Top Of The Rock 28/04/2015 18h34
Of course everybody wants to go the top of the Empire State Building or since the opening of the observation deck in May 2015 also the One World Trade Center. But the best view towards these two landmarks is on the roof top of the Rockefeller Center, GE Buidling. Nothing can't top the rock.
Empire State building almost in line with the One World Trade Center. And when looking good, you can see our fellow viewers on the Empire State Building as well, they are a bit higher in the sky.
Observation Deck | Top Of The Rock
The observation deck atop the skyscraper, dubbed "Top of the Rock", reopened to the public on November 1, 2005, after undergoing a $75 million renovation. It had been closed since 1986 to accommodate the renovation of the Rainbow Room. The deck, which is built to resemble the deck of an ocean liner, offers sightseers a bird's eye view of the city, competing with the 86th floor observatory of the Empire State Building. It is often considered the best panoramic city view, if only because it offers a view of the aforementioned Empire State Building, which cannot be seen from its own observation deck.[20] The timed entry system and larger observation deck also results in shorter waiting times compared to the Empire State.

Empire State Building
The Empire State Building is a 102-story skyscraper located in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, on Fifth Avenue between West 33rd and 34th Streets. It has a roof height of 380 m, and with its antenna spire included, it stands a total of 443 m high. Tallest in the world from 1931 to 1970. Its name is derived from the nickname for New York, the Empire State. Following the September 11 attacks in 2001, the Empire State Building was again the tallest building in New York (although it was no longer the tallest in the US or the world), until One World Trade Center reached a greater height on April 30, 2012. he Empire State Building is currently the fourth-tallest completed skyscraper in the United States (after the One World Trade Center, the Willis Tower and Trump International Hotel and Tower, both in Chicago), and the 25th-tallest in the world (the tallest now is Burj Khalifa, located in Dubai). It is also the fifth-tallest freestanding structure in the Americas.

Two days in Athenes. A visit to the Acropolis is a must do, but the ancient citadel located on a rocky outcrop above the city was closed because of the national holiday of May 1st...the Areopagus Hill (Mars Hill) was the alternative location for this weeks '52-Weeks selfie'...
Location: Areopagus Hill, northwest of the Acropolis in Athens, Greece.
Coordinates: 37°58'21" N 23°43'23" E
Reason: A two day city trip to the capital city of Greece, Athenes. A KLM flight, an Airbnb, a three day transport ticket and nice temperatures. Main reason was Andy's first flight ever. Accomplished with a KLM Boeing 737-800 (PH-BXU), flight KL1575 from Amsterdam (AMS) to Athenes (ATH), depature 12h49, arrival 16h43 (flight time 2h56), flight distance 2,184 km.
Areopagus (Hill): The Areopagus is a prominent rock outcropping located northwest of the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. Its English name is the composite form of the Greek name Areios Pagos, translated "Ares Rock" (Ancient Greek: Ἄρειος Πάγος). In classical times, it functioned as the court for trying deliberate homicide, wounding and religious matters, as well as cases involving arson or olive trees. Ares was supposed to have been tried here by the gods for the murder of Poseidon's son Halirrhothius (a typical example of an aetiological myth).

View from a dead end road Northwest of Bourg-Saint-Maurcie. A cul-de-sac with some beautiful views over Bourg-Saint-Maurice and the valley.
Bourg Saint-Maurice
Bourg-Saint-Maurice is part of the Paradiski ski area (425 km of slopes, 141 lifts, 239 slopes - 12 Green, 132 Blue, 66 Red, 29 Black). Although there is no skiing at this altitude, it is conveniently linked to Arc 1600 by the Arc en Ciel funicular railway and is therefore home to many budget rental properties. Unlike the other villages that make up Les Arcs, Bourg-Saint-Maurice is open all year.
Bourg is also a popular summer destination, as it offers lots of opportunity for lovers of the outdoors and watersports. There is a whitewater slalom course on the Isere river used for international canoe and kayak competitions. The course on the Isere has been host to the ICF world championships and is used by many European teams as a training course in the summer. The course is often changed by the floods that occur during the winter months.
The surrounding mountains are good for walking and mountain biking. They also are a good place for paragliding and hang gliding. Some of Les Arcs ski lifts operate during July and August to get walkers to the higher peaks and you can take mountain bikes up on these. Mountain bikes ( VTT (Vélo Tout Terrain) in French) can be hired in both Bourg and Les Arcs. Some of the high altitude restaurants open in these months, the ones at Pre st Esprit and L'Arpete have small outdoor pools.
The nearest summer glacier skiing is in Tignes (approximately 27 km from Bourg) on the Grande Motte, however due to glacial recession it is now closed at certain times of the year.

