on the upper deck of the Ponte Luís I.

The Ponte Luís I was inaugurated in 1886 and designed by Théophile Seyrig, the former partner of Gustave Eiffel. In 2003 the Ponte do Infante was opened as replacement for the road traffic on the upper deck. The Ponte Luís I got a major overhaul and the upper deck is since 2005 used by the trams of the "Metro do Porto". Pedestrians are allowed to use the upper deck, but all road traffic is abandoned. The lower deck is still used by road traffic.

The Ponte Luís I, often called the Ponte Dom Luís, connects the central parts of Porto and VN de Gaia. This bridge with two decks was built in the 1880's as successor of the from 1843 dating Ponte Pensil. The design was by Téofile Seyrig, who with Gustave Eiffel had founded in 1869 the Eiffel & Cie Company. When still in partnership with Eiffel, Seyrig had designed the Ponte Maria Pia railway bridge a few kilometres upstream across the Douro, which was built in 1876-1877 by Eiffel & Cie. After a dispute Seyrig left Eiffel & Cie in 1879 and joined the Willebroeck company. For building the Ponte Luís I the design of Seyrig was preferred above those of Eiffel and four other competitors. The Ponte Luís I was built by the Willebroeck company and opened in 1886.

Choosing to upload this has made me sick for Portugal. Silly, isn't it? The memories this evokes are... well,.... I am 99.999% sure this was the last photo I took during my trip to Portugal last year (the EXIF data says March 31, 2008, and that sounds right). Don't ask me why I never uploaded it before. I couldn't tell you.

This was taken on the last night of my last visit. Sara and I had spent the early part of the evening taking photos of different things here along the River Douro before going to a very small family-owned restaurant in which I tried, for the very first time, octopus! I was, I'll admit, a little hesitant at first, but every time I've gone to Portugal I've made a point to eat nothing but Portuguese fare. I don't visit a foreign country just to make a point of eating foods I'm familiar with. I want to try local foods, drink local drinks. Can you say caipiroska? After eating that absolutely delicious octopus, we went out and, although I'd seen this before, I wanted to take another photograph. I was using my PowerShot S3 IS, and the stone wall on which I had placed my camera kept getting in the frame (this is when something like a tabletop tripod or a GorillaPod would've been helpful). So, with Sara's help, a very make-shift "tripod" was constructed so that the lens was raised. I positioned the camera to get the composition just as I wanted it, I set the timer on the camera so that any shake induced by pressing the shutter would have time to dissipate, and then I took this photo. I'm glad I did, too. This was by far the best photograph I took during that visit.

June cannot get here soon enough! I want to go to Portugal again!

The bridge you see in this photograph is the Ponte Dom Luís and it connects Porto, on the north side (to the camera's left) of the River Douro, with Vila Nova de Gaia, on the south side. The building is the Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar (a former convent, as noted by the word "Mosteiro", meaning "monastery").

A little stroll through the port distilleries, and along the southbank of the river Duoro offered some interesting night shots, such as this one on the Ponte Dom Luis.

Hello Good-bye, by The Beatles

This may or may not be my last upload until I return to the U.S. I'm not sure. I'm here Monday, then I will be leaving late Tuesday morning. I have more that I will likely upload once I return, though. I took a LOT of photographs while here.

I hate this part. I hate having to leave any place where I've gone on vacation. I can always think of places I'd like to see again, places I photographed where I'd like to try something different with the camera, places I didn't see that I'd still like to see, etc. The leaving is bad enough, but when you're having to say "good-bye" to someone you care about so much, and not even saying "good-bye," just saying, "see you soon" is still painful. I took a photo like this on the last night of my visit to Portugal last year. This wasn't taken during my last night here, but it seems strange that this could very well be the last photo I upload during this trip.

Some may be wondering why I've not posted any photos of Sara. Well, there are a couple of photos of her here in my stream, and I'm lucky to be alive after having posted them, too. She hates having her photo taken, let alone the idea that they could be uploaded.

[Note from Sara: Gary thinks he's leaving, but he's not. I won't let him. :P :D]
