U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill, the top-ranking Democrat on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, visited the U.S.-Mexico border this week, ahead of possible Congressional action this year on border security.

 

McCaskill’s trip included:

 

Walking tour and Field Operations briefing at the Hidalgo Port of Entry

Air and marine operations overview followed by aerial and boat tour of border

Tour of the McAllen, Texas Centralized Processing Center

Tour of the McAllen, Texas Border Patrol Station

Briefings from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the U.S. Border Patrol, and other officials on border security and counter narcotics operations

Nighttime border observation with the U.S. Border Patrol

Meeting with refugees and community leaders including McAllen Mayor Jim Darling

“Touring the border gave me a firsthand look at what’s really needed to further secure our border and keep our nation safe,” said McCaskill. “This is a complex issue and I look forward to working with Congress and the Department of Homeland Security to address the challenges we face. We know that whenever we have people illegally crossing our border, it’s a security threat. So we need to make sure our border patrol has the technology they need to target all undocumented immigration. Given that many of the people crossing our border are women and children fleeing violence in Central America, we’ve also got to go after the drug cartels and gang violence in their home countries so that these families and unaccompanied children are not making the dangerous journey to our southern border.”

 

McCaskill is a longtime advocate for strengthening border security. Her efforts in 2010 led to the placement of 1,000 new border patrol agents, new unmanned aerial vehicles, improved communication equipment and more to monitor the border without adding to the deficit. In 2012, her bipartisan bill to combat illegal underground border tunnels—cosponsored by Republican Senator John McCain of Arizona—passed unanimously in the Senate and was signed into law.

 

And bipartisan, comprehensive legislation to address the country’s broken system in 2013 that McCaskill supported passed the Senate with the support of conservative Republican Senators including Marco Rubio of Florida, John McCain and Jeff Flake of Arizona, and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina. The bill was strongly supported by groups including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Missouri Farm Bureau. The bill's border security provisions would have added 20,000 enforcement agents to the U.S.-Mexico border, while financing the construction of 700 miles of border fence and aerial drones to monitor the border. Republican Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee, who helped draft the border security provisions and who supported the overall bill, described the measures as “almost overkill.”

First Up onto the Circuit was The Intermarque Silhouettes and Thease Machines are Very Quick and Built to be as Light Weight as Possible by Using a Space Frame Chassis and a Fibreglass Body.

 

Lets Find out who Qualified were and Who Managed to Take Pole Position for Race 1.

 

In First Place Securing Pole Position and The Fastest Lap was (Danny Hun) in his Ford Autoxross Fiesta ST with a Best Lap Time of 1:01.454 and a Top Speed of 70.76mph. Great Lap there Danny Really Keeping that Car on the Track and Taking a Strong Pole Position.

 

In Second Place was (Pat Kiely) in his Vauxhall Tigra with a Best Lap Time of 1:01.813 and a Top Speed of 70.35mph. Brilliant Drive there Pat Nice Work and Fantastic Second Place on the Grid for Race 1.

 

In Third Place was (Malcom Blackman) in his Vauxhall Tigra with a Best Lap Time of 1:03.883 and a Top Speed of 68.07mph. Well Done Malcom a Massive Charge to Earn that P3 Spot on the Gird Lets Hope it can be turned into a Race Win Come Race 1.

Congratulations Steve What a Brilliant Bit of Driving there in Very Wet and Dark Conditions to Beat Malcom and Take Home a Fantastically Deserved Win.

 

In Second Place was (Dave York) in his Vauxhall Tigra with a Best Lap Time of 1:01.329 and an Average Speed of 69.59mph. Amazing Work there Dave Really Pushing that Vauxhall for All it was Worth and Doing Very Well to Keep it on the Damp and Slippery Track for a Superb P2 on the Podium.

 

In Third Place was (Malcom Blackman) in his Vauxhall Tigra with a Best Lap Time of 1:01.343 and an Average Speed of 69.50mph. Well Driven there Malcom Great Drive and A Really Good Finish in P3 from an Amazing Weekend of Racing.

