seen from Serra do Pilar in VN de Gaia. This bridge was deigned by Theophile Seyrig and building started in 1881. The upper deck was inaugurated in 1886, the lower deck in 1888. From 1905 until 1959 the upper deck was crossed by trams. In 2003 the traffic was diverted to a new bridge several hundreds of meters upstream and the upper deck was closed. During the years 2003-2005 the bridge got a major overhaul and the upper deck was widened to facilitate working of the new light-rail vehicles. Since 2005 the upper deck is the domain of the trams of the Metro do Porto and pedestrians.

with a pair of Eurotrams. The supports of the overhead wires are similar to the ones of the old trams and later the trolley-buses, except that the new ones are wider. The upper deck of the bridge and the new trams are wider too.

Birds flying high you know how I feel
Sun in the sky you know how I feel
Breeze driftin' on by you know how I feel
It's a new dawn
It's a new day
It's a new life
For me
It's a new dawn
It's a new day
It's a new life
For me
And I'm feeling good
Fish in the sea you know how I feel
River running free you know how I feel
Blossom on the tree you know how I feel
It's a new dawn
It's a new day
It's a new life
For me
And I'm feeling good
Dragonfly out in the sun you know what I mean, don't you know
Butterflies all havin' fun you know what I mean
Sleep in peace when day is done
That's what I mean
And this old world is a new world
And a bold world
For me
Stars when you shine you know how I feel
Scent of the pine you know how I feel
Oh freedom is mine
And I know how I feel
It's a new dawn
It's a new day
It's a new life
For me,
...and I'm feeling good
The Ponte Luís I, often called the Ponte Dom Luís, connects the central parts of Porto and VN de Gaia. This bridge with two decks was built in the 1880's as successor of the from 1843 dating Ponte Pensil. The design was by Téofile Seyrig, who with Gustave Eiffel had founded in 1869 the Eiffel & Cie Company. When still in partnership with Eiffel, Seyrig had designed the Ponte Maria Pia railway bridge a few kilometres upstream across the Douro, which was built in 1876-1877 by Eiffel & Cie. After a dispute Seyrig left Eiffel & Cie in 1879 and joined the Willebroeck company. For building the Ponte Luís I the design of Seyrig was preferred above those of Eiffel and four other competitors. The Ponte Luís I was built by the Willebroeck company and opened in 1886.

At some point I just had to go back to the same place where I had taken a similar photograph during my last trip, but take a couple of shots to do something a little different.

A couple of Eurotrams heading for Vila Nova de Gaia. The Ponte Luís I was inaugurated in 1886 and designed by Théophile Seyrig, the former partner of Gustave Eiffel. From 1905 until 1959 electric trams did run on the upper deck of the bridge. In 2003 the Ponte do Infante, which can be seen in the background, was opened as replacement for the road traffic on the upper deck. The Ponte Luís I got a major overhaul and the upper deck is since 2005 used by the trams of the "Metro do Porto". Pedestrians are allowed to use the upper deck, but all road traffic is abandoned. Behind the Ponte do Infante part of the Ponte Maria Pia can be seen. This is a railway bridge in use from 1877 until 1991 and desingned by Théophile Seyrig when he was still the partner of Eiffel. Because of that this bridge is now often said to be a design of Eiffel.

Playing with the settings on my camera after dinner in one of the tourist traps on the banks of the river douro I came away with this shot. Fireworks setting on Canon Powershot can do more than fireworks.
Our monkfish dish was for 2 people according to the menu but would have fed 4. I was delicious. Don't order Chateaubriand though. Unless you like overcooked beef covered in a mayonaise sauce...
