This species is a new visitor to my backyard. They're cute little birds that can have very noticeable differences in their markings. Male and female pine siskins look similar, but some have much brighter coloration on the wings and tail. I think this one is a male.

Pine Forest Range

Northern Nevada's 25,000 acre Pine Forest Range Wilderness. The area is an island in the sky rising almost 6,000 feet above the desert floor to peaks that top out at just below 10,000 feet. The range has been glaciated, and has several cirque lakes which are very uncommon in the Great Basin -- The largest, Blue Lake, is shown in the image "reflection".

The 4-WD access route travels through huge patches of aspen interspersed with meadows/sage (aspen) -- Whitebark and Limber Pine cover the peaks giving the area its name. In mid-July, the wildflower bloom in the west had moved to the highest elevations. This part of Nevada is as dark as anywhere in the continental U.S. so the Milky Way is very visible!!

Fallen pine needles cover a trail of roots and rocks at Interstate State Park in Taylor's Falls, Minnesota.

It was finally warm enough to get out and go for a walk in the woods today -yahooo! I brought along the camera as I usually do when I take my nature walks.

back from Yellowstone and the snow is deep. i have always been fascinated by Pine Martins, Fischers and Wolverines. The Pine Martins are fascinating seldom seen residents of old growth forests and are very beautiful critters.

Taken at Llanelli WWT - I liked the way they stood out against the blue sky.
