La Kodak Retina IIIc és una de les darreres Retina plegables fabricades a Stuttgart, i una de les més boniques. És la primera Retina amb denominació III, el que indica que compta amb telemetre i fotòmetre. Es tracta d'un fotometre de seleni (sense bateria) que encara dona mesuraments força ajustats, tot i tenir uns 60 anys! El fotometre es de doble posició, deixant un foradet per a fotos d'exterior, o obrint la tapa per a fotos d'interior.
La Retina IIIc (ausf. I) fou fabricada entre 1954 i 1957, i aquesta data de la part final de la producció, per diverses petites modificacions; per tant data del 1956 o 57.
Un detall curiós de les Retina finals és que la lent és intercanviable, però només en part. De fet, quasi cap càmera plegable tenia lents intercanviables, i aquestes Retina només canviaven la part frontal de la lent, convertint-la en un 35mm o 85mm. Però això tenia un preu: la càmera aleshores no es podia plegar, era molt complicat enfocar, i calia fer servir un visor extern per enquadrar.
La càmera porta una enganxina al interior, indicant que fou venguda per Photo-Hauschildt, de Darmstadt.
En conjunt és una meravella de la precisió germànica (sota el nom Kodak) que encara funciona amb gairebé la mateixa finezza que el primer dia.

The Kodak Retina IIIc is one of the latest folding Retinas manufactured in Stuttgart, and one of the most beautiful. But this came at a price: the camera could not be folded, it was very difficult to focus, and an external viewer had to be fitted.
This camera has a sticker inside indicating that it was sold in a Darmstadt shop: Photo-Hauschildt.
Altogether, it is a wonder of German precision (under the name Kodak) that still works with almost the same fineness as the first day.

En primer lloc, és una de les primeres càmeres de rodet del món, i molt en especial, la primera que realment es podia portar a la butxaca, com clàrament indica el seu nom. Hi havia ja aleshores càmeres més petites, però no de rodet de pel·licula.
La FPK es començà a produir el 1897, i inicià una gràn familia de càmeres plegables de la marca Kodak que s'allargaren fins poc abans de la Segona Guerra Mundial, amb infinitat de variants. És, pertant la "avia" de totes elles. Emprava el format 105, fent fotos de 2 1/4 x 3 1/4; de fet és molt similar al actual format 120, pel que amb certa traça, es pot fer servir en aquesta càmera.

The FPK began production in 1897, and launched a large family of Kodak-branded folding cameras that lasted until shortly before World War II, with countless variants. It is, as such, the "grandmother" of all of them. It used the 105 format roll film, taking 2 1/4 x 3 1/4 photos; in fact it is very similar to the current format 120, so with some adaptations it can be used in this camera.
The shutter and lens were very simple, integrated in the structure and allowed almost no variation in photography. In fact, this camera does not have much more possibilities than a much simpler and ubiquitous Brownie box camera, but thanks to the bellows, it is much more compact.
In 1899, with almost no change in structure, the camera was renamed, incorporating No.1 in front of "Folding Pocket Kodak"; Thus it differed from other variants of different sizes that were being incorporated into the catalog, such as No.0 or No.1A. Although there are several trance "sub-models", I think this is still an original FPK and not a No.1, as 75,000 were manufactured, and its serial number is between the 44,000. Also, in the text inside the camera it does not speak of any patent since 1894 (I have seen others than they do), nor does it incorporate "brilliant" viewfinders, typical of the first "No.1". All in all, it gives a manufacturing timeline of 1898-1899, just when the Cuban War!
Someone, maybe the first owner, wrote the letters AP on one of the chrome extenders, probably his initials.

La Houghton-Butcher The May Fair Camera és una càmera plegable de format mitjà força usual per als anys 20 i 30 del s. XX. De fet, per les seves caracteristiques és una càmera dins el sector mitjà baix de qualitat, amb un obturador i objectiu força limitats. Les velocitats només arriben a 1/100 i el diafragma només té dues posicions sense indicació precisa (f), només "ordinary" i "very bright".
Però esteticament és molt interessant, oimés quan és potser la única càmera d'aquest periode que he vist mostrar el seu objectiu com un ull estilitzat. Seria d'esperar que molts altres fabricants haguessin fet tal "simulació" tant evident. El fet que porti el nom The May Fair sembla que s'explica perquè aquesta era una marca de tabac popular a Anglaterra en aquell moment. Seria per tant una càmera que formava part de l'estratgia de marketing i vendes d'aquesta empresa tabaquera.
Fou fabricada cap a 1930 i aquest exemplar funciona perfectament. Com a bonus portava un rodet de format 120 de la marca belga Gevaert, per desgracia en molt mal estat (no s'hi aprecien imatges antigues, un cop revelat, i molt malament les que vaig fer jo per tal d'acabar-lo). L'altre extra és que a la funda s'hi troba el nom del seu primer propietar: J. Hodgkins.

