Her dress was red, black, and white, with a black velvet collar. She loved that dress. We loved her. She was a very good Nanny indeed. This photo was taken during her Wake at Demaine Funeral Home in Springfield, Virginia.
I believe this is post mortem based on the awkward feet, the clawed hand and the eyes appearing painted on. She lived 1915-1916 and her parents didn't live much longer.

Very Postmortem: Mummies and Medicine

Very Postmortem: Mummies and Medicine explores the modern scientific examination of mummies providing new insights into the conditions under which the Egyptians lived, bringing us closer to understanding who they were. The exhibition is a homecoming celebration marking the return of Irethorrou, the Fine Arts Museums’ mummy who has been on loan since 1944. CT-scans done by scientists at Stanford Medical School shed light on Irethorrou’s physical attributes and cause of death. The scans provide depth and scientific background to the exhibition and contribute to a three-dimensional “fly through” of the mummy and a forensic reconstruction of his head. The exhibition also includes a variety of ancient artifacts that date from approximately 664–525 B.C., the Late Period from the 26th Saite Dynasty.
Archaeology meets technology in VERY POSTMORTEM: Mummies and Medicine now open in Gallery 1 at the Legion of Honor Museum in San Francisco. This exhibition welcomes back to the Fine Arts Museums the mummy of Irethorrou, a priest from an important family who lived in Akhmim, Egypt around 500 B.C. Irethorrou died at a young age and was buried over 2,500 years ago. The mummy had been on long-term loan to the Haggin Museum in Stockton, California for the last 65 years. Using state of the art High Definition Volume Rendering® technology by Fovia, Inc., the exhibition reveals Irethorrou’s long held secrets through three-dimensional computed tomography (CT) scans conducted by the Stanford Medical School’s Department of Radiology and presents a forensic portrait reconstructed by the Akhmim Mummy Studies Consortium.

Some improvement. The man on the right seems to be supporting the head of the man in the middle. This may be a post mortem photo.
I did some experiments on a few damaged tintypes to see if a coating of shellac would improve the image. The testing did not go very well and I cannot recommend this on any good or important tintype. Image on the left is before the shellac and the image on the right is after the shellac coating.
