In traditional Bangladesh, holud which translates to turmeric, was specially used on brides-to-be before their wedding day. It was commonly believed that turmeric offers several benefits when applied on the skin, including reduction in spots and pigmentation, as well as body hair growth. It was also believed that it leaves the skin with a glow, while giving it a soft and fair appearance. Thus, to make the bride prettier before her big day, specially prepared turmeric (not the one used for cooking) was applied on her face, as well as the rest of her body which will be exposed upon wearing a saree. Thus, the term 'Gaye Holud' which literally translates to 'Body Turmeric', refers to the application of turmeric on the body before the wedding.

This tradition was originally followed by the bride's close family, who would each take turn in applying the paste on her, and then offer/feed her some traditional sweets to help start her new life with a sweet taste. Over the years, the tradition transformed into a formal event, and the groom's family also got invited to join in the ceremony. The groom however, was strictly not allowed to join as he could only see his new bride at the most beautiful state, which is on the wedding day.

After a while, the same traditions were also followed for the groom, whereby everyone except the bride were invited to follow the rituals. In recent times, this traditional has seen a further transformation, where bride and groom both sit together, and guests from both sides follow the rituals of turmeric paste and traditional sweets.

Another Amazing La bella Donna Event Don’t Miss it!

One  More day at  Laguna Beach Montage Hotel Saturday 25th from 4 -7

Learn More About Kathy & Nicole Tracy

La Bella Donna Cosmetics co-founder Kathy Tracy, who runs the company's Los Angeles office, is a walking testimonial for her products. She credits La Bella Donna's signature product - Loose Mineral Foundation. "I never go out without my minerals," explains Kathy, who has always been in the public eye. The New York native, a former model, continued to work sporadically while raising her two children (son; David and daughter, La Bella Donna co-founder Nicole Tracy) in Los Angeles.

"I've always been involved in fashion. After David was born, I wanted to have flexibility, so I made the transition from modeling to wardrobe consulting, which evolved into image consulting. I worked for private clients and for corporations and I needed to look good - it was my business. But I started to have trouble with makeup. I have sensitive skin and I'm of Italian descent, which means that I have an unusual skin tone. Unfortunately, makeup would turn colour on me within an hour -it required constant touching up. Either it looked mask-like or it would fade away. I gave up on traditional foundations and became a sun-worshipper because I looked better with a suntan - it looked like makeup. Well, now we know what that does to the skin. I developed hyper-pigmentation and excessive dryness, and because of my colouring was not a good candidate for a peel. I was very frustrated."

At the same time, Nicole, who was in college, was modeling and developed adult acne. Their personal makeup challenges led the mother-daughter team to develop a foundation to meet their own high standards: no known irritants; superior, long-lasting coverage; colour that stays true; appropriate and beneficial for all ages and skin types (Kathy and Nicole have very different skin complexions). The result, La Bella Donna Loose Mineral Foundation, launched in 1994, has made them pioneers in the mineral makeup movement.

Nicole Tracy doesn't have to worry about acne any more. Although the co-founder of La Bella Donna Cosmetics currently spends more time behind a desk running a national cosmetics company than in front of a camera, she and her mother, Kathy, remain La Bella Donna's best advertisements. "Between my mother - who had her own problems with makeup - and me, we had drawers full of makeup we couldn't wear because of all the FD&C dyes, oil or alcohol, talc, fragrance and preservatives," says Nicole, who joined forces with Kathy in 1994 to develop a makeup formula that worked for both of them. "We especially wanted to bridge the gap between wellness and beauty; we didn't set out to create a 'natural' makeup, because those don't necessarily give you the coverage you need in shades close to your own skin tone," she explains. A savvy businesswoman, Nicole, who grew up in Los Angeles, relocated to her native New York in 1998 to establish an East Coast presence for La Bella Donna. She developed the line while completing her studies at the University of Southern California, from which she received a B.S. degree in Communications and Business. Nicole currently resides in Los Angeles,

California with her husband and two children.

The aging process effect on skin results in blotchy pigmentation and visible small blood vessels near the skin surface. Treatment of these blood vessels or spider vessels (telangiectasias) below the level of the collar bone is diffult. However in the head and neck region these blood vessels are sensitive to and can be removed by laser treatments.

