equipped interior, including Bluetooth Stereos, Electric Windows, Leather Seats, Wood Trim, all the luxuries of a comparable Mercedes or BMW.
The world of electric cars has come a long way since the days of the horrendously bad Gee-Whizz and its complete lack of safety, space, efficiency, speed, comfort, reliability and range. The Model S has a range of 265 miles, although it is argued this has been somewhat capped by the company. The car is incredibly safe too, gaining 5* results across the Euro NCAP safety rating. It's also sublimely styled, looking very modern and sleek. However, at £50,000 it's somewhat pricey, especially when you can get a comparable Nissan Leaf with just as much practicality for around £15 to £20,000.
Overall though, the Model S is a promising car, and a clear sign that the concept of the electric auto isn't just a flash in the pan or dead-end technology.
Porsche is presenting the Panamera Sport Turismo concept car to show how amazingly intelligent and efficient drive technology might look in the design language of tomorrow. The Sport Turismo unites the next generation hybrid drive with new ideas for an evolutionary, sporty body concept; it combines Porsche performance with comprehensive everyday practicality.
Body: sports appeal and functionality in further developed design
The body concept of the Panamera Sport Turismo is an outlook on a possible Porsche sports car of tomorrow: The overhangs are short, and the boot lid is large – both sporty and functional. The concept car combines the dimensions of a premium vehicle with the interior comfort of the luxury class. The Sport Turismo is 1,990 mm wide, a low 1,401 mm in height and 4,950 mm long. Its direction indicators and sidelights are integrated in C-shaped lighting units – known as C-Blades – mounted in the large air inlets at the front end. Together with four-point LED headlights in an innovative design, they define the front end appearance of the concept car.
The smooth and taut exterior skin is not interrupted by add-on parts – there are no con-ventional exterior mirrors. In their place, the Sport Turismo has two cameras mounted in the side air outlets whose images are shown on the displays in the cockpit. The rear body has been completely reshaped, yet it retains all of the characteristics of a Porsche. The rear lights in LED technology and the tail-light panel with the “Porsche” badge are sculpted in three dimensions, and the brake light is positioned between the four-point LED rear lights. Forming the roof termination is an adaptive carbon rear spoiler that produces improved downforce.
The new Liquid Metal Blue colour gives the concept car a surface that resembles liquid metal and highlights its contours and design lines more distinctly. The wheels in dual-spoke design have a bi-colour look, and the brake callipers are painted Acid Green. The hub locks of the wheels recall the origins of every Porsche – which is motorsport. “e-hybrid” badges on the sides refer to the car’s drive concept, while the name “Sport Turismo” at the rear, framed in the same Acid Green colour, emphasises the car’s concept character. The milled aluminium battery housing is mounted under the boot floor, which is made of electrochromatic glass and reveals a view of the energy source illuminated in Acid Green at the press of a button.

It was a companion to this model that set the steam locomotive speed record before the second world war, a record which stands to this day. Such beautiful lines, a marriage of power and grace and practicality with romance, when long distance travel was an adventure and not just a chore of sitting in an overpriced seat with late-running trains and rip off prices at the buffet car. Imagine being back in the 30s and roaring down from Scotland to London behind one of these iron dragons.

Six years ago on August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall in Southeast Louisiana.
From "The New Yorker":
"Through the story of one man’s experience after Hurricane Katrina, Eggers draws an indelible picture of Bush-era crisis management. Abdulrahman Zeitoun, a successful Syrian-born painting contractor, decides to stay in New Orleans and protect his property while his family flees. After the levees break, he uses a small canoe to rescue people, before being arrested by an armed squad and swept powerlessly into a vortex of bureaucratic brutality. When a guard accuses him of being a member of Al Qaeda, he sees that race and culture may explain his predicament. Eggers, compiling his account from interviews, sensibly resists rhetorical grandstanding, letting injustices speak for themselves. His skill is most evident in how closely he involves the reader in Zeitoun’s thoughts. Thrown into one of a series of wire cages, Zeitoun speculates, with a contractor’s practicality, that construction of his prison must have begun within a day or so of the hurricane. "
