I was up early yesterday to pull weeds in my flower bed before it got too hot. Being that I'm seldom up at the crack of dawn, not to mention a procrastinator, I first decided to go over & see what the hayfield looked like at sunrise. The sky was not interesting, so I took some shots of the fence post with some hay bales in the bg instead. While I was there, I noticed a couple different shots that I might have to hop the fence for in the near future (at the risk of being caught trespassing)...
Taken just outside Hornby, this is the view towards the west across the Lune Valley.
It was surprisingly cold on this small hilltop, with a strong wind from the east.
Green herons are small, chunky, short-legged birds with a glossy, greenish-black cap. The wings are black, fringed with green or blue, and the legs are orange.
Compared with other herons, the green heron is difficult to see. This small, cryptic bird spends most of the daytime waiting motionless for fish to come within striking range.
Green herons are one of the few birds that have been recorded using bait to lure fish to sites. They have been seen placing bread crusts, insects or feathers on the water surface and waiting quietly nearby for prey to approach the bait.
Found this one at Lake Marian. Joe Overstreet area Osceola County, Florida.

The wire-tailed swallow is a small swallow, measuring 18 cm (7.1 in) in length. It has bright blue upperparts, bright white underparts and a chestnut cap. Immature birds lack tail wires and have dull brown (rather than chestnut) caps. The species is named for the very long filamentous outermost tail feathers, which trail behind like two wires. The sexes are similar in appearance, but the female has shorter "wires". Juveniles have a brown crown, back and tail.
