Euro-Tower 17/09/2017 13h11
The Euro-Tower is a 75 m high observation tower in the Europa-Park Rust. According to the principle of the gyro-tower, up to 50 people take a seat on the floor in an all-glass cabin, which then lifts up the mast of the tower and turns around the tower axis. After a few revolutions at the top of the mast, the cab goes down again. The travel time is 217 seconds, the capacity about 600 people per hour. The plant, which opened in 1983, was built by the company Intamin.

Europa-Park
Europa-Park is a theme park and the largest in Germany, and the second most popular theme park resort in Europe, following Disneyland Paris.
Europa-Park is located in Rust, in south-western Germany, between Freiburg and Strasbourg, France.
The park is home to 13 roller coasters, the oldest being Alpenexpress Enzian, a powered coaster that speeds through a diamond mine, and the newest coaster being the Ba-a-a Express, a small kiddie roller coaster. Europa-Park has very high capacity roller coasters and attractions meaning the park can accommodate up to approx. 60,000 guests per day. It counted just over 5.5 million visitors in 2015, generating an estimated total revenue of EUR 30 million per year.
Europa-Park is run by the Mack family, which have produced vehicles since 1780, circus wagons since 1880 and rollercoasters since 1921. Franz Mack (1921–2010) in 1958 took over the family firm, Mack GmbH & Co (now Mack Rides), together with his brothers. Together with his son Roland (b. 1949) he visited the USA in 1972 and was inspired to open a theme park in Germany, as an exhibition site for his company's products.
At first the park was planned to be located in Breisach. It was named "Europa-Park" after Breisach's nearby Europaweiher, a small artificial lake which commemorates a historical pilot poll in Breisach held in 1950, in which 95.6% of voters were in favour of European unification. The Breisach site was deemed unsuitable because of flooding hazard, and the project was moved some 30 km further north, where the Macks bought the park of the historical Balthasar castle in Rust. The park opened in 1975 with an area of 16 hectares. It counted 250,000 visitors in the first year, 700,000 in the second, passing the million mark in 1978.

A'Dam Toren 08/08/2023 18h35

Album on FlickR:
A'Dam Tower
The A'DAM Tower is an almost 100 meters tall tower on the banks of the IJ in the North of Amsterdam opposite Centraal Station. The tower was designed by the Dutch architect Arthur Staal in 1966 on behalf of Royal Shell. The building was therefore better known as "Shell Tower" by many Amsterdam people. It is 22 stories high.
In January 2014, it was known that this tower under the name of A'DAM to a design by Claus and Kaan Architects would be redeveloped into a combination of offices, nightlife and an observation point with a revolving restaurant. To this end, a major renovation of the facade would be necessary, replacing the typical glass window with a thin layer of gold. Since the mast has been placed on the tower it is about 100 meters high.
On May 14, 2016, the renovated A'DAM Tower was opened.
A’DAM LOOKOUT is an observation deck with an unrivalled panoramic view of Amsterdam. You’ll see the city’s historical centre, its pulsating port, the unique Dutch polder landscape and you’ll spot the famous canals which belong to the UNESCO world heritage list. Complementing the experience is a state-of-the-art interactive exhibition about Amsterdam’s history and culture. A’DAM LOOKOUT is located on top of the A’DAM Tower in Amsterdam North.

Mont Ventoux | View Point 06/07/2014 14h19
To get a good view to the North from the summit of the Mont Ventoux they have created this view point about 200 meters from the observation tower and centre ville of the Mont Ventoux. Overlooking the Drôme and Vaucluse at the same time in North East direction.
Mont Ventoux
Mont Ventoux (Ventor in Provençal) is a mountain in the Provence region of southern France, located some 20 km northeast of Carpentras, Vaucluse. On the north side, the mountain borders the Drôme département. It is the largest mountain in the region and has been nicknamed the "Beast of Provence"] the "Giant of Provence", or "The Bald Mountain". It has gained fame through its use in the Tour de France cycling race.
As the name might suggest (venteux means windy in French), it can get windy at the summit, especially with the mistral; wind speeds as high as 320 km/h have been recorded. The wind blows at 90+ km/h 240 days a year. The road over the mountain is often closed due to high winds. Especially the "col de tempêtes" ("storm pass") just before the summit, which is known for its strong winds. The real origins of the name are thought to trace back to the 1st or 2nd century AD, when it was named 'Vintur' after a Gaulish god of the summits, or 'Ven-Top', meaning "snowy peak" in the ancient Gallic language. In the 10th century, the names Mons Ventosus and Mons Ventorius appear.
Mont Ventoux, although geologically part of the Alps, is often considered to be separate from them, due to the lack of mountains of a similar height nearby. It stands alone to the north of the Luberon range, separated by the Monts de Vaucluse, and just to the east of the Dentelles de Montmirail, its foothills. The top of the mountain is bare limestone without vegetation or trees, which makes the mountain's barren peak appear from a distance to be snow-capped all year round (its snow cover actually lasts from December to April). Its isolated position overlooking the valley of the Rhône ensures that it dominates the entire region and can be seen from many miles away on a clear day.

