It’s more than preparedness and response: the Head of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR), Margareta Wahlström and the Senior Surveyor of the Ministry of Agriculture for Western Fiji, Shiri Narayan, agree on the importance of a more proactive approach to risk management to protect lives, livelihoods as well as public and private investment.

The Platform of Venus sits near the exit from the main plaza of Chichen Itza going north toward the Sacred Cenote. It has a square base with four balustraded stairways whose serpent heads mark the ascent to the surface of the platform. The engravings on the platform's walls depict Quetzalcoatl-Kukulcan, the central Mexican plumed serpent god and its Yucatecan counterpart, as Venus.
For the Maya at Chichen Itza, the planet Venus was extremely important, both religiously and astronomically, and was seen as an astral body that guided and protected the movements of the Maya. Astronomers meticulously charted the apparent motion of Venus, and made extensive tabulations about its cycles, some of which have been preserved in the Dresden and Grolier Codices, Mayan sacred books.

The platform of Flåm station. Norwegian railways use the frankly strange (to me anyway) system of numbering the tracks, not the platforms. This train is on track 4.
The blue sign on the platform says "Entrance 3,4,5 for individual passengers". Most people – including myself initially – took that to mean that if you weren't in a tour group, use doors 3,4 and 5 (two doors per carriage incidentally). As it turned out, it meant if you were getting off at one of the intermediate stops – i.e. weren't doing the whole tourist shebang and maybe being a proper passenger – then use those entrances because the platforms are too short. That did explain why the back carriages of the train were extremely busy. We pushed forward to near the front and ended up in a very quiet carriage which was very useful because I could run to each side of the train and take photos without getting in the way of people, or others getting in my way!

The suburban platform ends at Waterloo were rebuilt in the early 1980s. This view includes a class 33 on a Salisbury line train (unusually using such a low-numbered platform) and a class 508.
This platform is only for arriving passenger who board the train here.

The stable platform can support a relatively large payload—several hundred pounds. In general, the instruments placed on the platform require shading from the sun or need to point vertically. During the testing in June 2010, the platform hosted a microwave radiometer, a multifilter rotating shadowband radiometer, and a total sky imager. The data system module is visible in the background.

Bridgenorth Station, home of the Severn Valley Railway. Originally, the Severn Valley Railway opened in 1862 and ran until 1963. It linked Hartlebury, near Droitwich, with Shrewsbury, a distance of 40 miles. Two years later, enthusiast purchased a closed 5-mile section of the Severn Valley line from Bridgnorth to Alveley, and within two years, they owned an engine and four carriages. Today, they have 10 locomotives available for traffic, and another eight in various stages of restoration.
The boarding platform at Rockside Road station in Independence on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad may be empty now, but that won't last for long.
