I have to admit this photograph is exactly why I took the camera out that Sunday afternoon. Two things really interest me in landscapes: Light and the weather. It's why I love J.M.W. Turner's (1775-1851) paintings so much. Although this is more Constable (1776-1837) than Turner. The father of the Australian landscape, John Glover (1767-1849), knew both Turner and Constable very well before late in life embarking on a new career in Van Diemen's Land. Glover lived on his farm "Patterdale" at Deddington, in the foothills of Ben Lomond. But he would roam far and wide around Launceston and I'd like to think he would have seen the Tamar Valley from a point close to this. He'd be amazed at the developments.

So they were sitting in the car talking.
He turned to her and began to tell a story of this and that, of pros and cons, of blacks and whites.
She listened for a while then her gaze turned uncontrollably skyward.
"I've never seen the sky like that...It seems to be split, right down the middle..." she said.
There was a brief pause.
"Sorry for interrupting...Please, continue..."

Small, brightly-colored leaf warbler. Yellowish green above and pale below, with bright yellow brow stripes, a pale crown stripe, and a bicolored bill (dark above, orange below). Has two wingbars, of which upper can be quite pale or absent. Note white undertail and distinct behavior of flicking both wings at the same time (Blyth’s, Claudia’s, and Hartert’s leaf warblers flick their wings alternatingly). More extensively yellow and with a stronger, more contrasting head pattern than Blyth’s and Emei leaf warblers, and lacks the bright rump patch of “Pallas’s-type” leaf warblers. Closely related Kloss’s Leaf Warbler is extremely similar; look for Davison’s brighter and more extensively white undertail coverts. Breeds in deciduous broadleaved and mixed hill and montane forest; descends into forested foothills in the non-breeding season. Song is short and sweet: “wih-chew-chee wih-chew-chee-wih”. Calls are high and liquid-sounding: “chew-wee” or “wit-chew-wee”. (eBird)
-----------------
We saw these little warblers quite frequently, flitting rapidly through the trees. This one was chasing insects in the more inaccessible sections of the trees, but came out to give us a quick once-over before resuming the hunt.
Thanks to Daren who alerted me to the fact that I had mis-ID'd this warbler. I used Merlin Photo ID and compared my other photos with those from eBird to realize that this was not a Hume's Warbler, but a Davison's Leaf Warbler.

Clara and I drove 50 miles through a twisting gorge in the dark and through a very dense fog to reach this spot. The lake was flooding and this was taken just before sunrise. I know the water looks like snow, but it isn't. She liked this so much we will put a large print on our living room wall.
Another example of how Clara graces my life.

Plump, well-camouflaged shorebird that blends into wet meadows and marshes. Dark and heavily marked, with pale buffy stripes on back and face. Extremely long bill used to probe into mud for invertebrates. Similar in shape to American Woodcock but much darker with extensive markings on underparts. Fairly common and widespread throughout North America, wintering to northern South America. Found in muddy wetlands, flooded fields, and marshes, usually singly but sometimes gathering in loose groups. When flushed, listen for rough call note. On breeding grounds, watch and listen for aerial flight display, given day and night: a rapid series of hoot-like noises produced by the outer tail feathers in flight. (eBird)
-------------
With its cryptic plumage and preference for grassy muddy areas, these snipe can be very hard to find. I have found, however, that a particular line of fence poles along the road at Carden Alvar are the favourite spot for these birds and most of my best snipe photos come from this location. On this day it was quite windy and he was trying to keep his feathers under control.

Summer comes, winter fades
Here we are just the same
Don't need pressure, don't need change
Let's not give the game away
There used to be an empty space
A photograph without a face
But with your presence, and your grace
Everything falls into place
Just please don't say you love me
'Cause I might not say it back
Doesn't mean my heart stops skipping when you look at me like that
There's no need to worry when you see just where we're at
Just please don't say you love me
'Cause I might not say it back
Heavy words are hard to take
Under pressure precious things can break
And how we feel is hard to fake
So let's not give the game away
Just please don't say you love me
'Cause I might not say it back
Doesn't mean my heart stops skipping when you look at me like that
There's no need to worry when you see just where we're at
Just please don't say you love me
'Cause I might not say it back

Large sunbird of mangroves. Male is completely covered with iridescence and can appear dark all over; look out for glistening wine-red throat and overall blue-green tones in good lighting. Female is far plainer, with a yellow belly, a pale throat, and a thin dark line through the eye. Nominate female Plain-throated Sunbird can be similar, but Plain-throated has a yellow throat, a faint eyering, a less curved bill, and more extensive yellow underparts. Gives a squeaky, ringing trill and a inflected “tslee.” (eBird)

Large, black, crow-sized bird with decurved bill and deep red eye. In flight, white in primaries very evident. Struts around in family groups on the ground in open woodland areas around southeastern and eastern Australia. A variety of calls includes a plaintive, descending whistle. (eBird)
----------------
Although totally unrelated to crows, these choughs are just as shy. Everytime we came across a group, they would take off, much like this one is doing. Big, noisy and beautiful, they were fun to watch.
The White-winged Chough is one of only two species in their family. The other is the Apostlebird which looks very different to this bird. They are not related to the Choughs of the northern hemisphere.
