The ancient Carnival held in the village of Podence is one of the most important traditional events of northern Portugal. The strong participation of the local community that has managed to preserve this tradition for centuries and its current importance in the region's cultural events were crucial factors for UNESCO to classify the Carnival of Podence as Intangible World Heritage.
During Carnival, the âdevilishâ figures of the Caretos - men, boys, women and girls wearing masks and costumes with colourful fringes, with masks made of tin or leather and bells attached around the waist - roam the streets of Podence making lots of noise to disturb the usual peace and quiet of the village.
Originally the Caretos were linked with the figure of the âdevil on the looseâ and represented the excesses, euphoria, and joy allowed at this time of year, after the cold winter months, while also celebrating the fertility of the approaching spring.

This carrier is really comfortable and so very pretty. Pods are fantastic - and they consist of two straps coming off a square body. When you finish tying your babe on, it feels a lot like using a backpack, except prettier, washable and really comfortable.

OK, its a bit strange. A free standing pod is located in the room. My collegues found the absence of a door on the cleaning end of the pod unsettling. Not sure why, no one else was there.
This isn't a hotel to stay at if you are at an early stage of the relationship... or you have smelly poo. Just sayin' like!

I took this photo of one of the 32 pods from my pod. The gradual rotation in one of the 32 high-tech glass capsules takes approximately 30 minutes and gives you an ever-changing perspective of London. On a clear day you can see up to 40 kilometres away. Of course, to get the best out of it you must stand close to one of the windows, not sit in the middle on the seat provided and wish you were somewhere else. Like my wifeâŠ..
