The columns are the remnents of the Ponte Pênsil, a suspension bridge that crossed the river since 1843 until it was replaced by the Ponte Luís I in 1887. Part of the top-deck and the arch of the Ponte Luís I are in the background.

The Ponte Luís I was inaugurated in 1886 and designed by Théophile Seyrig, the former partner of Gustave Eiffel. In 2003 the Ponte do Infante was opened as replacement for the road traffic on the upper deck. The Ponte Luís I got a major overhaul and the upper deck is since 2005 used by the trams of the "Metro do Porto". Pedestrians are allowed to use the upper deck, but all road traffic is abandoned. The lower deck is still used by road traffic.

This bridge is made by the same Eiffel who made the Eiffel Tower in Paris

The tram is leaving the bridge across the river Douro to enter the tunnel beneath the city centre.

An Eurotram just did leave the Ponte Luís I and now enters the tunnel beneath the city centre.