The photos below show a patient before any treatment, 1 1/2 months after the first treatment and then 1 1/2 months after the second treatment of spider vessels on the chin. Although not guaranteed for every patient sensitive patients can have complete removal of facial spider vessels within 3 laser treatments.

I imagined my face without freckles and I didn't like it. I hope she doesn't look like a stranger!

(*** Chromatism = abnormal pigmentation)

A rare little bird because it has Leucism. Its a condition in animals characterized by reduced pigmentation. Unlike albinism, it is caused by a reduction in all types of skin pigment, not just melanin.

El Greco, born Doménikos Theotokópoulos (1541 – 7 April 1614), was a painter, sculptor and architect of the Spanish Renaissance. "El Greco" (The Greek) was a nickname, a reference to his national Greek origin, and the artist normally signed his paintings with his full birth name in Greek letters.

El Greco was born in Crete, which was at that time part of the Republic of Venice, and the center of Post-Byzantine art. He trained and became a master within that tradition before travelling at age 26 to Venice, as other Greek artists had done. In 1570 he moved to Rome, where he opened a workshop and executed a series of works. During his stay in Italy, El Greco enriched his style with elements of Mannerism and of the Venetian Renaissance. In 1577, he moved to Toledo, Spain, where he lived and worked until his death. In Toledo, El Greco received several major commissions and produced his best-known paintings.

El Greco's dramatic and expressionistic style was met with puzzlement by his contemporaries but found appreciation in the 20th century. El Greco is regarded as a precursor of both Expressionism and Cubism, while his personality and works were a source of inspiration for poets and writers such as Rainer Maria Rilke and Nikos Kazantzakis. El Greco has been characterized by modern scholars as an artist so individual that he belongs to no conventional school. He is best known for tortuously elongated figures and often fantastic or phantasmagorical pigmentation, marrying Byzantine traditions with those of Western painting.

White lions are affected by a recessive genetic condition known as leucism. This causes a loss of normal pigmentation in the fur and skin, however, the lips, eyes and paw pads remain the same as the tawny lion.

This beautiful lady has been hand reared at the Zoo

A flock of barnacle geese ( Branta leucopsis) coming in-off the sea at Druridge Links, arriving from their arctic breeding grounds. They won't hang around though, they're headed for the Solway where most of them spend their winters.

The second bird is almost pure white - a leucistic bird. Leucisism is a condition in which there is partial loss of pigmentation in an animal resulting in white, pale, or patchy coloration of the skin, hair, feathers, scales or cuticle, but not the eyes

Over time, some cave- dwelling species adapt specifically for the cave environment. Since caves are dark, there is little advantage for these animals to exert energy on pigmentation or eye development; so evolution of such species eliminates these unnecessary attributes. Such species are known as troglobites. Unlike the troglophiles we've been discussing so far, most troglobites would have a difficult time surviving outside of the cave.

Troglobitic invertebrate species are not uncommon, but individual species usually aren't very widespread. The sightless cave crayfish is one example. Although abundant in one cave managed by the IKC, this species is listed as threatened in Indiana. Its population is closely monitored for any affects of human visitation.

LOOKS GOOD BUT CHRIS WANTED A CHANGE

Aka pigmentation, hyper-pigmentation, pigmentation disorder, uneven skin tone, dull skin tone, darken skin, dark spots, brown spots, age spots, sun spots, sun burn, liver spots, patches, freckles, melasma, lentigos, solar lentigines

Introduction:

Human skin has red, yellow, brown and blue tone; the skin tones result from combination of complex bio-molecules such as melanin (brown pigment), beta-carotene (yellow to orange pigment), hemoglobin (red pigment) and the condition of the skin.

The most prominent of which is melanin, produced by melanocytes under the stratum basale. Some areas of the skin simply have less melanin than other areas. As the cells containing more melanin come in contact with prolonged period of sunlight, they become darker. Other areas with less melanin or that have less exposure to the sun, remain lighter. This gives the skin an appearance of an uneven skin tone, or even pigmentation.

are long, narrow streaks, stripes or lines that develop on the skin and which differ in hue from the

surrounding skin. They are the result of a sudden stretching of the skin and are extremely common.

