Spring pollen

Taken at Auldearn Farm during Elgin Open Gardens, 2015, Western Cape, South Africa.

Watching this bee dive into a squash blossom led me to discover this information...."Pollen is used to feed baby bees. It is the only protein source for the honey bee colony. Pollen is vital for the health and productivity of a honey bee colony. Without this protein source, no young bees could be raised. And it is important to have a variety of pollen sources for the young bees. "

The succulent Kalanchoe species, popularly known as flower-of-fortune (Kalanchoe blossfeldiana), is super easy to care for. This is because it is resistant to climatic variations, does not need constant irrigation and has excellent adaptation to indoor and outdoor environments. In addition, in the same species there are variations such as the cat's ear (Kalanchoe tomentosa), the mother of thousands (Kalanchoe laetivirens), among others.

When the flowers are simple they are called Kalanchoe.

And when the flowers are folded (multiple petals) Calandivas.

Penelope, the female female broad-billed hummingbird had been going about her business, sticking her head in flowers when she unwittingly got her head dusted with purple pollen. She wears it well though. And she's doing her part as a pollinator (Does it seem weird to you that "pollen" is spelled with an 'en' but "pollinator" is spelled with an 'in'?)

Those pollen balls are so sticky, honeybees just can't manage them properly, tiny bees do much better in there.