Second Best "52 Weeks Project"
Since I have been joining the 52 Weeks Project on Flickr it has happened several times that I had to chose between two or more self portraits that week. A difficult choice. The solution is to create a set of all good alternatives. Life is full of choices and sometimes a week has too much opportunities. This is one of those alternatives, the second best. And sometimes just as good.
An afternoon well spent in la Principauté de Monaco...
Location: Viewpoint at the Place du Palais overlooking Monaco Monte Carlo and Port Hercule at altitude of 60 meters above sea level.
Reason: We spent an afternoon in Monaco the day after we hiked the Gorges du Verdon with colleagues of Thalys NL, B and F.
Monaco: Monaco, officially the Principality of Monaco (French: Principauté de Monaco), is a sovereign city-state, country and microstate but claimed by the Occitan nationalism, located on the French Riviera in Western Europe. France borders the country on three sides while the other side borders the Mediterranean Sea. Monaco has an area of 2.02 km2 and a population of about 38,400 according to the last census of 2016.
With 19,009 inhabitants per km², it is the second smallest and the most densely populated country in the world. Monaco has a land border of 5.47 km, a coastline of 3.83 km, and a width that varies between 1,700 and 349 m. The highest point in the country is a narrow pathway named Chemin des Révoires on the slopes of Mont Agel, in the Les Révoires Ward, which is 161 metres above sea level.

Bourg-Saint-Maurice 08/03/2014 16:58
A view over Bourg-Saint-Maurice in the Savoie as seen from the Chapelle Saint-Michel on an altitude of 1343 meters. Bourg-Saint-Maurice is located on an altitude of about 850 meters.
Bourg Saint-Maurice
Bourg-Saint-Maurice is part of the Paradiski ski area (425 km of slopes, 141 lifts, 239 slopes - 12 Green, 132 Blue, 66 Red, 29 Black). Although there is no skiing at this altitude, it is conveniently linked to Arc 1600 by the Arc en Ciel funicular railway and is therefore home to many budget rental properties. Unlike the other villages that make up Les Arcs, Bourg-Saint-Maurice is open all year.
Bourg is also a popular summer destination, as it offers lots of opportunity for lovers of the outdoors and watersports. There is a whitewater slalom course on the Isere river used for international canoe and kayak competitions. The course on the Isere has been host to the ICF world championships and is used by many European teams as a training course in the summer. The course is often changed by the floods that occur during the winter months.
The surrounding mountains are good for walking and mountain biking. They also are a good place for paragliding and hang gliding. Some of Les Arcs ski lifts operate during July and August to get walkers to the higher peaks and you can take mountain bikes up on these. Mountain bikes ( VTT (Vélo Tout Terrain) in French) can be hired in both Bourg and Les Arcs. Some of the high altitude restaurants open in these months, the ones at Pre st Esprit and L'Arpete have small outdoor pools.
The nearest summer glacier skiing is in Tignes (approximately 27 km from Bourg) on the Grande Motte, however due to glacial recession it is now closed at certain times of the year.

Shōdoshima is the 19th largest island in Japan, second largest in the Inland Sea. It is not far from Takamatsu (Shijkoku) and not far from Koba too (1h by ferry) so it is a good way to see the Inland see. For me I decided to go there just the day before after watching a review in my hotel. The island is about 20 km but when I arrived there I could rent a bike and cross the island easily. Bicycle is pretty safe in Japan because you can cycle on the pavement.

Lower Manhattan | Brooklyn Bridge Park 28/04/2015 11h33
This is definitely one of the beautiful view points towards Manhattan. Located in Brooklyn Bridge Park.
Lower Manhattan
Lower Manhattan, also known as Downtown Manhattan, is the southernmost part of the island of Manhattan, the main island and center of business and government of the City of New York, which itself originated at the southern tip of Manhattan Island in 1624.
Lower Manhattan is defined most commonly as the area delineated on the north by 14th Street, on the west by the Hudson River, on the east by the East River, and on the south by New York Harbor (also known as Upper New York Bay).
The Lower Manhattan business district forms the core of the area below Chambers Street. It includes the Financial District (often referred to as Wall Street, after its primary artery) and the World Trade Center site. At the island's southern tip is Battery Park; City Hall is just to the north of the Financial District. Also south of Chambers Street are the planned community of Battery Park City and the South Street Seaport historic area.
The city hall and related government infrastructure of the City of New York are located in Lower Manhattan, next to City Hall Park.
The largest New York City Subway hub, the Fulton Center in Lower Manhattan, re-opened in November 2014 after a $1.4 billion reconstruction project necessitated by the September 11, 2001 attacks and complicated by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Upon opening, this transit hub linking nine existing subway lines was expected to serve 300,000 daily riders. The World Trade Center Transportation Hub and PATH station is scheduled to be completed in 2015.

2024, a year with a view like the view behind me in the picture...
Location: Parvis du Sacré-Cœur, Paris 18ème (F)
Coordinates: 48°53'10.2"N 2°20'36.6"E (Google Maps)
Happy New Year: This is already my 16th year of this selfportrait project. In total 783 selfies including this one and 2 years had 53 weeks. Excluding the 66 photos who didn't make it to the selfie of the week but were too good not to upload on FlickR. Every week is still a challenge to find a location or subject for my fifty-two.
Promising 2024: You wil never know what will happen but I am looking forward what this year might bring. First of all Mehdi in Amsterdam for me personally. Then we will have the Olympic Games in July and August in Paris and the new haunted experience in De Efteling Danse Macabre. And hopefully peace will return to Gaza and Palestine.