The Houghton-Butcher The May Fair Camera is a fairly common medium format folding camera for the 1920s and 1930s. In fact, due to its characteristics, it is a camera in the medium-low quality sector, with a fairly limited shutter and lens. Speeds only go to 1/100 and the diaphragm has only two positions with no precise indication (f), only "ordinary" and "very bright".
But aesthetically it is very interesting, especially when it is perhaps the only camera of this period that I have seen showing its lens as a stylized eye. One would expect that many other manufacturers would have made such obvious ocular "simulation". The fact that it bears the name The May Fair (Reg.) seems to be explained by the fact that this was a popular brand of tobacco in England at the time. It would therefore be a camera that was part of the marketing and sales strategy of this tobacco company.
It was manufactured around 1930 and this one works perfectly. As a bonus it had a 120 roll from the Belgian brand Gevaert, unfortunately in very bad condition (old images are not appreciated, once developed, and very badly the ones I exposed to finish it) . The other bonus is that the leather case has the name of its first owner: Mr. J. Hodgkins.

La Welta Perfekta és una càmera TLR (Twin Lens Reflex) d'un tipus força especial, les plegables!
De fet, només en conec 3 o 4 d'alemanes, totes dels anys 30. No fou un sistema gaire exitós, j a que tot i que feia càmeres força complexes i cares de produir, la reducció de volum un cop plegades no és tanta. Les altres TLR plegables que conec son la també Welta Superfekta, la KW Pilot, i la Zeh Zekaflex.
Aquesta Perfekta fou fabricada prop de Dresde entorn 1934, i compta amb dos objectius Meyer Görlitz Trioplan f3.5 / 75mm., amb obturador central tipus Compur. Per un text indicador interior es veu que fou venguda al mercat francès.
En aquesta imatge, la podeu veure plegada. Com es pot comprovar, el principal problema és el visor reflex, que no es plega com la resta.

The Welta Perfekta is a TLR (Twin Lens Reflex) camera of a very special type, the folding ones!
In fact, I only know 3 or 4 German ones, all from the 1930s. It wasn't a very successful system, because even though it made cameras quite complex and expensive to produce, the volume reduction once folded isn't so great. The other folding TLRs I know of are the Welta Superfekta, the KW Pilot, and the Zeh Zekaflex.
This Perfekta was manufactured near Dresden around 1934, and has two Meyer Görlitz Trioplan f3.5 / 75mm lenses, with a Compur-type central shutter. An internal indicator text shows that it was sold on the French market.
Here is the Perfekta in it's folded position, although the reflex mirror does not fold, so it's not so perfect (pun intended).

Aquesta és una de les càmeres més grans que tinc, tot i que per desgracia de moment no la puc fer servir. Es tracta d'una càmera de gran format del entorn del any 1900. Aquest tipus de càmeres de fusta s'anomenen de diverses formes, sent la anglesa "tailboard camera" força comuna, però tambe reisekamera en alemany i "chambre de voyage" en francès. En aquests darrers casos, fa referencia a que era una camara "lleugera i transportable" (ehem) per a quan va sorgir, cap al 1860. De tota manera la majoria d'exemplars daten del periode 1890-1920.
Es tracta d'una càmera de plaques de vidre de format 13x18 cm, que es carreguen a la càmera en portaplaques de fusta que-no-tinc-ni-trobo (per això no la puc fer servir. Donat que les plaques de vidre de gelantino-bromur de finals s. XIX eren molt lentes, no cal ni obturador, ja que les exposicions eren com a mínim de 2 o 3 segons, i facilment de més. Obviament necessita trípode o una superficie on situar-la. És de tota manera una càmera molt plegable i transportable, ben pensada i amb el rellevant detall de protegir el vidre esmeril·lat, la part més fragil de la càmera.
En un principi permet fer fotografies vertical, però tota la manxa i el vidre esmerilat giren 90º per a fer fotos apaisades.
No conec amb certesa el fabricant de la càmera i obviament menys la data, però està marcada en diversos punts amb el nom "Sauthier" i l'objectiu és un E. Français, nom que sé que també fabricava cameres. Desgraciadament sembla que les marcava i no és el cas d'aquesta; i Sauthier no sembla conegut com a fabricant. De tota manera penso que algun d'aquests ha de ser, i en tot cas és d'origen francès i entorn l'any 1900.