Grottes d'Hercule 06/07/2023 13h04
Grottes d'Hercules is on my list to revisit. We came, saw and left again immediately with the City Tour Bus.
Grottes d'Hercule
Grottes d'Hercule (Caves of Hercules) is an archaeological cave complex located in Cape Spartel, Morocco. located 14 kilometers west of Tanger. The cave has two openings, one to the sea and one to land. The sea opening is known as "The Map of Africa." It is believed that the Phoenicians created the sea opening, which is in the shape of Africa when looked at from the sea. There are also some markings on the wall in the shape of eyes, that are said to have been made by the Phoenicians, which make up a map of the local area.
The cave itself is part natural and part man-made. The man-made part was used by Berber people to cut stone wheels from the walls, to make millstones, thus expanding the cave considerably.
The cave was long thought to be bottomless. It was believed that the cave is one end of a subterranean ley tunnel over 24 kilometres long which passes under the Strait of Gibraltar and emerges at St. Michael's Cave in Gibraltar. Legend has it that the Barbary macaques came to the Rock of Gibraltar from Morocco this way.

The Temple of Hephaestus as seen from the Areopagus Hill. In the background the metropole of Athens. On the forground the Monument of the Eponymous Heroes. Constructed in the 5th century before Christ.
Temple of Hephaestus
The Temple of Hephaestus or Hephaisteion (also "Hephesteum"; Ancient Greek: Ἡφαιστεῖον, Greek: Ναός Ηφαίστου) or earlier as the Theseion (also "Theseum"; Ancient Greek: Θησεῖον, Greek: Θησείο), is a well-preserved Greek temple; it remains standing largely as built. It is a Doric peripteral temple, and is located at the north-west side of the Agora of Athens, on top of the Agoraios Kolonos hill. From the 7th century until 1834, it served as the Greek Orthodox church of Saint George Akamates. The building's condition has been maintained due to its history of varied use.

Cap Spartel 06/07/2023 12h36
A special place in the area of Tanger is this cape. The northwesternmost point of the African continent.
Cap Spartel
Cape Spartel (Arabic: رأس سبارطيل, Moroccan Arabic: أشبرتال, French: Cap Spartel, Spanish: Cabo Espartel) is a promontory in Morocco about 1,000 feet (300 m) above sea level at the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar, 12 km west of Tangier. It is the northwesternmost point of the African continent. Below the cape are the Caves of Hercules.
According to Mohamed Chafik, the name of this location is derived from Latin spartium, which is the name of a plant genus (Spanish broom).
The cape rises to a height of 326 m. at the top of Jebel Quebir, where a lighthouse built by Sultan Muhammad IV in 1864 is situated at the end of a cliff.
Renovation of the whole Cape Spartel site was started in 2020 and completed in 2021. It is now open to the public and includes a maritime museum, restaurant, botanical garden and an event space. Visitors can also access the top of the lighthouse to enjoy the stunning view of the strait of Gibraltar. Cape Spartel is accessible from the National Road S701.

Looking over the Vltava river towards the Staré Město with the Malá Strana in the foreground. We were lucky with the weather. And also the Karlův most (Charles Bridge) is well visible here.
Petřín Tower
The Petřín Lookout Tower (Czech: Petřínská rozhledna) is a steel-framework tower 63.5 metres tall on Petřín Hill in Prague, built in 1891. It resembles the Eiffel Tower and was used as an observation tower as well as a transmission tower. Today the tower is a major tourist attraction.
The Petřín Hill is roughly a half-hour walk up paths and the tower is also quite an arduous climb; however, the hill is served by a frequent Petřín funicular and the tower has an elevator for elderly and disabled people. In 2014 the tower was visited by more than 557,000 visitors, with foreigners accounting for over 70% of said visitors.
The two observation platforms are accessible via 299 stairs in sections of 13 per flight running around the inside of the structure. A pair of staircases form a double-helix structure allowing visitors travelling up and down concurrently.
Petřín Lookout Tower is often described a smaller version of the Eiffel Tower, which is 328m tall. In contrast to the Eiffel Tower, Petřín Lookout Tower has an octagonal, not square, cross-section. Further, it does not stand, as does the Eiffel Tower, on four columns of lattice steel. The whole area under its legs is covered with the entrance hall.

Study of the day:
Les lignes de fuite ne définissent pas un avenir mais un devenir. Il n’y a pas de programme, pas de plan de carrière possible lorsque nous sommes sur une ligne de fuite. On devient soi-même imperceptible et clandestin dans un voyage immobile (...) où le plus grand secret est de n'avoir plus rien à cacher.
The vanishing lines don't define a future but a "becoming". There is no program, no possible plan when we are on a vanishing line. We are becoming imperceptible and clandestine on a motionless travel (...) where the biggest secret is to have nothing to hide.

One of the space invaders who made it not long during the official invasion wave of Invader and I have never been able to capture the original version of this I -Invader- BXL space invader near the Palais de Justice high above the Marolles neighbourhood.
The city of Brussels has been invaded in 2012. Invader put up in total 40 space invaders during one single wave between 08/03/2012 and 15/03/2012 with a total score of 1130 points. Seven of these invaders are worth 50 points. No 10 or 100 points space invaders in Brussels.