From the Ford Escort WRC to the Peugeot 306 and even the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 10 Each Car and Driver Have a Certain Driving Style that can Either Mean the Difference Between a Loss or a Victory on the Race Track.

In First Place Taking Pole Position and The Best Lap Was (Rod Birley) in his Ford Escort WRC with a Best Lap Time of 58.886 and a Top Speed of 73.84mph. Brilliant Drive from Birley as a Home Hero of Brands Hatch He Always Knows How to Take Almost Any Car and Get it onto Pole Position Fantastic Drive.

 

In Second Place was (Chris Basset) in his Peugeot 306 with a Best Lap Time of 1:00.040 and a Top Speed of 72.42mph. Fantastic Drive there Chris Pushing that Peugeot Hard for a Well Deserved P2 Finish Well Done.

 

In Third Place was (Nick Sutton) in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 10 with a Best Lap Time of 1:01.904 and a Top Speed of 70.24mph. Brilliant Drive there Nick Really Working Hard and Getting that Beautiful Lancer Evo into P3 on the Gird.

 

A Fantastic Qualifying Session for Tin Tops and Super Saloons with some Very Fast and Experienced Drivers in Rod Chris and Nick all Pushing their Machinery Hard and Gunning for a Victory. With Race 1 Just Around the Corner it will be Interesting to See who can Take the Victory and who can Defend their Position from the other Drivers who will no Doubt Be Ready and Waiting to Attack.

Congratulations Rod a Really Incredible Bit of Driving in those Rain Soaked Conditions to take Home a Victory that the Whole Family will be Really Proud of. Amazing Drive.

 

In Second Place was (Steve Dann) in his VW Scirocco with a Best Lap Time of 1:02.502 and an Average Speed of 57.35mph. Great Driving there from Steve Taking the Fight Right to Birley at The End and Almost Catching him for the Race Win. Non the Less a Very Well Deserved P2 Finish.

 

In Third Place was (Nick Wall) in his Renault Clio with a Best Lap Time of 1:04.877 and an Average Speed of 55.89mph. Brilliant work there Nick A Fantastic P3 Finish in Conditions that were Very Challenging Indeed.

 

What an Incredible Race this was to Witness with the Start Being Behind the Safety Car before All of the Driver put their foot down and Went for it in conditions where at Times the Spray made it Impossible to see Anything.

 

A Big Congratulations to the likes of Rod Steve and Nick who All Drove Incredibly and Really Showed Everyone who the Rain Masters were around the Indy Circuit. In First Place Taking the Win and Fastest Lap was (Rod Birley) in his Ford Escort WRC with a Best Lap Time of 1:00.960 and an Average Speed of 60.83mph. Amazing Work there Rod Driven like a True Champion and a Fantastic Home Win to Add to the Already Incredible Win Streak at Brands Hatch.

 

In Second Place was (Nick Sutton) in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 10 with a Best Lap Time of 59.429 and an Average Speed of 60.74mph. Great Drive from Nick Once Again Showing his Brave and Fantastic Skills even at Night When the Lights go Out. Well Done.

The Mini's were Up Next and After Some Incredible Racing Yesterday which Saw the Likes of Rupert Deeth Take 1st with Scott Kendall 2nd and Colin Peacock 3rd it was Going to be an Intense Battle at the Front of the Field.

 

The Likes of Endaf Owens was Also Prepared after an Engine Failure During Yesterdays Race Which Many thought would put him out of Contention for Today..........However With Some Incredible Overnight Work by Him and His Fellow Mechanics as well as a Late Night Trip to Wales and Back to Pick Up a Spare Engine, Endaf and His Dedicated Team Have Managed to Get his Car Ready for Race 2. Truly a Phenomenal Achievement. Lets Hope for Better Luck this Time.

Incredible Drive there Endaf Coming Back from Yesterday with an Engine Failure to Win the First Race of Sunday is Truly The Drive of a Champion. Incredible Work.

 

In Second Place was (Rupert Deeth) in his Mini Miglia 1293 with a Best Lap Time of 54.925 and an Average Speed of 67.72mph. Now it was Time for the Return of the Ginetta Junior Championship onto the Brands Hatch Indy Circuit and after Some Intense and Close Racing Yesterday Each Driver was Ready to Go for Victory Once Again.