This is one of the biggest cameras I have, although unfortunately by now I cannot use it. It is a large format camera made around the year 1900. This type of wooden cameras are called in several ways, being the English "tailboard camera" quite common, but also "reisekamera" in German and "chambre de voyage" in french. This "travel" meaning refers to the fact that it was a "lightweight and transportable" camera (ehem) when it emerged, around 1860. In any case, the majority of surviving examples date from the period 1890-1920.
It is a 13x18 cm dry plate camera, which is loaded into the camera in a wooden holder that-I-can-not-find-on-eBay (that's why I can not use it. Since the glass plates of Gelantino-Bromure of the late 19th century were very slow, no need of shutter, since the exposures were at least 2 or 3 seconds long, and easily over. Obviously, it needs a tripod or a flat surface to place it. It's a very collapsible and transportable camera, well thought out and with the remarkable detail of protecting the ground glass, the most fragile part of the camera.
In the just-unfolded position, it allows you to take portrait pictures, but all the bellows and ground glass turn 90º to make possible to take landscape photos.
I do not know for sure the name of the manufacturer and obviously the date it was made, but it is marked in several places with the name "Sauthier" and the lens is an E. Français, who also made cameras. Unfortunately, it seems that he branded them and that is not the case; and "Sauthier" does not look like a known manufacturer. Anyway, I think that one of these must be, and in any case it is of French origin and made arround in the year 1900, probably earlier, as it lacks shutter.

La Voigtländer Bessa II és una de les càmeres més boniques i elegants que mai s’han disenyat. Es tracta d’una camara de format mitjà (120) plegable, produida entre 1950 i 1956. Als anys 50 fou considerada com la millor càmara del seu format, especialment indicada per a retrats i paisatges. No cal dir que les linies de la part superior, amb els dos volants per enfocar i avançar el rodet, tot cromat, son una meravella, així com la forma com es desplega la lent, d’un preciós tò blavós. En aquest cas es tracta d’una Color-Skopar f3.5 / 105mm de la propia Voigtländer, tot i que podia ser altres objectius més cars, com el Color-Heliar o l’inabastable (i radioactiu) APO-Lanthar f4.5 / 105mm. L'obturador és un Synchro Compur amb velocitats entre 1 segon i 1/500.

The gorgeously beutiful Voigtländer Bessa II is one of the most beautifuly designed cameras in history. The moment I saw one on the web, I had to have it. It’s a 120 format folding camera, made in 1950-1956 in Germany, and considered in the 50’s as the best mid format folding camera. It combines quality with splendid lines, specially in the top, with twin round levers for focusing and fim advance. The only drawbacks are the tiny rangefinder eyepiece and that a folding camera could never be so rigid, and as such, solid as… a rigid camera, like a Rolleiflex or a Hasselblad.
The lens in this case is the not so cheap Color-Skopar f3.5 / 105mm, but there are more expensive options, like the Color-Heliar and outside of the common mortals, the APO-Lanthar f4.5 / 105mm version, which could cost 10.000 euros and even more!!!! And also it’s a radioactive lens, so better don’t keep it in your bedroom. Anyway, this Color-Skopar has a wonderful blue shine, as you can see. The shutter is a Synchro Compur with speeds from 1 to 1/500 of a second.

... ja he pujat anteriorment una foto de dues Ihagee Patent Duplex 720 ja anteriorment. De fet, és pràcticament identica a les anteriors. A hores d'ara ja tinc una petita col·lecció d'aquesta càmera plegable de plaques alemana que aparentment no interessa gairebe a ningú més. Però per a mi tenen el vincle especial de ser clons de la que era la càmera del meu avi patern als anys 20 i 30.
Aquesta càmera de la imatge és igualment una Ihagee Patent Duplex 720 de format 9x12 com la del meu avi, sino que té el mateix obturador i pràcticament el mateix objectiu. Més endavant ho detallo.
Pertant literalment és com si pogues fer fotos amb la càmera del meu aví, i amb l'aventatges: no he de patir tant en fer-la servir ja que no hi ha el lligam familiar (i major responsabilitat) si es fa malbé, i a sobre està en encara millors condicions tècniques. L'obturador va lleugerament més lent, però l'objectiu està perfecte.
El motiu unic d'haver-la comprat és que aquesta no sembla patir de fuites de llum alhora de exposar plaques o pel·licula de format 9x12 cm, al contrari que la primera que ja tenia. Els tancaments de vellut estan en optimes condicions. La vaig comprar a un venedor de Bremen, a Alemania.
I aquesta càmera només es diferencia de la del meu avi en el objectiu, els altres elements son identics: no té visor extern com la que ja tenia, i el nivell de bombolla és el mateix. Totes tres càmeres, aquesta inclosa semblen fabricades cap al 1924-1925.
El numero de serie de l'estructura es el 726XX, mentre que la del meu avi és la 734XX. Per contra, l'obturador Compur d'aquesta sembla força més vell, relativament. En quant al objectiu, ambdos tenen la mateixa apertura i distancia focal, f4.5/135mm, però mentre que en el present cas es tracta d'un Goerz Dogmar, en la del meu avi es tracta d'un Meyer Görlitz Doppel-Anastigmat Veraplan.