Anyone can develop stretch marks, although they tend to affect more women than men.

Stretch marks can be visible on body parts including the tummy, thighs, hips, breasts, upper arms, and

lower back. The marks form in the middle layer of the skin; when there is a constant stretch, the

layer tears, leaving stretch marks.

White lions are not albino as they have pigmentation which shows particularly in eye, paw pad and lip colour. The correct term for their condition is leucism, a state where there is near-normal eye colour, but loss of pigment in the skin and fur.

The cause of the unusual colouration is the same as for the white tiger. A recessive gene which results in the white appearance is found in a very small number of captive lions.

At last count, 32 white lions were recorded worldwide. The statistics are outdated and I believe that recent breeding programs in South Africa resulted in just about as many in Game Reserves around the country.

The history of the white lion is very interesting and it was on the brink of extinction with only two survivors recorded in 1993.

Close Up of an Albino Alligator at the Cape May County Park & Zoo

Albino Alligator at the Cape May County Park & Zoo

Albinism (from Latin albus, "white"; see extended etymology, also called achromia, achromasia, or achromatosis) is a congenital disorder characterized by the complete or partial absence of pigment in the skin, hair and eyes due to absence or defect of an enzyme involved in the production of melanin. Albinism results from inheritance of recessive gene alleles and is known to affect all vertebrates, including humans. While an organism with complete absence of melanin is called an albino ,an organism with only a diminished amount of melanin is described as albinoid.

Albinism is associated with a number of vision defects, such as photophobia, nystagmus and astigmatism. Lack of skin pigmentation makes the organism more susceptible to sunburn and skin cancers.

Birthmarks are pigmentary changes that occur on the skin of babies during or immediately after birth. Newborn skin diseases refer to various skin problems that occur after birth in babies. These conditions include various situations such as cradle cap, acne, eczema, diaper rash, and fungal infections. These problems are generally treatable, and it is important to perform regular skin care to keep babies' skin healthy. What is a Birthmark? Why Does It Occur?Birthmarks are spots on a baby's skin that have been present since birth. These are generally harmless and do not affect the baby's vital functions.Birthmarks are usually detected by a doctor before birth using imaging devices. Now let's take a look at the types of birthmarks together:Newborn AcneIf you say that your newborn baby has acne on their face, you can see the reasons in the continuation of our article. First of all, don't be afraid, it is one of the smallest skin problems you may encounter.- It is an acne vulgaris picture that is more seen on the cheeks, chin and forehead due to the hormone effect passed from the mother.

- It is more common in male babies.

- It heals quickly and generally does not require treatment.

- Local treatment can be applied in cases that last for a long time. Skin ointments containing corticosteroids should not be used in newborns.

A poor photo, unfortunately, but it's an interesting species so I thought I'd post it.

Lichenomphalia is both a basidiolichen and an agaric genus. Most of the species have inconspicuous lichenized thalli that consist of scattered, small, loose, nearly microscopic green balls or foliose small flakes containing single-celled green algae in the genus Coccomyxa, all interconnected by a loose network of hyphae. The agaric fruit bodies themselves are nonlichenized and resemble other types of omphalinoid mushrooms. These agarics lack clamp connections and do not form hymenial cystidia. The basidiospores are hyaline, smooth, thin-walled, and nonamyloid. Most of the species were originally classified in the genera Omphalina or Gerronema. Historically the species were classified with those other genera in the family, the Tricholomataceae together with the nonlichenized species. Lichenomphalia species can be grouped into brightly colored taxa, with vivid yellow and orange colors, versus the grey brown group, depending upon the microscopic pigmentation deposits. Molecular research comparing DNA sequences now place Lichenomphalia close to the redefined genus Arrhenia, which together with several other genera not traditionally considered to be related, fall within the newly redefined Hygrophoraceae.

It was another wet night last night so I made a return visit to the local site where I have been seeing these "dark-tailed" Sminthurinus species. As usual; lots of typical yellow forms and dark forms of Sminthurinus aureus, a few Sminthurinus elegans and this single dark-tailed form.

