The Ponte Luís I, often called the Ponte Dom Luís, connects the central parts of Porto and VN de Gaia. Although not built for the trams, it had and has a major role in the public transport of Porto and is one of the most important landmarks of the city. This bridge with two decks was built in the 1880’s as successor of the from 1843 dating Ponte Pensil. The design was by Téofile Seyrig, who with Gustave Eiffel had founded in 1869 the Eiffel & Cie Company. When still in partnership with Eiffel, Seyrig had designed the Ponte Maria Pia railway bridge a few kilometres upstream across the Douro, which was built in 1876-1877 by Eiffel & Cie. After a dispute Seyrig left Eiffel & Cie in 1879 and joined the Willebroeck company. For building the Ponte Luís I the design of Seyrig (Willebroeck) was preferred above those of Eiffel and four other competitors. The Ponte Luís I was opened in 1886.

The Luís I Bridge (Ponte Dom Luís I) is a metal arch bridge that spans the Douro River between the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia in Portugal. At the time of construction its span of 172 m was the longest of its type in the world. The top deck is now occupied by Line D of the Metro do Porto and a pedestrian walkway.

Around The World The Trip Begins With A Kiss (On Black)
— Roam, by B-52s
Take it hip to hip rock it through the wilderness
Around the world the trip begins with a kiss
Roam if you want to
Roam around the world
Roam if you want to
Without anything but the love we feel
Skip the air-strip to the sunset yeah
Ride the arrow to the target
Take it hip to hip rock it through the wilderness
Around the world the trip begins with a kiss
Roam if you want to
Roam around the world
Roam if you want to
Without anything but the love we feel
Fly the great big sky see the great big sea
Kick through continents bustin' boundaries
Take it hip to hip rock it through the wilderness
Around the world the trip begins with a kiss

A different perspective of Ponte Dom Luís.
Roam if you want to. There aren't many better ways to enjoy life. I am a modern nomad, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

POSTSCRIPT: I'm back from Portugal, obviously, although I've still some photos from my trip that I've yet to upload. As usually happens when I go to Portugal, I came back a few pounds lighter. Not much, mind. Five pounds (about 2,5 kilos).
My 22-inch wide-screen monitor is currently feeling like a complete monster after being restricted to the 12-inch screen of my laptop. I'm still getting settled in, obviously, after the return flight (which was very smooth, with very little turbulence at all). I've got a pile of mail I've still got to go through, and there are a handful of things that I need to make a priority right away: car insurance, which is due; doctor's appointment for re-eval and renewal of psoriasis medication; doctor's appointment and blood tests for re-eval and renewal of thyroid medication; apply for unemployment; and one or two other things that aren't coming to mind at the moment. (One other thing I want to do, as well, is to work on catching up on all the photos that you, my contacts, have uploaded in my absence. I was able to keep up with a few, but not with everyone.)
Got a "last chance" notification to register for my high school reuinion, which is July 16-19 and will be held in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. I have until July 10 to make up my mind on that. It would be nice to see some old friends from my high school days in England again, most of whom I haven't seen for mumblety-mumble years, as well as some new friends I've made with folk who attended the same school before I did. It's not the school from which I graduated, but I attended it during my Freshman to Junior years so I consider it my school.
I'm missing Portugal, obviously. A LOT! But I'm feeling very refreshed and ready to take on the world anew.

Here, various wine boats are moored up on the riverbank, bearing iconic logos of the traditional port distilleries, whose lodges lie just behind.
At night, the Ponte Dom Luis is brightly lit, casting an almost magical glow over the riverside
Taken from Gaia, a panoramic of the wonderful City of Porto on a beautiful sunny day!
