The art of viewing gives helpful hints on how to best out of your new electronic hearth. Love the jaunty angle on the standard lamp. Note Pipe and tea in evidence, just out of shot, slipper all round. The fourth person is this time taking a photo of the scene.

....or why my brain hurts! The bottle on the left is filled with air at the same pressure inside and out at Refugio Amazonas, about 200m ASL. The one on the right was sealed with air at the pressure at Cusco, about 3400m ASL, and then carried down to Refugio Amazonas. The reduced volume gives you some idea of just how much of what you take for granted is missing as you get higher. Simple, but effective demo.

I modified the Popover dress in several ways. First,I used knits to make it flowy and comfortable. I sized it up a little for my 10 year old, and both lengthened it and added a flounce to make it a maxi dress. I omitted the ties, and made fitted straps with a wooden button. I left the raw edges of the hem and flounce exposed and put a little of the grey from the yoke into the flounce seam, for fun.

With Darrell starting a new job, I got him some Dr. Scholl's shoes and a new alarm clock... both of which he needed.

For the Sigma 150-600 C group page. Here's a nearly full resolution photo to give anyone who's interested a look at the resolving power of this lens at 600mm. Do note that this photo was taken hand-held on a crop-sensor camera in suboptimal lighting, so Sigma reps themselves would probably be able to show you something better--exactly what the lens is capable of instead of what one might expect under typical shooting circumstances. If they have a full-res example photo on their website, have a look, but I didn't see one. Although this photo isn't bad at all, I'm not sure it quite lives up to the MTF chart for this lens on the Sigma website.

A few days after Christmas 1963, Texas State Senator Don Kennard received a call from a customs agent informing him that his friend Bill Newbold, a State Department information officer in Cambodia, had sent him a baby elephant. The elephant was in San Francisco, and a $1,400 shipping charge was due. The elephant was to remain in quarantine for 10 days at an additional cost of $38 per day. Unable to contact Newbold, Kennard called customs in San Francisco for more information, but no record of a baby elephant was found. A return call from San Francisco informed Kennard that the elephant had been located and did not have to remain in quarantine after all, as only hooved animals had to be quarantined. The elephant was on its way to Texas. Kennard, trying to raise the money to pay for the shipping, planned to give the elephant to the Fort Worth Zoo. When the elephant crate arrived at Kennard’s home, it contained a burro compliments of Rep. Jim Wright and zoo director Lawrence Curtis. Wright hatched the plan after overhearing Kennard casually mention to Newbold, who had previously sent a tiger to the Fort Worth Zoo, that he should send an elephant sometime.

After the joke became public, Wright began searching for an elephant for the Fort Worth Zoo. Arrangements were made through the U.S. Consul General to accept the gift of an infant pachyderm offered to the children of the United States by the three children of the Rajah of Kollengode, Kerala, India. Baby elephant Shanti is pictured here on April 5, 1964, with Forest Park Zoo director Lawrence Curtis and the Rajah's son, Vasadeva Varma, who accompanied the elephant to her new home.

PATRICK AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. – Soldiers from Headquarters & Headquarters Company, 143d Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), demonstrated the Army Reserve’s commitment to be the most capable, combat ready and lethal federal Reserve force in U.S. history during a field training event conducted April 8, 2017, at Patrick Air Force Base, Fla.

“America’s armed forces look to the Army Reserve to provide quick access to trained and ready forces that our active duty partners need to initiate, sustain and prevail in major operations,” said 1st Lt. Jonathan R. Clark, company commander, HHC, 143d ESC. “The 143d [ESC] supports this critical role by conducting immersive and engaging Battle Assemblies that test our capabilities at the individual Soldier level.”

Approximately 300 Soldiers demonstrated their marksmanship skills during a weapons qualification event at Patrick AFB’s Combat Arms Training Facility. The 143d ESC partnered with the U.S. Air Force 45th Space Wing to use this $8.5 million facility to train and qualify the troops with the M9 Pistol, M4 Carbine, M16 Rifle and the M249 light machine gun.

While awaiting their turn on the firing line, the troops participated in various classes and practical exercises that enhanced their fundamentals of marksmanship, radio communications, medical care under fire and other essential skills for all Soldiers to master regardless of their rank, assignment or specialty.

“Today’s global security environment is growing in scope and complexity,” said Clark. “The Army Reserve is rapidly evolving to adapt to this ever-changing environment, and the 143d [ESC] will be better prepared to overcome complex challenges that threaten our nation by fortifying the fundamentals of a warfighting force.”

Not so practical fashion from Terry Gates

The day after Shannon's birthday we arrived in Dunedin during its annual Fringe Festival. In the crypt of the St Pauls Cathedral at Dunedin's Octogon – the center of town - we found this experimental installation. Seven small stalls (resonance chambers according to the artist, Karyn Taylor) were flooded with different light and sound frequencies, apparently meant to be aligned with the body's chakra system. Oh. My spontaneous critique was unusually loud and smelly. Or one of my chakras resonated with that yellow chamber - I'm really not sure which. And get a load of that cross-pattern tiled floor! Nuts.

Practical shooting practice in Israel. When you grow up in a country so small, your very state of mind thinks "attack" - and it can be seen really well in the technique of the guys in the practical shooting league. When they draw their weapons, it's always with crouching forward, and never with any slightest sign of the "step back" the US policemen are taught for instance.