I manged a few shots of the individual before it pinged away. I was trying to get detail of the "small abdomen" to see whether abd.5 is fused with the large abdomen or not. I'm still not sure!

I've been trying track down my springtail, in amongst all the baby S. aquaticus. There were a few like this with very strong pigmentation so I'm thinking not aquaticus, or S. malmgreni, as I only ever found one S. malmgreni and the distribution of these one was about the same as the adult S. nr bifidus... Well, they've got to be somewhere and these little ones are the only ones that don't look like aquaticus!

Literate Laddies

Vintage Antique Victorian Era 1800's photo print from VT.

What I liked about this print, despite all the scratches in it, and imperfection, which are truly saddening, is that the woman on the left is some kind of different ethnicity than the girl on the right.

I can;t quite place what her ethnicity is, but she has a strong jaw bone feature. Also, she has very short cut hair, which is also very curly.

She also is holing a book, and another book in on the table which implies that she may have been literate, but she also sits "proper" indicating she was educated.

Altho' her skin isn't very dark, there's a slight hint of pigmentation. Yet, this girl does not appear to be a slave at all.

The girl on the right might be either a relative, or a classmate, and most likely an abolitionist. Also, a bit of a scandalous note, the Caucasian girl on the right is showing her ankles and above the ankles and hasn't sat "proper" like the girl on the left.

This might be a subtle indication of her personality.

Fact: White Bengal Tiger is not albino, but rather resulted due to its white pigmentation recessive genes.

On one of my regular cetacean watches at Strumble Head recently I was astonished to capture this very rare Leucistic porpoise. How rare you ask? Well, if my research is correct there has only been seven recorded to this date around the UK coast in over a hundred years. This would therefore be Number eight. Unlike an albino where all pigmentation is lost, in this instance only partial pigment loss occurs and as you can see here the fin and tail are normally pigmented. Very pleased to capture these shots as it was quite a distance from the shore. Interestingly it had a calf with it which is also partially pigmented but not as severely as it's mother.

She was sitting on a park bench. There were shadows on her face because of the trees around the bench.

Then again, the main highlight here is her pregnant belly ;) so that worked out perfectly fine for us.

This gorgeous little kitten is Betty. She's thought to be about 3 months old and she came to the rescue centre, with her brother Bob, via the local PDSA. A lady had found them as strays and taken them to the PDSA, but no-one claimed them. They're extremely nervous at the moment, although also quite friendly, so I'm sure it won't be long before they settle in. I've never seen a nose like Betty's before, but it's very appealing! It's thought to be just a lack of pigmentation.

Samuel Fraunces

Purchasing a former manor home of a renowned New York family, the Delanceys, Samuel Fraunces converted the building into a tavern in 1762. The colonial mood was still pro British, so Fraunces named his inn after George III’s wife.

The Queen’s Head, also known as the Sign of Queen Charlotte, became a popular meeting place. Fraunces’ reputation, as a superior barkeep, became known throughout the colonies. As the prelude to the Revolution deepened he would add another title to his name...patriot or rebel.

By the middle of the 18th century’s sixth decade political debates began filling homes, churches and most notably – taverns. Cries of independence were matched, and often surpassed, by those clamoring for loyalty to the Crown. Parliamentary acts like the 1765’s Stamp and Quartering Acts lead to violent protest in New York, and lines of position were being drawn.

Fraunces held patriotic leanings. The outlawed Sons of Liberty began gathering in the smoky filled public house to plot their actions against monarchical powers.

However, once independence had been declared, in 1776, the war did not go in America’s favor and New York City was abandoned to British forces. Fraunces, and his family, escaped to New Jersey but his reputation forced him being arrested and brought back to cook for the invading troops.

Fraunces spent the war years in Manhattan, and his tavern survived as a gathering place for fellowship and espionage.

Upon the American victory he wrote his good friend, George Washington a congratulatory letter, making mention of “the return of Peace to my bleeding country”, his gratitude of the General’s many favors and asking forgiveness at his dealings with the “rivals”.