 

Currently Josh Rowledge Liam Mcneilly and Max Dodds are The Top 3 Finishers from Yesterdays Race and with Another Qualifying Session Ready and Waiting Will they be able to Put themselves Back at the Front of the Grid or Will a New set of Driver work to Challenge them?

 

In First Place Taking Pole Position and The Fastest Lap was (Tom Edgar) in his GBR R Racing with a Best Lap Time of 1:05.449 and a Top Speed of 66.44mph. Congratulations Tom Taking Pole Position and Ensuring a Front Row Start. Brilliant Lap.

In First Place Taking The Pole was (Tom Edgar) in his GBR R Racing with a Best Lap Time of 1:05.453 and a Top Speed of 66.43mph. Superb Job Once Again from Tom who manages to Hold onto that All Important P1 Position. Brilliant Drive there Tom.

In Second Place was (Max Doods) in his GBR Assetto Motorsport with a Best Lap Time of 59.284 and an Average Speed of 71.21mph. Brilliant Driving from Max Pushing Himself and The Car Thought the Race to take Home a Fantastic P2 Finish.

 

In Third Place was (Liam Mcneilly) in his GBR Fox Motorsport with a Best Lap Time of 59.426 and an Average Speed of 71.12mph. Brilliant Driving Liam P3 and The Final Spot on The Podium.

In Second Place was (Aqil Alibhai) in his RSA Elite Motorsport with a Best Lap Time of 1:07.749 and an Average Speed of 45.62mph. Awesome work there Aqil Another Very Good Battle at the Front of the Field and a Great P2 Finish to End the Weekend with a Smile.

 

In Third Place was (Sonny Smith) in his GBR R Racing with a Best Lap Time of 1:07.784 and an Average Speed of 45.59mph. Congratulations Sonny P3 and a Really Superb Job Defending from the Likes of Max Behind thought the Race.

 

A Brilliant Weekend for The Ginetta Junior Championship With So Many Fantastic Drivers in the likes of Liam Aqil and Sonny as well as Max and Liam These Young Drivers are Going to do Really Well in Future Top Level Motorsport. Britcar Endurance Championship-(Race 1 Results)

 

As The Light Fell away from the Circuit The Britcar Endurance Championship made its way out onto the circuit with Lights a Blaze and a lot of Energy coming from both the Drivers and their Cars This was Going to be a Race of Endurance and Car Management thought the 45 Minutes of the Race.

With a Quick set of Warm Up Laps Over it was Time for The Brit car's to make their way out onto the Track and Get Ready for two Races of Endurance to Decide the Britcar Champion of 2021.

 

In First Place Taking the Victory was (Valluga's) Ian Humphries and Benji Hetherington in their Porsche 718 GT4 Club sport with a Best Lap Time of 50.023 and an Average Speed of 70.37mph. Congratulations both Ian and Benji a Fantastic Win in Very Tricky and Tiering Circumstances thought the 45 Minutes.

 

In Second Place was (Nial Bradley) in his BMW M3 E46 with a Best Lap Time of 50.799 and an Average Speed of 70.34mph. Brilliant work there Nial Keeping the Pressure on for both Ian and Benji at the front of the Pack. a Very Committed Drive for P2.

In Second Place was (Valluga's) Ian Humphries and Carl Cavers in their Porsche 718 GT4 Club Sport with a Best Lap Time of 57.414 and an Average Speed of 66.46mph. Great Work there by both the likes of Ian and Carl to Bring there car Home in P2. A Wonderful Way to End the Weekend and the Championship.

 

In Third Place was (Spires Motorsport's) Anton Spies in his Renault Clio Gen 4 with a Best Lap Time of 1:01.189 and an Average Speed of 64.37mph. A Very Heroic Drive from Anton Pushing His Renault Hard and Ensuring He Defends that All Important Final Spot on the Podium. Great Job.

 

What a Weekend it has been for the Britcar Endurance Championship with Many Fantastic Teams and Drivers in the Likes of (Valluga's) Ian Humphries Carl Cavers Benji Hetherington and the Likes of (Spire Motorsports) Anton Spires and Steve Rothery.

Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes, San Luis Obispo County, California

Back in October 2010 I took an Alaska Airlines flight from Washington Reagan National to Los Angeles and then on to Las Vegas. I was upgraded to a First Class window seat. It was pretty cloudy most of the way until we broke out of the clouds somewhere over Colorado. The pilot didn't make a single announcement the whole time - even when the scenery turned spectacular.

 

If you're a pilot or know what some of the photos are, please let me know.

The church was built in the 13th Century, but there are some pieces of early 12th century masonry and there is a late 12th century priest's doorway which has been moved to the organ chamber. It is possible that the masonry and the doorway were reclaimed and reused. The church also displays elements from the 15th century and some pieces from 1634 to 1635. There was probably a church in Broad Hinton in the 12th century. It was restored in 1879 to 1880 by C.E Pointing. In the 13th Century the church was called St. Mary's, and was later renamed St. Peter ad Vincula- in the 19th century. The tower was built in the 15th or early 16th century, and was built in limestone ashlar. The organ chamber (where the late 12th century Priest's doorway was moved to) was formally a chapel.

 

The chancel window probably dates from the 19th century restoration of the church. There are numerous monuments inside St. Peter's. One of the most interesting is that to Sir Thomas Wroughton. He, without his hands, is kneeling on a cushion with his wife kneeling behind him, also on a cushion, in widow's hood, with their eight children, who are also without hands, all kneeling on the frieze below. One story is that Sir Thomas found his wife reading the Bible and he took it from her and threw it into the fire. Maybe he later regretted his action and pulled the Bible out of the fire, damaging his hands? Possibly, he considered it sinful to read God's words for one's self; or was he simply infuriated to find his wife passing the time reading while there were greater issues to attend to? It is striking to find that his children's hands are missing as well. This may have been to illustrate the aphorism that a father's sins are visited on his children. Sir Thomas' wife has hands and is clutching the Bible.

 

There are many other beautiful monuments inside the church, such as a reredos of Beer stone. The Beer stone is a pale honey-coloured stone from the quarries near to the fishing village of Beer in South Devon.

 

Another monument is that to Lieutenant Colonel Francis Glanville who died fighting for the King at the battle of Bridgewater in1645. Francis was the second son of Sir John Glanville. The alabaster figure is presented in amour; above him are replicas of his sword, gauntlets, helmet and escutcheon.

 

Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington, is commemorated by his coat of arms, taken from his funeral pall in 1852 and presented to the church. The 'Iron Duke' had held one of the manors of Broad Hinton in his lifetime.

 

The parish had a chalice, a paten and two flagons, given in 1677; they were stolen from the church in 1756, but were soon recovered. Outside the church, the ground level was lowered to aid in the prevention of damp occurring in the building.

 

Rev. Robert Campbell Crokat M.A was vicar of Broad Hinton from 1895 to 1919. He was succeeded by Hugh Vaughan White, who was vicar from 1919-66.

 

The Church Registers are preserved from 1612 to the present time, but some are missing. The records for marriages are missing from 1620-5 and 1745-57. The records for burials are missing from 1678 to 1708 and 1743-57. Registers are held in the Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre at Chippenham.

Taken on our trip to London this shows the South bank of the Thames with it's crowning glory the London Eye.

 

We really enjoyed our trip on the London Eye and having two for one tickets made the ride even more enjoyable. I took this shot whilst walking accross the bridge as we were heading towards Charing Cross station.

 

I'm thinking of using this as one of my final project pieces and focussing my project on favourite places.

This is a photograph from the East of Ireland Marathon Series Marathon held at Stapelstown, Donadea, Naas, Co. Kildare, Ireland at 09:00 on Saturday 21st of September 2013. This is the first East of Ireland Marathon Series race outside of Dublin and also the first to have been run on rural roads and is race 5 of the East of Ireland Marathon Series 2013.