By now I have a small collection of this German plate folding camera that apparently hardly anyone else is interested in. But for me they have the special bond of being clones of what my paternal grandfather's camera was in the 1920s and 1930s.
This camera in the picture is also an Ihagee Patent Duplex 720 in 9x12 format like my grandfather's, but it has the same shutter and practically the same lens. I will detail it later.
So it's literally like you can take pictures with my grandfather's camera, and with the advantages: I don't have to suffer as much when using it since there's no family bond (and greater responsibility) if it gets damaged, and about is in even better technical conditions. The shutter is slightly slower, but the lens is perfect.
The only reason I bought it is that it doesn't seem to suffer from light leaks when exposing 9x12 cm plates or film, unlike the first one I already had. The velvet closures are in excellent condition. I bought it from a seller in Bremen, Germany.

Detall d'aquesta càmera amb l'interior extret del seu "embolcall"; és un sistema d'obertura curiós i certament més complicat que en la majoria de cameres plegables. No crec que fos gaire utilitzat ni tansols en altres models de la Kodak.
Aquesta No.1A Autographic Kodak Special és el segon model de càmera amb telèmetre integrat, després de la seva "germana gran" No.3A Autographic Special model-b, del 1916 (en podeu veure una de tardana aquí: flic.kr/p/Sn6zZA).
Però dins del periode de fabricació d'aquesta càmera (1917-1926), aquest exemplar sembla dels molt inicials. En primer lloc compta amb un obturador Wollensak Optimo Nº1, que s'hi instal·là en aquests models fins al 1923; en segón, el mètode per obrir l'interior de la càmera és força inusual, i inclou laterals de baquelita (es va fer servir fins 1923). Encara més evidents son els nº de serie molt baixos, tant de la càmera (1909) com de la lent B&L Kodak Anastigmat f6.3 de 130mm (7018)). I per a rematar-ho, hi ha algun detall com la llengueta per a estirar la manxa que és completament diferent a qualsevol altra que he vist a internet (aquesta té text). Tot plegat disculpa el fet que la càmera estigui en mal estat: la manxa té forats considerables i l'obturador no funciona be.

Within the production years of this camera (1917-1926), this one seems a very early one. La Eumig P8 inicial comptava amb "braços" plegables al interior del projector, pel que cal obrir-lo per a desplegar-los. El rebobinat és fa manualment, com es pot apreciar amb el frontal. També es veu clarament el fusible, el selector de voltatge, el transformador i el motor electric.
Com a part pel meu intent per a poder projectar pel·licules de 8mm (no super-8, que és un tipus posterior), així com revelar-les en positiu directament jo mateix, vaig buscar un projector adequat. Del meu pare he trobat un projector de Super-8, que a sobre no va bé. Per tant, vaig buscar per internet.
Finalment em vaig decidir pels projectors Eumig P8, que semblen molt barats i facils de trobar. El model basic es fabricà entre 1954 i 1963. De fet, aquest mateix el vaig comprar molt barat a Barcelona. Per desgracia, tot i que en principi semblava funcionar bé, de cop la bombeta va deixar d'anar. I no sembla pas fosa, el filament es veu bé. Vaig fer altres proves amb un tester electric, canviant el fussible per un de nou i adequat... res. Fins i tot vaig provar bombetes modernes amb el mateix encaix (encara es fa servir per a llums de motos i cotxes), però res, i això que sembla tenir tensió electrica adequada.
Com vaig descobrir que altres models Eugmig una mica més moderns són molt més adequats perquè fan servir directament bombetes halogenes actuals, provaré amb un altre projector.

As part of my attempt to be able to project 8mm films (not super-8, which is a later type), as well as develop them to positive directly myself, I searched for a suitable projector. I found a Super-8 projector from my father, and not in working condition. So, I searched the internet.
I finally settled on the Eumig P8 projectors, which seem very cheap and easy to find. The basic model was manufactured in Austria from 1954 to 1963. In fact, I bought this one very cheaply in Barcelona. Unfortunately, although it seemed to work fine at first, the bulb suddenly stopped working. And it doesn't look melted, the filament looks good. I did other tests with an electrical tester, changing the fusible with a new and suitable one...nothing. I even tried modern bulbs with the same socket (still used for motorcycle and car lights) but nothing, and that seems to have the correct voltage.
As I found that other slightly more modern Eugmig models are much more suitable because they use current halogen bulbs directly, I will try another projector.