Washington answered the same day, praising the innkeeper’s for “maintaining a constant friendship and attention to the cause of his country.” Later Continental Congressional papers show the reimbursement of $2,000 to Fraunces for his cash advances to American soldiers.

The relationship between the General and the tavern keeper continued to grow, as did the young nation.

In 1783, the tavern served as both a place for a victory party and the site of Washington’s farewell to his officers. In November of that same year Washington wrote to a William Smith asking him to acquire from Fraunces the name of a dentist who might ease the General’s problematic dental pains.

Fraunces’ expertise was also required by Washington to assist in finding a housekeeper for Mount Vernon who could relieve Martha Washington of the drudgery of ordering and assure the household was run with things economically used.

In 1789 upon assuming the Presidency Washington asked his friend to become First Steward of the Executive Mansion. When the government moved to Philadelphia, the following year, Fraunces continued serving at the pleasure of the President.

Following his 1792 retirement he remained in the capital city, once again opening a tavern on Dock Street.

Samuel Fraunces died in 1795. But Fraunces Tavern on Pearl Street, now nested amongst the canyons of the Wall Street area still survives. So do some legends.

Recent historians have written Fraunces was a black man due in part to his nickname “Black Sam”. One children’s book took the information and created an adventure involving Fraunces and his daughter Phoebe and the saving of Washington’s life from an assignation attempt by a Thomas Hickey.

While fine for fiction no one can produce clear evidence on the subject. His birthplace cannot specify his racial origins as others, like Alexander Hamilton, were also born in the West Indies. His nickname might have come from a foul disposition or perhaps a face often streaked with kitchen soot rather than his pigmentation.

There are, however, documented facts of his accepted position in white society. He was a freemason, a congregant at New York’s Trinity Church and a registered voter, according to the 1790 census. None of which accepted black males at the time.

And while he did have children – none of them were named Phoebe. The trail against Hickey was for counterfeiting, and a plot against Washington’s life has never been uncovered.

Austin hosted its annual Museum Day on Sunday, September 18, 2016. Mike and I took advantage of the opportunity to enjoy free admission to several museums and historic homes. Our third stop was the Neill-Cochran House Museum (2310 San Gabriel St.).

In 1855, Washington and Mary Hill commissioned master builder Abner Cook to construct a Greek-Revival-style house northwest of downtown Austin. The Hills never lived in the house; its current name refers to two families who lived here after the Hills built it. Colonel Andrew and Jennie Chapman Neill purchased the house in 1876, and it was later sold to Judge Thomas and Bessie Rose Cochran in the 1890s. It was subsequently acquired by the National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of Texas in 1958 and converted into a museum.

After exploring the home's downstairs rooms, we visited an extension at the rear of the house before heading upstairs. The extension includes a gallery that houses a number of paintings, including this portrait of Fannie Miller by an unknown artist. An informational placard provided a few details on the work:

Unknown Artist

Aunt Fannie, c. 1900

Oil over photograph on paper, 16 x 13-1/2 in.

Gift of Mrs. W. Foster Gillespie (1992.01.36)

Fannie Miller, donor Gertrude Miller Gillespie's ''Aunt Fannie'', was born during the Civil War, and 1880 census records list her as a young woman residing with her parents, grandparents Lucinda Davis and Ebenezer Templeton Miller (on view in this gallery), and four siblings in Jacksonville, Illinois. This elaborately framed, hand-tinted photograph is rendered in oil paint over a photographic base. The unknown artist's colorization of the image is an inventive and successful response to the increasing prevalence of photography as a form of portraiture.

The photograph itself can be seen at the part in the sitter's hair, around the edges of her head, where paint has been lost across her bodice, and in other individual locations. The relatively crisp hairline suggests that the artist followed the line of the photograph rather than improvise to produce more naturalistic hair. In contrast, the face is a study of light and shadow, pigmentation, and volume. As a result, the artist presents a convincing oil portrait in effect, that only with scrutiny can be seen to have a photograph at its base.