 

There was beautiful but warm weather in Stapelstown for the marathon which made conditions tougher than expected. The course brought runners on a loop from the village over towards Prosperous, Co. Kildare, and then back to the finish/refreshment area. The event was very well organised and whilst these races operate with a degree of self sufficiency for runners there was adequate marshalling, course marking, and refreshments available. Well done to all.

 

The East Of Ireland Marathon Series aims to make marathons affordable and convienient for the runners of Ireland. The serires organisers aim to promote marathon running and to make the process as stress free and enjoyable as possible. All courses are measured to full AAI standards and have a minimum of 10 Entrants. The marathons are self sufficent to a degree although there are limited supplies of water available on the day of the race. There will be no extra frills like chip timing and finish gantrys. However all finishing times are accurately and officially recorded. This is to keep the price down and keep the races as affordable as possible. The East of Ireland Marathon series is all inclusive and welcomes runners who are new to marathon running as well as experienced veterans.

Overall Race Summary

Participants: The East of Ireland marathon series stricly limits the number of participants. There were about 50 participants in the race today.

Weather: There was warm sunny weather for the race with competitors finding the humid conditions very tough as the race progress on around mid day. There was no real wind but a breeze which did help keep runners cool.

Course: The race started at St. Kevin's GAA and proceeded west into Stapelstown Village and reached a turnaround point which brought runners back to the starting point. This meant that runners then had to complete four complete loops of the 6.09 mile loop outlined below. This loop then proceeded directly southwards towards Prosperous but makes a sharp right turn before Properous village. This brings runners onto the Ballynafagh road and northwards back towards Stapelstown village. Runners then run down through the village (passing the finish and refreshment area) to complete the loop. The course is on traffic open country roads.

Community Integrated Care - Best Lives Possible Roadshow, held at the Point, Old Trafford, Manchester

My best friend asked me to take some photos for her save the date announcements. We are tossing around a few ideas, and I've uploaded some of the photos here.

Black Mountain Power Ponds, Mohave County, Arizona, USA

A revisit in March 2020 to this site. The site has now been cleared of trees and vegetation, returning it close to the state it would have been when operational. Due to the large amounts of asbestos, the buildings are being slowly dismantled, with the corrugated asbestos sheet being carefully removed from the roofs. The purpose of this visit was to capture the scale of the site, and record construction methods and materials as best as I could.

 

Locally known as the USAAF hospital, Ullenwood near Cheltenham in Gloucestershire was the site of the 110th General Hospital of the US Army Medical Corps in late 1944. Little other information is available.

 

A description of the camp exists - "The hospital buildings were of a uniform plan and setup and constructed of hollow tile, roofed with asbestos cement sheets. Adequate space was available for all wards, clinics, and laboratories. The quarters reserved for Officers, Nurses, and the Detachment were all of plaster board covered with tar paper and had asbestos cement roofs."

 

What remains today is a jumble of contemporary WW2 buildings, largely prefabricated concrete struts with asbestos roofs and clockwork walls that have been used for decades as household storage and small business units. The most interesting and medical related structure to remain is the covered corridor in the centre of the site that would have linked hospital wards.

I've seen enough doctored, damaged, and "fakified" butt stocks for Garands, and the scams always center around increasing value.

 

Worse still, vintage cartouched stocks are useless to me in my recreation and work. No point dragging a loosey-goosey butt stock to the range, one whose value will be attacked by tightening bedding or obscuring markings.

 

So I want to be rid of this crap, for purposes of replacing it with something I can use.

 

The Springfield GAW (ca.1944) has the look and feel of the real thing, unfooled with.

 

The "GHD" is a Winchester-marked piece, and the pistol grip shape seems weird to me. Still, it's not a terrible hunk of wood, and has what seems to be a WW2 SA butt plate and ferrule, swivel, and screws are intact.

 

Anyway, I'll be damned if I'll waste a lot of time research these, or especially, de-staining the "GAW", when it has no functionality for me. Fortuitously, I have some flawless wood that I can bed to perform suitably, so I'll just dispose of these to someone who wants them.

Part of my trip preparation involves as much background reading as possible which naturally is mainly architectural history with enough of a framework of general history. I don’t have much time to do it this time... but reading the introduction to Simon Jenkins wonderful book on Wales, churches, castles and houses plus the Lonely Planet history section tonight is starting the process.

