Simple P&S?

Not by a long shot. A lot of inovative thinking went into this camera. From the Flash Indicator that pops up when the camera senses too little light (and can also be puched back down to turn off the flash for back-lit photos), to the ergonomic design of the casing. It's also a very interesting blend of mechanical and electronic interfaces. And I have seen really nice results from the lens on others cameras. However, this one has seen it's last roll of film. The Foggy Corner filter is a bit gimmicy, and doesn't give consistant results, but it does make for a good lens cap. If I find another one, I'll be sure to give it a try. It would make for a good carry-around loaded with some Tri-X or T-Max. And it's one of the few P&S cameras I've seen that takes good photos on 100 speed film.

Blocked artery, post mortem. Arteries carry oxygenated blood from the heart to all tissues of the body. This artery has been blocked by atheroma, the deposition of fatty material (yellow) on the inner walls of the arteries. Post-mortem examinations, also known as autopsies, are carried out to identify a cause of death, and to assess the health of a dead person's organs.

Taken sometime before 1950....

"Photographed by G. Flower, 256 Westminster Bridge Road, at the hatters opposite Ashley's Theatre, London S."

A tin type photo found in a family photo box, I recently read an article about mourning photos or momento mori and I am not sure if this one is or not. The eyes are creepy and her pose is strange.

Ok, what made me take this picture?

Firstly I have an personal interest in the victorian mourning era and so does my Mum as this was shot in her house, which is full of victorian reproduciton and original pieces.

Secondly I am absolutley fascinated with sociology and particulary the social history of this era.

I find it amazing how conservative Victorian society was, but yet it was socially acceptable to contact the dead through Oujia sessions, to buy Egytian mummies and 'unveil' them as entertainment for friends and to take post-mortem photographs as a keepsake of loved ones lost.

I know this is a total oversimplification, but it is basis behind my reason for taking this picture, I guess to show that this picture would of been socially acceptable once upon a time......but probably wouldnt be in todays society.

Circa 1850's....

I took this in Northern California on my honeymoon. I went back there because I lived there for one summer as a 6-year-old. My friends and I used to play in this cemetery and I recall one of them noticing this stone, and we all were amazed that someone so young could be dead, so long ago. Anyway, I trace my interest in cemeteries to that event, to this place and this stone.

Blame it on Albert Rogers (this is his gravestone).

This was taken on color 35mm film and printed in my own darkroom. The original ceramic portrait looks to be faded or possibly never was in focus, and might even have been sketched over at some point. I've tried to pull it out in the scan and bring up what details are there. I have only seen a couple post mortem photos on gravestones. For it's age, I still think this is in pretty good condition...

By the way, the kid I played with most in that cemetery died at the end of that Summer. Guess you never know, do you?
