Trying out the new Hydra HDR plugin for Aperture 2.1, using the same source images I used for an older photo. The effect is very different and more natural looking, although it doesn't offer as many options as the Photomatix tone mapping plugin for Photoshop.

Following on from my studies in class, I did a low key strobist shoot at home with my wife as a very unwilling model. I researched the information on how to carry out the shoot beforehand using the internet and an instructional video on YouTube.
Essentially what I did was this:
I set the Shutter Speed to the highest I could go but keeping within the flash synchronisation speeds. I then took a number of test shots, each time shutting down the aperture until there was no ambient light hitting the sensor. I checked this using the histogram to ensure that the settings were correct. I ended up with 1/160 @ f/9.0 ISO100
Once I had the camera settings correct I setup a Canon Speedlight on a lightstand with a 32" shoot-thru umbrella. I was firing the speedlight with some wireless triggers (Yongnuo RF-602) that I have within my kit. I set the power on the speedlight to 1/8th initially and did some test shots and adjusted the power accordingly to light just the face of my model.
I also adjusted the positioning of the Lightstand and my Model, bringing them both further from the wall to make use of the Inverse Square Law to darken the background as much as possible.
As the shots were in a darkened room I did find it difficult to keep my lens in focus. The AF just kept hunting so I had to change to Manual Focus and work with it as best as I could.
My initial shots were in the kitchen but the white walls were obtrusive so I changed the living room where I have a dark wall. Unfortunately I forgot to recheck my settings so the rear wall can be seen to a certain extent.
The final images were adjusted with Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Black & White conversion with NikSoft SilverFX plugin

I just download a couple of plugins fro Photoshop and tried them Yesterday.
In this pictures I used the Bokeh 2 and the Eye Candy 6.