 

The other part is to get a feel for sketching - in 2007 I studied copied Fabrice Moireau’s beautiful sketches of Paris for months beforehand. At the moment I am getting a feel for Welsh buildings and the colour of the stone. I often find when I go to Scotland, it takes a day or two for my Australian eyes (used to bright light) to the muted tones of the northern light and subtle variations of brown tones.

So... Since my sketch last night I have been thinking of two things

-explore mixing browns rather than rely on the earth tone paint to get my life for the mid brown

-leave more white space to enliven the page

 

So that is what I tried tonight... More exploration to come in coming weeks

The street and surrounding properties were riddled and piled with debris from the blast. Neighbouring homes had windows blown in from the force of the explosion.

  

Propane tanks are thought to be the possible cause of the mayhem, but can't be confirmed at this point. The residence has not been connected to natural gas for some time, but can't be ruled out as a possible cause.

  

Autorities confirmed that one person had been taken to hospital with unknown injuries.

A possible storm is downing upon me. I might have to take shelter after this photo.

Spheres - This one is going to be difficult. It probably won't be too hard to find something spherical to photograph, but your job is to somehow make it interesting. No points for cleverness...the thing you photograph should actually LOOK like a sphere in the photo (i.e. don't shoot the ground and say the Earth is a sphere; don't shoot the sun or the moon which look like circles). Also, no eyeballs.

 

I took Savanah out today to get some shots of bubbles for my Sphere assignment. Not sure if I'm going to go with bubbles for spheres but they were my first thought when I read the assignment, plus, she loves bubbles and we have such fun with them.

Mission Possible-Mending Kids Annual Gala

Possible the most cursed photographs I've taken in a long, long time.

 

So Hentai Woody has been in my photos since 2017 when I bought him from some dude in the parking lot of a mall in Richmond, BC. Since then, he's taken some trips with me, as well as taken a beating.

 

The Kaiiyodo Revoltech Woody 1.5 is worthy upgrade to the original set. It's not a new version, but rather it's the first one with some cosmetic updates and a slew of new accessories in the form of the Green Alien and several new faces.

 

Keep in mind that the MSRP on this one is also significantly higher than the first one, which was reissued a few years back.

 

Cosmetically, it's a bit subtle but the short version is that the skin is no longer glossy - it's a matte flesh tone (I don't think the flesh colour is painted) with some better rouge applied for the cheeks. Bandana is a darker red. Buttons are silver as opposed to flat grey. I think the pants are about the same colour but the boots are a lighter brown - I think this colour extends to the hat too.

 

One change I wasn't expecting is that unlike the Revoltech of yesteryear, the joints on the new Woody aren't ratcheting - they're friction based like with Figma and Figuarts. That means that you'll be able to get new Woody to pose a bit easier, and with less restriction, though the joints aren't exactly as smooth as the other two. No articulation was lost, but it just seems to take more effort to get things into position.

 

Speaking of smooth, I noticed swapping out pieces wasn't as easy as with the old figure. Now part of that is due to play wear I'm sure as well as questionable QC on the part of Kaiyodo. But the other part of it is, I feel, mould degradation and Kaiyodo having to do things to get it back into shipshape again.

 

Interestingly, the peg hole sizes have all changed. The new hands won't work on the old body, and I noticed I couldn't get Lenny the Binoculars on the new set to fit in the hand of the old one (there's a peg to slot it in).

 

The new selection of faces is nice and gives me the option of doing some interesting things (though let's be real - we both know which face is going to stay on.. but the option is there.). All faces still retain the ability to adjust the eyes which, as always, adds to the fun of photographing Woody.

 

The Green Alien is semi articulated. Shoulders and neck. It's nice but really won't do much for me unless Hentai Woody 2.0 needs a Serf to do some work.

 

Paint and Build are pretty much what you'd expect for a Kaiyodo product. They've never really been known for being top of the line from that regard, but they're usually competent. So long as we don't revisit the paint work of that IM3 Midas, we'll be OK.