An adult dusky Pygmy Rattlesnake from St. Vincent Island, Florida. It would seem that the vast majority of animals from Franklin County are anerythristic (lack the red pigmentation). The animals on the various barrier islands are no exception. This impressive animal was almost bluish gray and lacked all vestiges of the red dorsal stripe and red arrow-head on the top of the head commonly found in animals just 30 miles to the north.

Female feeding in leaf litter at Eyeworth, New Forest, Hampshire. The white cheek is due to reflection of light from shiny feathers, not pigmentation.

srsly.

wow, is pigmentation ever fun! i look like a cancerous zebra child! i had one where my eyes looked lighter, almost cataract-like, but this one looks more purposeful and less like i got into a bar fight the night before. i like how dirty this looks.

our pre-easter event yesterday was intense. i was 2:2 in egg wars until my flatmate obliterated my poor, ovoid champion.

if you're not latvian, or of baltic descent, you most likely have no clue what i'm talking about. hope everyone ate as much as they could handle, and then some.

looking forward to the day off work tomorrow. europeans know how to celebrate :)

pores much?

+a little laura ingalls wilder in comments. sleeping on your face will put that innocent dishevelment right back into anyone's appearance!

There are many fascinating aspects of the Collared Aracari. Certainly that serated bill stands out. As does the overall coloration -- the yellow chest and belly, the black and red band across the belly, the black spot (barely visible here) on the chest, the rufous band across the nape of the neck, the bright red rump. I could go on. But this photograph shows (especiallly if you view it in full screen mode) another subtle but incredibly interesting aspect -- notice that the iris has black pigmentation that partially surrounds and disrupts the perfectly round appearance of the pupil. The amount and pattern of this black iris pigmentation varies from bird to bird, but every single Collared Aracari (and the closely related Fiery-billed Aracari) exhibits this characteristic. I've never seen anything that discusses this, and I wonder whether this helps the bird to see better (reduce glare?) or whether it helps the bird to look even more intimidating to others (by making its eyes look even bigger than they are). Either way, one of my all-time favorite birds.

It's too bad that vertical tree mars the background of this photograph. Maybe some day I'll try to Photoshop it out.

From Wikipedia:

Giant Hogweed (Heracleum mantegazzianum), or Giant Cow-parsley, is a member of the family Apiaceae, native to the Caucasus Region and Central Asia. It may reach 2-5 metres (rarely to 7 m) tall. Except for size, it closely resembles Common Hogweed (Heracleum sphondylium), Heracleum sosnowskyi or Garden Angelica (Angelica archangelica).

It is further distinguished by a stout, dark reddish-purple stem and spotted leaf stalks that are hollow and produce sturdy bristles. Stems vary from 3-8 cm in diameter, occasionally up to 10 cm. The stem shows a purplish-red pigmentation with raised nodules. Each purple spot on the stem surrounds a hair, and there are large, coarse white hairs at the base of the leaf stalk. The plant has deeply incised compound leaves which grow up to 1-1.7 m in width.

Giant Hogweed is a perennial with tuberous rootstalks which form perennating buds each year. It flowers from late spring to mid summer, with numerous white flowers clustered in an umbrella-shaped head that is up to 80 cm (2.5 ft) in diameter across its flat top. The plant produces flattened, 1 cm long, oval dry seeds that have a broadly rounded base, and broad marginal ridges. It flowers from late spring to mid summer, and then produces between 1,500 to 100,000 seeds. Shoots die down in the fall. Tall stems mark its locations during winter.

Smallin' Civil War Cave - Christian County, MO. March, 2012.

The only true troglobytic salamander found in the Ozarks, this interesting species goes through a rather dramatic change from larvae to adulthood. As larvae, they are readily found in springs and seeps outside of caves and they have fully functional eyes and some pigmentation. When these salamanders metamorph, they lose their pigmentation and skin grows over their eyes. They also are almost never found outside of caves as adults (except when floods force them out).

The very oldest markings are now impossible to identify as creatures. Their age is indicated by the colour of pigmentation - the lighter or yellower, the newer. In this one you can pick out an ostrich, maybe two. Most probably these were made by homo sapiens hunter gatherers.

In order to delay this location's inevitable destruction, I will tell you it's in Libya, but no more.
