This shot was taken from the Kroc Center parking lot. I think this is still listed as a historic bridge on some sites, the historic old US131 bridge is gone.

1. In a bucket, mix Fast Set 20 plaster with water until it resembles thick pudding. Test: Scrape up some wet plaster with a putty knife, then invert knife. Plaster should not drip off knife.

2. Spray exposed lathe and edges of existing dry plaster with water.

3. Apply globs of plaster to the hole. For shallow holes, fill and smooth to match existing wall surface.

For deep or large holes:

1. Fill in edges of hole - make sure to push new plaster into all the nooks and crannies

2. Cover entire hole with shallow layer of plaster

3. Use a fork or nail to create ridges all over the surface of the wet plaster

4. Let plaster dry.

Layer 2:

5. Scrape area to remove messy spots and pointy bits (but keep the rough surface so new plaster can adhere)

5. Spray dry plaster area with water.

6. Fill rest of hole with plaster.

7. Smooth to match existing wall surface.

Why 2 layers?

If plaster is applied too thick, it will crack when it dries.

a straightedge shows how worn it is. probably easier to start from scratch and make a new one. not crazy about plaster so i doubt that will happen.

After 101 years the basement is getting integrated into the rest of the house. A wall behind the stairs going to the second floor was knocked out, revealing the original construction of the walls, floor, and staircase. This shows the staircase going to the second floor as well as the lath and, on the right, plaster/lath construction. All wood is old-growth redwood. That's not really available anymore...it was all cut down to build much of the Bay Area!

This was originally a photo of me standing in the shower using the shower head as a phone.

But after some gradients, de-saturating, and playing with the "plaster" filter, this was born.

Auguste Rodin, 1903, Patinated plaster for bronze casting.

“When created in 1880 in its original size of about 70 cm high, The Thinker, then titled The Poet, was designed to sit atop the tympanum of The Gates of Hell. The figure represents Dante Alighieri, great poet of the late Middle Ages and author of The Divine Comedy, which provided the literary inspiration for the Gates. Placed vertically near the top, the figure leans forward to observe the circles of Hell while meditating on his work. From the outset The Thinker was conceived as a tortured being confronting a dilemma, almost a damned soul, but also a free spirit, determined to transcend his suffering through poetry.”

Notice how he changed colors. The plaster exo-therming as it set cooked him a bit.

Vella Venetian plaster with hand painted details

*Almost* the same shape as Lake Como. Reminiscent, at least.

I liked the way the plaster had been painted and plastered over again and painted again. Who could tell how many times?

Tic Tac Toe board and pieces made from plaster of paris and silicone molds

December 28, 2009. It was more work than I had originally planned, but the various layers of paint, granular plaster, wallpaper, paint, and undesignated other stuff were unstable (I had bubbling on the other wall) so it's down to the original smooth plaster (with various divots to fill in with new plaster). Door on the left stripped easily (to unveil a layer of shellac or something the colour and consistency of old maple syrup). Door to the right is slow and steady.
